I waited anxiously for the clock to wind down to trigger the closing bell of the pistachio factory. I’ve been working at the factory for two months and today was the last day of my summer vacation job. The only thing that stood between the exit and me was the ringing of the closing bell to make it official. I was excited thinking about the opportunities that waited for me beyond those exit doors. I worked most of that summer, and only had a month to enjoy the rest of my summer vacation. I had turned sixteen, recently got my drivers license, and I was buying my first car that afternoon. I was willing to spend every penny that I had saved to be able to drive around on my own, instead of riding the bus, asking my parents for a ride or walking. Finally the clock struck four and the closing bell sounded off. The sound was music to my ears, like a slot machine going off after hitting a jackpot.
Immediately after I left the factory, I met with my father and we drove to the house where my future car was. My father came across the car while talking to our neighbor last week who said, “My cousin Miguel recently bought a new car and is selling a 184 Buick Skylark for a really good deal.” My father, being the thrifty guy that he is, could not pass up a good deal and replied, “If your cousin could give me a bargain, I would take my son to come see the car next week.” My neighbor made the arrangements with his cousin for us to meet next week for that afternoon. As we pulled up to the driveway there it was covered with a thick layer of dust and huge white letters on the windshield that spelled FOR SALE. The Buick was an off-white, maybe eggshell color, with minor damage to the passenger side door. Through my observation, I noticed that the car was still stock with its original interior and hubcaps. It also had good tires, no apparent oil leakages, and an odometer reading with only fourteen thousand miles, but who knows how many times it had been rolled over.
As my father and I were examining the car, he asked me, “Son, if you don’t like what you see we can always leave and find another car.” Astonished by his question, I turned and looked at him like he was crazy and said, “NO! I like this car.” His eyes widened showing all white like two cue balls. He was surprised. I’m sure he saw an old pile of junk in front of him, but I saw an opportunity to build a cherry painted custom low rider, which at the time was the cool thing to do. There were certain cars that low rider novice chose to transform into low riders and the Buick Skylark wasn‘t one of them. Many of my friends and dedicated low rider enthusiast preferred Buick Regals, Cadillac Coupe de Villes, or Oldsmobile Cutlass Supremes, nevertheless I wanted this car and no one was going to change my mind. Shortly there after, the Buick owner came out to greet us. He said his name was Miguel and he was ready to get down to business. My father and I began asking questions about the car and its mechanical state. We then asked Miguel if he could start the car up for us. Miguel jumped into the drivers seat put the key in the ignition and then turned it, but nothing happened. Miguel tried again, but still nothing. He then started pumping the gas and turning the key at the same time saying, “The car never did this to me before; maybe its because its been sitting out here for a while,” but as soon as he was done talking, a loud BOOM came out the muffler as if the tail pipe were a shotgun being fired.
Still not a bit discouraged, I pressed on to make a deal. We then negotiated briefly and came to an agreement of three hundred dollars which nearly drained my savings, but, before I could accept, my father asked me, “Are you sure this is what you want.” As if he were a fortuneteller warning me of a misfortune or just a father asking his child to think before he acts. Whatever it was, nothing was going to persuade me to change my mind, so, I confidently told him that this is the car that I wanted. I gave three hundred dollars to Miguel and, in return, he handed me the pink slip and keys. I jumped in the car, but this time I didn’t have any trouble starting it up. I thanked Miguel and told my father I would see him at home.
Write my paper for me!!!
Many emotions came over me as I pulled the car out of the driveway and drove the car for the first time. I felt joy and the feeling of accomplishment to own my very first car. As the emotions subsided, ideas started flooding my mind about turning this boring Buick into a showroom low rider. When I brought the car home that afternoon, I immediately went to work on it. Any spare time that I had was spent working or thinking about my car. I worked every weekend that month building my low rider. My garage smelled of primer and bondo compound that first weekend because I fixed most of the body damage. After that first weekend, the car looked liked a Dalmatian with all the primered areas representing spots. I spent the rest of the weekends that month lowering the car and installing an ear deafening stereo system. All I needed now was to save enough money to buy rims, re-do the upholstery, and get a custom paint job, but before I was able to put a penny away, my whole world came crashing down on me. The transmission in my car went out and it was going to cost me three times the amount I bought it for.
The site of the car left a sour taste in my mouth. It was unbearable to look at because, at that same moment, I came to the realization that I bought a lemon. Surely there after, I sold the car, but, throughout this ordeal, the one thing I can never forget is when I asked my father if he knew what I was getting myself into and he said, “Son, you are growing up and not all the decisions you make in life are always going to be the right ones, but, its what you learn from them, that’s important.” I thought about what he said and he was right. I made a bad choice and what I gained from it was that life is an ongoing learning process, full of choices, decisions, and lessons, much like in a classroom. In this particular case, the decision I made did not work out the way I wanted it to, however, it has taught me to have more patience and to look thoroughly before I invest my time or money into something, especially when it has to do with buying a car.
