In the developed world the right of free speech should be imperative, however, it is a myth. The Macquarie dictionary defines free speech as follows ‘the right to voice ones opinions in public‘. Also, worldwide organisations like the United Nations in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (article, 1), acknowledged, that everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers. (Newman 11 17) In support to this, I will examine the extent to which the developed countries - through political devices - are restricting the notion of free speech. The circumstances under which free speech is restricted in the developed countries, will also be examined. The objective of this essay is to examine the recent problem that the world is facing - terrorism and its war - and the restriction of the free flow of information in that matter, and consequently of free speech and opinions amongst the media as well as the people of the ’free’ world.

Historically, the most lasting argument for free speech came from the English philosophers John Stuart Mill and John Locke. Mill argued that open discussion was required for the discovery of truth. John Locke’s arguments in favour of freedom of thought and religious toleration have been co-opted in support of civil rights generally, as have the seventeenth-century political tracts of Benedict Spinoza. The scope of freedom advocated by Spinoza was ’That in a free state everyone may think what he pleases, and say what he thinks’. (Newman 1 17) However, the people of the past and their words of wisdom are not touching in anyway the leaders of the present, to implement an acceptable policy of freedom of speech.

Without any doubt, the notion of freedom of speech - in the developed countries - has been the beneficial tool for the progress of rational ideas, and consequently of actions, to pursue the global spirit of happiness and freedom. In many cases, however, the restriction of free speech has been applied - especially in political issues - where people have to base their own opinions on lies and disinformation.

Since the tragic event in America, on September-11-001, the United States government have imposed tough restrictions on the release of information to the media.

Write my paper for me!!!

This restriction creates disturbance and chaos amongst the people of the developed world for a number of reasons. First, disinformation causes ignorance amongst the people of the ’free’ world. Second, the entrapment of an unwanted war, and lack of knowledge, creates hostile resentments against innocent people. Third, it generates an impossible task for the free citizens of the ‘free’ world to express their own opinions in accordance to the matter - of terrorism and its war. Those, are some of the characteristics of the terrible consequences for the restrictions of free speech.

In addition to this, the international propaganda ( of silence) launched by the western alliance in conformity with the restriction of information, have influenced the viewpoint of the citizens of the developed world , in what way? The CNN international correspondents, Walter Isaacson, has said ‘We are entering a period in which there is a lot more reporting and video from Taliban controlled Afghanistan. You want to make sure people understand that when they see civilians suffering there, it is in the context of a terrorist attack that caused enormous suffering in the United States’. (The Washington Post 1 1-11-001) This is the hypocrisy of the international propaganda - led by the United States, which plays the major role in - these circumstances - of restricting the free flow of information. As well as the restriction of the interpretations of reality; which takes the citizens of the developed world into the fictional image of it. As a result, it creates the conditions for the people of the ’free’ world to distort the ‘truth’ or even worse, this situation gives the people of the ’free’ world only one choice, that is - silence. .

Furthermore, according to the Australian newspaper a respected Washington Post columnist Howard Kurtz quoted an unnamed military officer as saying the Bush administration would lie in pursuit of its military aims. This tactic was also used during the Gulf War (11), when misinformation was fed to the media (Jackson 1 11- 10-001) and as a result, to the citizens of the free world - where the restriction of free speech, in this case, has been imposed for political issue.

Also, during the Gulf War, waged largely by the US-led coalition in January 11, the public’s right to know was severely curtailed by strict censorship of operational details during the conflict. Commentators later suggested that the truth was the casualty in the official war propaganda released by both sides of the conflict. (Newman 4 17)

Therefore, the people of the developed world were overwhelmed by the political lies perpetuated by the politicians and their counterparts, with the major impact on the complicated and frustrating struggle to understand the issue. In this case the restriction of free speech as well as those of information have been once more at the expense of the people of the developed world.

The recent case - of the boxer Anthony Mundine - has been once again touching the concern of freedom of speech. Mundine was accused by the politicians, part of the media, and his promoters as one of the supporters of the terrorist attack in the United States. By those people; his comments were inexcusable; his words were against the war on terrorism fought by the western alliance; his observations - according to the people above him - were about to destroy his reputation and career. The ‘idol’ of many young Australians was about to be shut down.

Quite clearly, the restriction of freedom of speech, in this case, has been brought upon on one of the sport leading figure in Australia. The analysis of the comments in context of the boxer Anthony Mundine will conclude that without any uncertainty the restriction of free speech, is the case.

Further to this, Anthony Mundine was interviewed on Channel nine’s Today show on October nd 001, when he was asked what he thought about the war against Afghanistan. After explaining that he opposed the participation of Australian troops, Mundine said “It’s not about terrorism, it’s about fighting for God’s laws, and America has brought it upon themselves [for] what they’ve done in the history of time.” (Burke -10-001 ) The interview was suddenly cutthe network blamed technical difficultiesand all hell broke lose in newsrooms across the country.

Indeed, Mundine’s remarks were somewhat unclear. If the comments did reflect any sympathy on his part for terrorism then clearly they were misdirected. But that was not why he was attacked by the media - clearly, it was the concern to prevent any articulation of opposition to the war - and to such an extent that the restriction of freedom of speech was applied in that occasion by the media. Significantly, in light of the media reaction, Channel Nine later revealed that the public response to Mundine’s comments was far from being all negative. The network’s switchboard had been swamped by phone calls, half of them from viewers accusing station management of censoring the sports star because he had opposed the war. ( Phillips -10-001)

Moreover, in an article entitled “Punch drunk on perversity,” the Daily Telegraph’s columnist Piers Akerman warned Mundine that if wanted to “retain his right” to comment from “the safety and security of our democracy” then “he should support the US.” Akerman seemed oblivious to the obvious question what sort of “democracy” is it when only those who support the US-led war and the powers-that-be have the right to free speech? (Phillips -10-001 ) Indeed, the message is clear any criticism of the war, no matter how timid or confused, has to be silenced.

In conclusion, the hypocrisy of the restriction of free speech applied in the developed world, enhances the inconsistency of the notion of democracy. Many people had to succumb these concepts, in particular, those who wants to say something about it - in regard to the political issue. The case has been revolved around the matter of terrorism and its war. There are some people, who wants to express their own opinion in public for that matter - but they can not. There are some people, who likes to know the truth - but they can not. Also, the misinterpretation used by the media to frame Mundine and his personal opinions, the conclusion on the matter of free speech can be only one. The hypocrisy of the political world and - as George Kimball from The Boston Herald said ’The entire process smacks of McCarthyism at its worst’. (Warren 7 6-10-001) Clearly, the right of free speech is a myth.
