In Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown,” the main character goes through a life-altering journey through the devil’s forest. Prior to this journey, Goodman Brown has a loving and trusting relationship with his wife and an optimistic out look on his life. However, by the end of his journey he is dramatically different. Through the journey, Goodman’s character changes from a trusting and vulnerable young man, to a distrustful and desperate aged man.


Before the journey begins, Goodman Brown is very trusting in his wife, church, and community. He trusts that his wife is a good faith filled woman who will be a guide for him throughout the rest of his years. One example of Goodman’s trust in his wife, Faith, is before he leaves for his journey he has doubts after Faith tells him she is “troubled with such dreams and such thoughts.” He believes that when he returns, to his wife, from his journey he will be able to “cling to her skirts and follow her to heaven.” This is evidence of his trust in Faith and their relationship. Goodman also has trust in his community and church before his journey. We are people of prayer, and good works to boot, and abide no such wickedness.” This quote illustrates that Brown trusts that he lives in a faithful and loyal community. Goodman Brown also believes that his church leaders are pure. “Oh, his voice would make me tremble both Sabbath day and lecture day.” He utters these words in defense of his minister to the devil.


Due to all of the trust he has in his wife, and church community he opens himself to being very vulnerable. Goodman shows his vulnerability when he tells the devil “My father never went into the woods on such an errand, nr his father before him.” He believes that his father and grandfather were good men, and that they would never walk with the devil. However, the devil then explains to him all of the times he walked with Goodman’s ancestors. Even after the devil gives Goodman explanations, Goodman still does not believe him. The devil continues to tell Goodman, “the deacons of many a church have drunk the communion wine with me” (8). Goodman’s vulnerability and trust prohibits him from seeing the evil that his fellow church community and ancestors possess. In these early stages of his journey, he still wants to believe that every one is good.





As the journey progresses Goodman gradually becomes distrustful and desperate. The first doubt Goodman has is when he sees his old catechism teacher, Goody Cloyse, in the forest. “he pointed his staff at a female figure on the path, in whom Goodman Brown recognized a very pious and exemplary dame, who had taught him his catechism in youth, and was still his moral and spiritual adviser…”(0). The fact that Goody is in the forest sends the first wave of doubt in Goodman’s mind about her. In the story, the forest symbolizes evil. If Goody were a truly spiritual person, she would have never been in the forest. Goodman loses all faith in Goody when she acknowledges knowing the devil. “Then Goody Colyse knows her old friend” (0)? In admitting to knowing the devil, Goody sends Goodman spiraling into confusion of his past beliefs, starting his change in character.


Goodman’s change in character is completed when he realizes that his wife Faith is also affiliated with the devil. Before Goodman loses all beliefs, he continues to hold onto Faith as his last hope. “With heaven above, and Faith below, I will yet stand firm against the devil” (). When Goodman hears Faith’s voice and finds her pink ribbon in the forest, he realizes “My Faith is gone” (). He tries once more to get Faith to “look up to heaven, and resist the wicked one” (5). Faith’s turn to evil is the demise of young Goodman Brown.


When Goodman returns to Salem village, he is distrustful. Goodman attendes church where “the congregation [was] singing a holy psalm, he could not listen because an anthem of sin rushed loudly upon his ear and drowned all the blessed stain” (6). He cannot listen because he has seen the minister and the congregation with the devil. He knows they are full of sin and lies, and he believes that there is no good to be found in any of the congregation. Goodman’s distrust in his church community caused him to become desperate.


He is desperate to find comfort. Goodman can not even find comfort in his own family prayers. “Often, awaking suddenly at midnight, he shrank form the bosom of Gait; and at morning or eventide, when the family knelt down at prayer, he scowled and muttered to himself, and gazed sternly at his wife, and turned away” (6). Goodman is desperate to find anything he can believe in, but finds nothing but evil and lies after his journey through the forest. Goodman’s “dying hour was gloom” (6), because there is never any trust or comfort in his life.


One journey through the forest changed Goodman Brown’s character for life. After his experiences with the devil, Goodman lost all faith in everything he believed in and trusted. Goodman started his journey as a trusting and vulnerable man, and through the betrayal of all that he trusted he became a desperate and distrustful man. Due to this change there was “no hopeful verse upon his tombstone” (6).
