February 7th, 00 at 70 p.m. I attended an opera. The name of the opera I attended was The Bartered Bride. This opera is from Czechoslovakia but it was performed in English. The performance was at Grand Valley State University’s Louis Armstrong Theatre. The opera music was supplied by the GVSU symphony orchestra. The person who directed this opera’s performance was Isabel Milenki.


At first it seemed weird for me to be at an opera. I’m usually not the type of person to attend such an event. After I got settled and read my program to see what this was going to be like the show started. The first thing I noticed was the stage was tilted on and angle toward the audience. I kept thinking that it must have been difficult for the performers to be on such and angle. Then seeing how it didn’t seem to be affecting the actors too much I sat back and began to enjoy the show.


The beginning of the opera had a long instrumental sequence. I was a little thrown off because there was no signing. There was and instrumental only because it was a dream sequence. It showed the premise the opera with the lead women part, Marenka, and how she was going to be force to marry against her will. My favorite thing about this opening sequence was a gigantic fake cake that was brought out on the stage. It looked funny being brought out.


After the dream sequence the singing began. I laughed a little when the performers were talking but signing at the same time, I had to get use to that. The rest of the opera was singing numbers. The first act set up was going on in the story. My favorite part of the first act was the marriage broker, Kecal, and his thugs put on a slide show for the parents of Marenka of the man that she was being forced to marry. The pictures of Vasek, the man to be Marenka’s husband, were really funny. It was the most memorable part of the first act for me. The rest of the first act went pretty well land I did enjoy it, which hooked me into being excited to see what was going to happen.

After an intermission the opera started again and in of all places the scene was in a bar. I have to admit the second act was my favorite. In this act were some of the best songs. I found out in the second act that the plot was thickening. Jenik the man who was in love with Marenka was being paid off by Kecal to find someone else. He accepts Kacals offer but there were some conditions. It seemed the Jenik was making a really bad mistake and at the end of act two the townspeople found out about what Jenik did to the women he love and got angry with him.


After a second intermission I was ready to see what was going to happen. It was strange but the scene change to a circus, like without no warning there is a circus. There were some funny songs in the third act. The ending was a surprise when Jenik tricked everyone and made in so he and Marenka got to be married and Kecal paid him. I like the part were Vasek was kind of seduce by a gypsy at the circus, who he fell in love with, to put on a bear suit and fill in the guy who was suppose to do it.


All throughout the play I enjoyed the music for the orchestra. They really did a great job. The music really fit in with the story. The music sounded tense and the tense parts, happy at the happy parts, funny and the funny parts and so on. I’m pretty sure the music was mainly homophonic. I wasn’t really paying attention to the meat and potatoes of the music. The performers took most of my attention. They sang part the seemed to be the same. Sometimes they would do like a round with one portion of a song. They made more of an impression over the music being played.


The whole opera was almost there hours long. It was amazing that everyone in the cast and the orchestra could perform for that long. This was my first opera and I really enjoyed it. I didn’t think I would even like it before I went. It was and enjoyable show though. I think this opera being a comedy and in English helped also. Even though it did seem a little bit long it was worth it. The cast was great and so was the music. My favorite cast member was Kecal, who was played by a huge guy in a purple suit with a gigantic fake cigar. The song I like the best was the first one in the second act about praising beer as the only consultation in life. It was funny and had a good beat and the dancing of the performers was great. Overall it was a great performance by all and very enjoyable.
