Booker, Washington T. Up From
Slavery. New York
Signet Classic, 000
The amazing story of Booker T. Washington’s life in Up From From Slavery written by Booker T. Washington is an amazing of how one black man rises in a time of oppression and hatred against his race. Despite these setbacks Washington continued to the top. Eventually he became a famous and highly educated man. Even with these many barriers blocking his way to his goals, he made his way to the top. He eventually becomes one of the most educated blacks in the U.S. At that time blacks had just been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation and were rarely educated and the majority of them were laborers if they even had an occupation. In all it was a horrible time for Washington to accomplish what he did.
Booker T. Washington was born on a Franklin County, Virginia plantation. His mother was a cook at the plantation. Washington’s father was a white man from a nearby farm. He went to school there only to carry books for his master’s daughter when she went to school for it was against the law to educate slaves. Washington’s father was a white man from a nearby farm. His early childhood was spent working on the plantation until the Emancipation Proclamation was passed.
After the Emancipation Proclamation, Washington moved to West Virginia. There he took up working at a coalmine as a financial advantage to his family, which was in a high state of poverty. Here, he attended school as much as he possibly could. He had such a strong desire to receive an education, that he would work all day and then attend night school at many times. After a few years Washington was taken in as a houseboy by a wealthy townswoman who further encouraged his desire to learn.
With this encouragement and his own desires in mind, he heard about the Hampton Institute from two of the workers in the coalmine and returned to Virginia in order to attend the school. To gain an education, Washington worked as a custodian at the school to pay for his education. Later, Washington became an instructor at the Hampton Institute.
In 1881 he left the Hampton Institute and founded the Tuskegee Institute at Alabama. This school was built by the hands of Washington, his small group of faculty members, and the students. Through numerous financial troubles and times of need, through extremely generous donations and much asking of money, they came through and built the institute fully and made it a total success. This institute, for normal and industrial education, was a rare opportunity for black men and women.
As a very outspoken critic of racism and a pioneer of black education, Washington became known as the nation’s foremost black educator. With these many accomplishments and all his hard work, in 186 he received an honorable Ph.D. from Harvard University, the oldest and most respected university in America, and became the first African-American to do so.
Through many hard times Washington continued to try and get an education. Through many hardships, he kept his hopes up and didn’t lose hope of accomplishing his goals. With these qualities he reached the top and became a pioneer for African-Americans. He helped his race more than anyone had in the past. His example was a seed for a new life for the blacks.
