Nebraska has given many things to the world, but nothing better than Arbor Day. The idea originally came from Nebraska. A visit to Nebraska today wouldn’t show that the state was once a treeless plain. It was simply the lack of trees that led to the founding of Arbor Day. The first Arbor Day was celebrated on April 10, 187. It was Julius Sterling Morton that introduced the wonderful idea of Arbor Day. He was a Nebraskan journalist and soon became editor of Nebraska’s first newspaper. Given that opportunity, Morton spread agricultural information all throughout his newspapers. Not only did he spread the agricultural information in his articles, he encouraged different organizations and groups to join in also. Morton and the many others that joined in felt that Nebraska’s landscape and economy would benefit from the wide-scale planting of trees. Morton first declared this tree-planting holiday at a meeting of the State Board of Agriculture on January 4, 187. The date of this important holiday was set on April 10, 187. Prizes were offered to countries and individuals for whoever planted the largest number of trees on that day. It was estimated that more than one million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day.


In the years following the first Arbor Day, Morton’s idea spread beyond Nebraska with Kansas, Tennessee, Minnesota, and Ohio all pronouncing their own Arbor Days. Today all fifty states celebrate Arbor Day. Arbor Day dates vary between the different places because of the different climates. Today the most common date for Arbor Day is the last Friday in April. In Alabama Arbor Day is celebrated on the last full week in February. In South Carolina Arbor Day is celebrated on the first Friday in December.
