Unlike traditional war stories, The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brian, has no heroes. O’Brien’s various recollections of the Vietnam War reflect somewhat cowardice and embarrassing behavior. This unusual viewpoint of a war without a hero seems to reveal an inside look on day-to-day life in the middle of a major war.


The reason that O’Brian chose to write a war story with no heroes is that he wanted people outside of the war to see the truth. He wanted people to see that war is not full of fearless leaders and brave soldiers. War has a life-changing and hellish atmosphere that most stories tend to avoid. He does not believe that there is anything heroic about wars based on his many war experiences. OBrien shows that there are no real heroes in the war by trying to convey that everyone in war is just a regular Joe, some people just act smarter under extreme circumstances. The novel is filled with personal stories exhibiting each soldier’s good and bad characteristics. For example, in any other story, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross would be the groups’ fearless leader. But the truth comes out, and Jimmy Cross is far from fearless and is not much of a leader. His personal letters distract him enough to get a man killed. Throughout the novel, the faults and shame are layered on each person. He seems to prove that war can bring out the worst in everyone. The war brought the worst out of Mary Anne. The innocent blonde beauty was eventually filled to her eyeballs with the war and transformed into a dangerous fighter ready for the kill. “You come over clean and you get dirty and then afterward it’s never the same.” (pg. 114). Each person was affected by the war in some way. The war was what kept the soldiers from becoming heroes.


A hero in O’Brian’s point of view is someone of strong influence in the real world, as opposed being a hero of war, where people are taken by the extreme horror and despair. As far as O’Brian’s stories show, there is no such thing as a hero in a place of war. Throughout the novel, he refers back to his life outside the war. These stories involve real heroes back home, away from the fighting. At the end of the book, he tells a story about a young girl that he loved back in fourth grade. Her name was Linda and she had to wear a cap everyday because she was partly bald from sickness. She was teased everyday by classmates and a boy even took off her cap one day in front of the entire class. The way that O’Brian told the story, he made her seem like a hero in his life. Even people like his daughter had fairly heroic qualities.
