These probable feelings are first apparent because of Elizabeth’s obsession with Mr. Darcy’s letter. “She could only think of her letter”, but in reality, perhaps, she could only think of Mr. Darcy and his feelings for her, unconsciously realizing her parallel feelings for him.


In another section of chapter thirteen, Elizabeth rants and raves about the situation she finds herself in “ repeatedly exclaiming, ‘This must be false! This cannot be! This must be the grossest falsehood’ ”(17). Elizabeth is denying the reality of the situation because she finds it so shocking to be true. This suggests that perhaps the present reality has been an unconscious want of Elizabeth’s, and by acting shocked she feels as though she is expressing that there was never any want or desire for Mr. Darcy to love her. However, her behavior only uncovers the fact that she is surprised that he, in fact, loves her back.


In reading this letter, Elizabeth not only thinks of Mr. Darcy, but of her false thoughts concerning Mr. Darcy and Mr. Wickham. Elizabeth realizes that “she had been blind, partial, prejudice, and absurd”(176), seeming to side with Mr. Wickham without any proof of his facts about Mr. Darcy; but merely his opinion. Perhaps she did not realize before her possible love for Mr. Darcy because she was blinded by Mr. Wickham’s strong opinion towards him. Having partial feelings for Mr. Wickham may have blinded Elizabeth from Mr. Darcy. Now knowing more about Mr. Wickham, Elizabeth is open to have stronger feelings for Mr. Darcy. It is also probable that because Mr. Darcy honestly describes his actions in trying to prevent Mr. Bingley from marrying Jane, that Elizabeth is more likely to trust him and his story of Mr. Wickham.
