‘Compare the way poets have written about love and loss, bringing out different aspects of the theme’

Throughout the ages of Pre 114, different and same poets have written a variety of prominent poems. ‘Porphyria’s Lover’ and ‘My Last Duchess’ have both been written by the same poet, ‘Robert Browning.’ These two poems represent the same theme, ‘Love and Loss’ but in different aspects. However, they are both demonstrating abnormal love, as both female lovers are killed in the hands of their lovers. Altogether, I have carefully analysed five different poems, including ‘Porphyria’s Lover,’ ‘My Last Duchess’ but also, ‘Cousin Kate,’ ‘To His Coy Mistress’ and finally, ‘First Love.’ ‘Cousin Kate’ by ‘Christina Rossetti’ is more of a betrayed love, which leaves an innocent and hard working ‘cottage maiden’ miserable forever when she could of been something better and special like a ‘dove,’ if she had not fallen in love with an uncaring and betrayer ‘Lord,’ who had used her,

‘He wore me like a silken knot,

He changed me like a glove.’ ‘To His Coy Mistress’ by ‘Andrew Marvell’ is a poem about a male trying to force his lover into having sex by charming her as it says,

Write my paper for me!!!

‘Our sweetness, up into one ball.’ He is also concerned they have not got enough time to sit and wait as it reads,

‘Had we but world enough, and time.’ All of these poems that I have considered, are all dramatic monologues, which is a technique used, to allow the speaker in the poem to get their thoughts and feelings across, which gives the privilege for the reader to access knowing the feelings and thoughts of the speaker. I have selected two poems to discuss and compare about the ways poets have written about ‘Love and Loss,’ in the poems called ‘Porphyria’s Lover’ by ‘Robert Browning’ and ‘First Love’ by ‘John Clare.’

In ‘Porphyria’s Lover,’ here the lover describes how he waited lonely for ‘Porphyria’ to visit him. ‘Porphyria’ came in, having left a ‘gay feast’ to be with him, tended his fire and sat next to him with sweet affection,

‘She put my arm about her waist,

And made her smooth white shoulder bare.’ As they sat together by the fire, the lover was overwhelmed with pride and pleasure as ‘Porphyria’ ‘worshipped’ him and ‘mumuring how she loved’ him. He wanted the moment to never to end,

‘Made my heart swell, and still it grew’ and

‘That moment she was mine, mine, fair.’ In sudden silent madness, he decided to kill ‘Porphyria’ and thus to keep her his forever,

‘Three times her little throat around.’ He strangled her with her own ‘long’ and ‘yellow’ ‘hair,’ assuring that she wanted to die at that moment and that he did not really hurt her,

‘And strangled her. No pain felt she;

I am quite sure she felt no pain.’ As the poem ends, the reader amazingly realises with a stunning shock, that the lover is still sitting there with the head of dead ‘Porphyria’ propped on his shoulder,

I propped her head up as before,’ waiting to see what’God’ will do to him now…

‘And yet God has not said a word !’

‘First Love’ by ‘John Clare’ is purely ideal love, which introduces an inexperienced male falling in love suddenly and dramatically for the first time and that is why the poem is named, ‘First Love.’ The comparison in the poems is that in ‘Porphyria’s Lover’ the theme is based equally on ‘Love and Loss,’ where in ‘First Love’ the theme is entirely concentrated on ‘Love’ because the reason being is that in ‘Porphyria’s Lover’, the female gets murdered where in ‘First Love’ no one gets killed.

In ‘Porphyria’s Lover,’ the first image that ‘Browning creates is that the world outside is evil and unpleasant as ‘Browning’ uses personification to describe this as it refers to,

‘The rain set early in tonight,

The sullen wind was soon awake,

It tore the elm-tops down for spite,

And did its worst to vex the lake.’ All this description shaped by the usage of personification produces the image that the world outside is malevolence and unpleasant. Also, this quotation of the description of the outside world reflects the feelings of ‘Porphyria’s lover’ and it demonstrates the image that he is feeling angry, as the following personification says,

‘It tore the elm-tops down for spite,’ which suggest that he is angry because it is implying that nasty things are happening in the outside world and the weather conditions such as the wind is feeling ‘sullen’ and that is why they are breaking things such as ‘elm-tops’ down for ‘spite.’ He is feeling annoyed as well, as the next personification says,

‘And did its worst to vex the lake’ and ‘vex’ means annoyed. Furthermore, it also represents the image that he has got tears coming out of his eyes as the personification that reads,

‘The rain set early in tonight,’ recommends that he is crying because it is raining ‘early’ outside, which creates the mood of miserable and sadness. This entire image created, of the feelings of ‘Porphyria’s lover’ is because that he is not with ‘Porphyria’ at the moment and that he cannot bare to live without her plus he is probably thinking that nature is purposefully having a storm so ‘Porphyria’ cannot get to him and this creates the image of how much he is in love with her and if he is not with her, he feels angry, annoyed and sad and this links to the theme, ‘Love.’ We also get the image demonstrated to us that ‘Porphyria’ and her lover are affectionate and passionate towards each other, by the atmosphere in the poem, as ‘Robert Browning’ develops the image that when ‘Porphyria’ is not present with her lover, the atmosphere in the poem is all miserable and evil as it reads,

‘The rain set early in tonight,

The sullen wind was soon awake…’ and this reflects the image of how ‘Porphyria’s lover’ is feeling but when ‘Porphyria’ came to her lover’s presence, the atmosphere immediately modulates to warmth,

‘Blaze up, and all the cottage warm;’ and so this creates the image that ‘Porphyria’s lover’ is feeling happy and pleased as he,

‘…listened with heart fit to break.’ Basically, this image portrays how the atmospheric weather interconnects with their love. When ‘Porphyria’ is not with her lover, the image developed is unpleasant weather and unsettled feelings of ‘Porphyria’s lover’ as it asserts,

‘It tore the elm-tops down for spite,

And did its worst to vex the lake.’ Nevertheless, when ‘Porphyria is with her lover, the image built is pleasant conditions and feelings of ‘Porphyria’s lover,’ as it comments on,

‘I listened with heart fit to break,’

‘Blaze up, and all the cottage warm;’ Moreover, when ‘Browning’ directs the word ‘warmth’ in the poem, it constructs the image of ‘Love,’ as ‘warmth’ symbolizes the full, rich and deep colour of red and passionate love. ‘Robert Browning’ creates a
