Novel, Carl Lee Hailey, a black resident of Clanton, Mississippi, decided to take matters into his


own hands.


The novel starts with two white males, Billy Ray Cob, and Pete Willard, raping Tonya


Hailey, a ten-year old black girl. When they are done with her they leave her in a dry creek bed


to die. Luckily, the next morning some black fishermen find her laying in the middle of the road,


and they return her to her house.


Sheriff Ozzie Walls is sent to investigate. He has a hunch that it was Billy Ray Cobb


because of Tonya’s description of their truck. He finds Cobb and Willard drunk in a bar outside


of Clanton. Billy Ray is raving on about how he raped a little nigger girl when Ozzie finds him.


Cobb and Willard are placed under arrest.


Pete Willard is afraid of going to jail so he confesses to the police. The next day Willard


and Cobb are put on trial. As they are leaving the courthouse Carl Lee Hailey jumps out of the


janitor’s closet armed with an M-16 and blows away Cobb and Willard and accidentally hit


Deputy Looney in the leg. Then he runs out of the building and goes home.


Ozzie then questions some eye witnesses and gathers enough evidence to arrest Carl Lee.


Carl Lee then hires Jake Brigance as his lawyer. Jake accepts, knowing that he will never get


another case with as much publicity as this one. The next day Looney’s leg gets amputated.


A couple weeks later, Jake and Carl Lee go to court to select the grand jury. After the


jury is selected they have to vote whether or not to indict the criminal. The vote ends up 1-6


meaning if there was one more vote not to indict Carl Lee wouldn’t even have been indicted.


At the next meeting Carl Lee pleads not guilty and his trial is set for July . Bail is


denied. That night the Klu Klux Klan places a burning cross on Jake’s lawn.


The friend whom Carl Lee got the M-16 from persuaded Carl Lee to hire a new lawyer


that wouldn’t even charge anything. Carl Lee finally agrees and hires this lawyer. He doesn’t


have the guts to tell Jake himself so Jake has to read about it in the newspaper. Jake is outraged


and he calls Carl Lee’s brother, Lester, who was his old client. Lester persuades Carl Lee to


rehire Jake and Jake is back on the job.


Jake’s friend and old boss Lucien, had found Jake a psychiatrist that would say that Carl


Lee was drunk at the time of the murder. There was one slight problem though. Dr. W. T. Bass


was a heavy drinker.


In the meantime the NAACP was raising money through churches so they could send


their own lawyers in to defend Carl Lee Hailey. Jake had heard rumours about this and was


starting to get scared.


Jake’s change of Venue is denied because no matter where you go everyone has heard


about the case. He start’s to worry about the Hailey Case and only the Hailey Case. All his other


cases are being forgotten so he is running out of money.


The NAACP shows up at the police station to ask Carl Lee to be his attorney. Carl Lee


blatantly tells them to go home and leave him alone, he would rather have Jake.





The Klu Klux Klan was growing in Clanton as more, and more people joined. People


were coming from all over to scare the people representing Carl Lee. Luckily one of the guys in


the Klu Klux Klan that called himself Mickey Mouse tipped off the police about the Klan’s


operation’s. He saved Jake’s house from getting blown up.


Jake’s wife was getting scared because of all the people that were threatening Jake and


his family. Her and Jake’s little daughter flew to North Carolina to stay with their grandparents.


Ellen Roark, a law student in Memphis, came to Jake and asked him if she could be a


law clerk for him. Jake agreed and she got to work.


Jake held a meeting with Reverend Agee from the NAACP to discuss what happened to


the money that was raised for the Hailey Case. Carl Lee and his wife were outraged when they


found out that money was raised in their name yet none was given to them. When Reverend


Agee discovered that he had been found out he quickly gave the money to he Haileys.


A couple of days later a huge group of black people gathered outside of the courthouse


and held a huge church meeting and they sang, prayed, and chanted for Carl Lee. They knew that


a white person in Carl Lee’s place wouldn’t even be on trial.


The next day the Klan started a peaceful march to the courthouse. Once they got their


though, a huge riot started and many people were injured.


The National Guard was called in to protect the streets of Clanton.


The jury was picked. There was ten women and two men. All of them were white, Not a


very good jury for Jake. He was hoping for at least two blacks.


The Klan followed Ellen Roark home from Jake’s house and pretended they were cops.


They pulled her over, tied her up and brought her to the Klan gathering. They cut off her hair and


most of her clothes and hit her. Then they left her there to die. Luckily Mickey Mouse was


hiding in the bushes and he took her to the hospital.


After a three day trial Carl Lee was found not guilty of all charges, and got to go home to


his family.


I believe if I was on the jury , I also would find Carl Lee not guilty. I would be proud of


him to have guts to stick up for himself. The men he killed didn’t even deserve death. It was a


good book and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good book. It has also inspired me


to watch the movie.
