These days with my friends and family I’ve been talking, laughing and thinking about
the future, out community and movies.
Lately with friends and family I’ve been thinking about my future. With friends I’m
sure we’ve all been thinking about our Standard Aptitude Test or better known as

SAT’s, graduation which seems not too far away and the best colleges in Texas and
beyond where we would love to go. With family, I’ve been wondering what will happen
to our tight knit “cluster” after I leave for college since we are so close to one another.
These days it all seems that the way we used to be will change forever.
Jay Leno once said that “ talking is the safest way to release your anger”. I think
after September , our community was hit the hardest since we are Muslim based faith.
My friends and I have been talking about how many people are beginning to trust our

that September 11 affected use just as much as the next person.
There are many ways to get away from the content worries of everyday life, I
think that watching movies is a good way to take a break from life. I know when my
friends and I get together to go watch a movie we try to pick a movie that makes very
little sense so, we can make fun of the movie or mimic parts of the movie. Those are
the moments people can look back on and smile about just spending time with friends
and laugh about it.

The Condemnation of Socrates
The philosopher Socrates was charged with the crimes of corrupting the youth and being impious. These charges are unjust for several reasons, and they are certainly not a just cause to execute someone. Socrates never actually broke the law, Socrates himself sees no reason for the trial, and almost half of the jury cannot say he is guilty of any crimes.
The condemnation is unjust in that Socrates never really broke the law. He went against the norm, and there were those who did not like what he was teaching. There were also those who very much liked what he was teaching such as Plato and others he taught. It also seems strange he was charged with being impious because the Greeks seemed to not really stress worship of the gods.
Socrates also sees the allegations as unjust, and while the defendant’s view on the matter rarely matters, it does in this case. Socrates is shown to be a good, just, and law abiding man when his good friend Crito told him he should fight for his life, but Socrates said that he would abide by the decision of the court. Crito would have helped Socrates escape if he wanted to. It would fly in the face of his teachings if he escaped.
Write my paper for me!!!
The jury was split on the matter as well. Just over half wanted to execute Socrates so it was very close. If that many people doubted Socrates was guilty of anything, there must be some injustice.
For these reasons the condemnation of Socrates was unjust. He was a wise man and a respected teacher. He was put to death basically because a lot of people did not like him or what he was teaching.

‘Compare the way poets have written about love and loss, bringing out different aspects of the theme’
Throughout the ages of Pre 114, different and same poets have written a variety of prominent poems. ‘Porphyria’s Lover’ and ‘My Last Duchess’ have both been written by the same poet, ‘Robert Browning.’ These two poems represent the same theme, ‘Love and Loss’ but in different aspects. However, they are both demonstrating abnormal love, as both female lovers are killed in the hands of their lovers. Altogether, I have carefully analysed five different poems, including ‘Porphyria’s Lover,’ ‘My Last Duchess’ but also, ‘Cousin Kate,’ ‘To His Coy Mistress’ and finally, ‘First Love.’ ‘Cousin Kate’ by ‘Christina Rossetti’ is more of a betrayed love, which leaves an innocent and hard working ‘cottage maiden’ miserable forever when she could of been something better and special like a ‘dove,’ if she had not fallen in love with an uncaring and betrayer ‘Lord,’ who had used her,
‘He wore me like a silken knot,
He changed me like a glove.’ ‘To His Coy Mistress’ by ‘Andrew Marvell’ is a poem about a male trying to force his lover into having sex by charming her as it says,
Write my paper for me!!!
‘Our sweetness, up into one ball.’ He is also concerned they have not got enough time to sit and wait as it reads,
‘Had we but world enough, and time.’ All of these poems that I have considered, are all dramatic monologues, which is a technique used, to allow the speaker in the poem to get their thoughts and feelings across, which gives the privilege for the reader to access knowing the feelings and thoughts of the speaker. I have selected two poems to discuss and compare about the ways poets have written about ‘Love and Loss,’ in the poems called ‘Porphyria’s Lover’ by ‘Robert Browning’ and ‘First Love’ by ‘John Clare.’
In ‘Porphyria’s Lover,’ here the lover describes how he waited lonely for ‘Porphyria’ to visit him. ‘Porphyria’ came in, having left a ‘gay feast’ to be with him, tended his fire and sat next to him with sweet affection,
‘She put my arm about her waist,
And made her smooth white shoulder bare.’ As they sat together by the fire, the lover was overwhelmed with pride and pleasure as ‘Porphyria’ ‘worshipped’ him and ‘mumuring how she loved’ him. He wanted the moment to never to end,
‘Made my heart swell, and still it grew’ and
‘That moment she was mine, mine, fair.’ In sudden silent madness, he decided to kill ‘Porphyria’ and thus to keep her his forever,
‘Three times her little throat around.’ He strangled her with her own ‘long’ and ‘yellow’ ‘hair,’ assuring that she wanted to die at that moment and that he did not really hurt her,
‘And strangled her. No pain felt she;
I am quite sure she felt no pain.’ As the poem ends, the reader amazingly realises with a stunning shock, that the lover is still sitting there with the head of dead ‘Porphyria’ propped on his shoulder,
I propped her head up as before,’ waiting to see what’God’ will do to him now…
‘And yet God has not said a word !’
‘First Love’ by ‘John Clare’ is purely ideal love, which introduces an inexperienced male falling in love suddenly and dramatically for the first time and that is why the poem is named, ‘First Love.’ The comparison in the poems is that in ‘Porphyria’s Lover’ the theme is based equally on ‘Love and Loss,’ where in ‘First Love’ the theme is entirely concentrated on ‘Love’ because the reason being is that in ‘Porphyria’s Lover’, the female gets murdered where in ‘First Love’ no one gets killed.
In ‘Porphyria’s Lover,’ the first image that ‘Browning creates is that the world outside is evil and unpleasant as ‘Browning’ uses personification to describe this as it refers to,
‘The rain set early in tonight,
The sullen wind was soon awake,
It tore the elm-tops down for spite,
And did its worst to vex the lake.’ All this description shaped by the usage of personification produces the image that the world outside is malevolence and unpleasant. Also, this quotation of the description of the outside world reflects the feelings of ‘Porphyria’s lover’ and it demonstrates the image that he is feeling angry, as the following personification says,
‘It tore the elm-tops down for spite,’ which suggest that he is angry because it is implying that nasty things are happening in the outside world and the weather conditions such as the wind is feeling ‘sullen’ and that is why they are breaking things such as ‘elm-tops’ down for ‘spite.’ He is feeling annoyed as well, as the next personification says,
‘And did its worst to vex the lake’ and ‘vex’ means annoyed. Furthermore, it also represents the image that he has got tears coming out of his eyes as the personification that reads,
‘The rain set early in tonight,’ recommends that he is crying because it is raining ‘early’ outside, which creates the mood of miserable and sadness. This entire image created, of the feelings of ‘Porphyria’s lover’ is because that he is not with ‘Porphyria’ at the moment and that he cannot bare to live without her plus he is probably thinking that nature is purposefully having a storm so ‘Porphyria’ cannot get to him and this creates the image of how much he is in love with her and if he is not with her, he feels angry, annoyed and sad and this links to the theme, ‘Love.’ We also get the image demonstrated to us that ‘Porphyria’ and her lover are affectionate and passionate towards each other, by the atmosphere in the poem, as ‘Robert Browning’ develops the image that when ‘Porphyria’ is not present with her lover, the atmosphere in the poem is all miserable and evil as it reads,
‘The rain set early in tonight,
The sullen wind was soon awake…’ and this reflects the image of how ‘Porphyria’s lover’ is feeling but when ‘Porphyria’ came to her lover’s presence, the atmosphere immediately modulates to warmth,
‘Blaze up, and all the cottage warm;’ and so this creates the image that ‘Porphyria’s lover’ is feeling happy and pleased as he,
‘…listened with heart fit to break.’ Basically, this image portrays how the atmospheric weather interconnects with their love. When ‘Porphyria’ is not with her lover, the image developed is unpleasant weather and unsettled feelings of ‘Porphyria’s lover’ as it asserts,
‘It tore the elm-tops down for spite,
And did its worst to vex the lake.’ Nevertheless, when ‘Porphyria is with her lover, the image built is pleasant conditions and feelings of ‘Porphyria’s lover,’ as it comments on,
‘I listened with heart fit to break,’
‘Blaze up, and all the cottage warm;’ Moreover, when ‘Browning’ directs the word ‘warmth’ in the poem, it constructs the image of ‘Love,’ as ‘warmth’ symbolizes the full, rich and deep colour of red and passionate love. ‘Robert Browning’ creates a

“If my house were on fire”
If my house were on fire, and all my family and pets were safely out of the house, and I had only enough time to take three items with me, what would they be? The fear of my house burning down has made me try to be prepared for such a disaster. This is something I have thought a lot about, and that is why I have organized in boxes the things that are most dear to me. The most important things to me would be my pomintoes box, my children’s keepsake box, and my important papers box.
My pomintoes box is filled with my family’s mementoes such as cards, pictures, and artwork that my children and I have made. There are also some photographs for which I do not have copies. I try to make copies of all my photographs and give them to many other family members, so I always have a copy. Once a year, we go through this box and add and sometimes remove items. This way we keep what is most important to us without over filling the box. I call this my pomintoes box because, when I was a little girl, I could not say mementoes; it always came out pomintoes. Over the years, this name has just stuck with me. These things cannot be replaced, for they hold my family’s most precious memories.
My childrens’ keepsake box is filled with each child’s outfit that they wore home from the hospital, their favorite baby toys, baby books, and their first pair of shoes; there is even a chewed up pacifier. There are many other things included. For example, each child has a small tin (which contains teeth that were left for the tooth fairy) favorite Easter eggs, and mud pies. I hope to give my children these things when they grow up and have families of their own like my mother did for me.
Do my coursework
My important papers box contains things such as birth certificates, shot records, school records, marriage certificate, life and medical insurance policies, home and auto insurance policies, property deeds, and auto titles. I also keep a copy of my taxes and my financial records in this box. I have all of these papers in sealed bags in case of water damage. While most of these things are replaceable, having them together will make
things much easier in case of a disaster such as a fire.
I keep these boxes in the coat closet in the hall by the front door. I keep them there in hopes that it would be easily accessible in case of emergency, whether it be a fire or some other disaster. I have heard many stories of people who say they lost every thing they owned in a fire, and if only they had been more prepared, maybe they could have saved some of their most precious possessions. While I hope never to experience such a loss, I want to be as prepared as possible.

The Causes of the Civil War
After reading the causes of the Civil War I learned that slavery was not the only cause of the war and maybe not the major cause of the war. For example there were fundamental differences in assumptions, tastes, and cultural aim that made it virtually impossible for the two for the two societies to live together in peace. Northerners opposed slavery because they feared it might it might spread into their own region and threaten the position of free white laborers, which they didn’t want it to expand into the West. Many may say that the economic causes were the most significant of the war. The disparity between northern and southern economies was exacerbated. Before and after the depression the economy of the South prospered. Southern cotton sold abroad totaled 57% of all American exports before the war. The panic of 1857 devastated the North and left the South virtually untouched. The clash of a wealthy, agricultural South and a poorer, industrial North was intensified by abolitionists who were not above using class struggle to further their cause.
Some say simplistically that the Civil War was fought over slavery. Unfortunately, there is no simple reason. The causes of the war were a complex series of events, including slavery, which began long before the first shot was fired. Competing nationalisms, political turmoil, the definition of freedom, the preservation of the Union, the fate of slavery and the structure of our society and economy could all be listed as significant contributing in the causes of the war. I believe the most significant cause to the civil war is slavery. South economy was based on the black slaves, which provided cheap manual labor for the cotton culture. However, in the North, people mostly disapproved to the slavery particularly active protesting religion that considered a crime against the Law of God, which have been created the equal men. In spite of the slavery states have maintained a balance of being able, thanks to the secession of president who had acted openly in their favor. In 1860, when Abraham Lincoln won the presidential election, which known by its anti-slavery opinions, the slavery states announced they are separated from the union before being under a president “friend of the blacks.” That started the war.
Even though there are over a million reasons that started the Civil war, the most significant one is slavery. There is no other cause that would make this war break out like it did than the act of slavery.

Women in Music Videos
“Sweat until my clothes come off,” “It’s getting’ hot in here, so take off all your clothes,” and “Baby don’t you wanna dance up on me,” are all lyrics from popular songs in today’s pop culture. These are just a few of the very many risqu lyrics to today’s most popular songs amongst teenagers. Not only are the lyrics very suggestive, but also some of the videos for these songs are downright raunchy. Popular music videos portray women in a very negative way. Music videos fling messages to young women that say that it is “cool” to dress provocatively and be promiscuous. Women are rarely ever showed in a decent and good-natured manner in today’s music videos, not to mention fully clothed. One video in particular would have to be Christina Aguilera’s video for her song “Dirrty,” the video itself could almost be considered a soft-core pornographic video. And then there is the second pop princess, Britney Spears, “all grown up” in her video for “I’m a Slave for You,” where Britney bears all. In addition to the pop stars of today, the rappers in the media also display women as just merely objects. One that sticks out in particular is Nelly’s video for “Hot in Herre.”
Scenes in Christina Aguileras Dirrty video contain images that are suggestive, sexy and downright lewd. Christina Aguilera’s music video for the song “Dirrty” sends a message to adolescent girls that it’s okay for women to be provocative. In the video, Christina appears sporting chaps over underpants, exposing her derriere, a popular look in the sadomasochist community, while she is singing about “getting off” with lyrics such as, “Wanna get rowdy/Gonna get a little unruly/Get it fired up in a hurry/Wanna get dirty.” (Aguilera). Christina is not only dressed provocatively, but she also dances in a very crude manner. She is not only dancing erotically with guys, but also with girls. On MTV (Music Television) it was reported that, “Two posters seen in the video feature Thai script that translates to read Thailands Sex Tourism and Young Underage Girls references to Thailands much-criticized, tourist-driven sex industry.” (Joe D’Angelo). The signs can be seen while Christina, whom calls herself “Xtina,” is boxing with another girl in the video. The video contains many women, including Christina, acting out an assortment of freakish male fantasies.
Christina Aguilera isn’t the only pop princess who’s all grown up, Britney Spears is also making her fair share of crude music videos. She started off with “…Baby One More Time,” where she was wearing the “private school girl gone bad” uniform, while telling her male audience to “hit me baby one more time.” But compared to her latest risky video “I’m a Slave for You,” “…Baby One More Time” looks almost angelic. But we have yet to see Britney fully clothed. Once again, in this video Britney has the bare midriff, and the tight jeans. This time though, she adds a fake tan, undergarments on the outside of her pants, and a dozen boys “dancing up on her.” At one point in the video, there are men all around her, groping her, and one of them manages to lick her, and Britney seems to be enjoying all this sick and twisted behavior. Throughout the song, Britney can be heard panting, and breathing very hard, almost implying sexual intercourse and/or having an orgasm. Besides her slutty clothes, crude lyrics, and risqu dancing, the song itself talks about a concept of slavery, which was abolished many years ago. “Im a slave for you/I cannot hold it/ I cannot control it/ Im a slave for you/I wont deny it/Im not trying to hide it.” Is it all right for young girls to allow themselves to be controlled by their male counterparts as if they were slaves? And the rest of the song seems to reveal the rest of the diabolic plan for girls to be scandalous, immoral, sex freaks. Is this what we as women, are supposed to strive to be?

Pop stars aren’t the only people in the music industry that have portrayed women negatively. Women in rap videos have been depicted very disapprovingly for many years. One rap video in particular shows women as simply sex objects. The video is “Hot in Herre,” by the rap artist Nelly. The music video is chock full of scantily clad women, grinding with other men on the dance floor. The song encourages women to get naked, “Its getting hot in here/So take off all your clothes,” with a female singer responding with “I am getting so hot/I wanna take my clothes off.” At this point in the video, women begin taking their clothes off. The song just says to take your clothes off, but you notice that only women take their clothes off, and women are the only ones encouraged to take off their clothes.

In the years between 10 and 154 the United States grew into one of the most productive lands on Earth. During the 10’s the country turned away from world affairs and found excitement at home, but the excitement did not last very long. It suddenly ended in the early 10’s. A Great Depression crushed the economy and millions of people lost their job.
The Great Depression main start occurred on Tuesday, October , 1. Today it is known as Black Tuesday. During that time at least 0 million dollars were lost (Nishi 1). It was the worst day in history for the stock markets. ‘’By June 10, the price of securities on Wall Street was about 0 percent, on
Average, of what it had been prior to the crash; between 1 and 1 the Dow-Jones average of industrial stock prices fell from a high of 81 to a low of 41” (Depression 1). The Depression should have been expected due to the “flaws in banking practice” (Wecter ).

The United States were not the only one affected by the Great Depression. The USSR, who did not trade with other nations, was the primary exception. Europe, although, was effected. It’s economy and agricultural sectors were greatly depressed (Thorkelson 44). It took Europe many years to fully regain all the economic levels it sustained before World War I (Thorkelson 44).
Unemployment spread rapidly, and commercial farmers produced more products than that which could have made a reasonable profit (Thorkelson 44). Agricultural prices dropped by 5 percent between 1 and 1 (Thorkelson 45). Many factories closed and left people without a way of providing for their family. During this time many people were forced to live in Shantytowns, called Hoovervilles. Feeling the pinch of the Depression, people found they could eat less, wear less, and spend less generally than they had thought possible in the boom years. “In that 4’year span unemployment rose from 1.5 million to about 15 million” (Thorkelson 44).
President Hoover had most of the blame put to him for the cause of the depression. Hoover tried to respond to the depression through asking top labor leaders and businessmen to Washington (Nishi 1). He earned a lot of negative criticism after his attempts to end the depression failed from many people (Nishi 16). After three years Herbert Hoover lost his position as president to Franklin Delano Roosevelt on March 4, 1, the nd president of the United States (Nishi 0).
Roosevelt’s program for the New Deal gave him overwhelming faith and support from America. He promised to bring the American people out of the Great Depression (Nishi 0). They virtually gave him dictatorial powers. People felt as if toward the end of the year that country was coming out of the harsh times.
The New Deal began as Congress passed an amazing number of programs during Roosevelt’s first hundred days in office, including the Emergency Banking Relief Act, the Agricultural Adjustment Act, the Tennessee Valley Act, and the National Industrial Recovery Act. Later legislation includes the Social Security Act and the Fair Labor Standards Act (Nishi 4-8). The New Deal used the poverty of the people as a “springboard” to socialism (Wecter 8).
He temporarily closed the banks declaring a ‘’bank holiday” to determine which are sound enough to handle depositors’ money (Wecter 65). The banking system was on the verge of complete failure (Nishi 0). President Roosevelt did not allow the exportation of gold or anything involved in foreign exchange. The banks were individually reopened (Wecter 65).
Once World War II broke out in 1 focus of the U.S. government was switched toward that of foreign affairs. Once the U.S. entered the war the number of unemployed citizens dropped as the armed forces and war industry expanded. Many problems still remained in that of poverty and insecurity. Welfare and social security expanded to help ease these problems (Thorkelson 46). Poverty continued after WWII, but the gap between high and low income groups grew further apart. Because of the war many factories were reopened and filled with activity to accommodate the orders of the war (Nishi 8).
The depression caused many hardships among the people of the world. It caused a time of struggle and pain. It took the dedication of many great leaders and the start of a world war to bring us out of those times. The Great Depression was the greatest downfall of the United States economy, which in my eyes could have been the cause of the end of the entire U.S. if the right steps wouldn’t have been taken.

Critical Review Of The Life of P.T. Barnum

P.T. Barnum is one of the most conniving and intriguing authors of the 1th century. His autobiography, The Life of P.T. Barnum, is the story of a man who made a fortune off of the “American Mass Culture.” P.T. Barnum set out to write a book in which he confessed to the countless number of “humbugs” he pulled all over the world. He shows no sympathy in the book for the multitude of customers he cheated during his lifetime, in fact he seems to embellish the idea that he was able to get away with almost all of them and profit from it. This is ironic however because if he wouldn’t have said anything then the majority of the population would have never found out that he cheated them. Barnum also writes to try and make the entire world to understand that he is not just a “serial-hoaxer” but also a man of temperance and intelligence. After the whole story has been read, the reader understands that P.T. Barnum was a ingenious man who used capitalism and “short term sensations” to prove himself the world’s ultimate showman. All in all The Life of P.T. Barnum is an ironic story because it tells of one man “exposing and mocking” the very schemes that made him rich in the first place.
Throughout his life Barnum was involved in many controversies over himself and the acts he brought with him. Whether it was because he was thrown in jail after writing an article about a orphan boy and a minister, or accused of showing off a woman who was 161 years old and turned out to be 80, Barnum was always involved in some controversy. His autobiography seems to purposefully display all of these incidents, or at least he important ones, in great detail. However, Barnum just telling it wouldnt be enough for his book, so he decides to tell everyone how he pulled the shade over their eyes. A perfect example of this is the Fejee Mermaid, for it wasnt until the release of this book that the mermaid was discovered to be monkey and a fish sewn together. This way of writing can be called capitalist irony for Barnum tells of his schemes that were conjured up in his head to make him money. This alone would make Barnum seem like a jerk, for why would he go back and throw it in everyones face that he had swindled them. Maybe it is because throughout his life people did that to him, for instance his grandfathers on going joke about Ivy Island (which was a worthless piece of land, that was made to be out to be his birthright and his fortune), which lasted about 6 years! Another explanation would be that Barnum was trying to let people in on the secrets of his trade, so that they would not be fooled by humbugs like that again. And even another explanation would be that he just wanted to come clean, for by that time he was a newly reformed man, that is he had signed the teetotal pledge. All of these might be true; nonetheless it is for the reader to decide.
By allowing the readers to make a choice Barnum is able not to take a stance on several issues of grave importance when writing a novel. These issues are what his message is, and what his intent for writing the novel was. This is precisely what makes the novel intriguing, for Barnum is able to take a neutral standpoint so he cannot be accused of saying anything directly. This allows Barnum to say anything he pleases, which gives the novel greater feeling of the truth. This portrayal of a neutral standpoint allows him to play off his high jinks as a straightforward re-representation. Thus it is assumed to be the truth however they were “rendered false by a succeeding explanation.” And in turn Barnum loses the good faith of the reader. The reason it is so easy for the reader to feel that way is because his stories are so outlandish and they sometimes seem to be a figment of his imagination. This assumption has great backing because in his book every one of the stories follows this style. Because of this constant reversal, Barnum’s book is almost a “chain of humbug(s)” making it hard for the reader to actually know if his biography is true or not. This played an important role in 1855 when other biographies like Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin and Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas were Barnum’s competitors.
Douglas and Franklin’s autobiographies play an important role in this for you can compare what a “correct” autobiography was to what Barnum wrote. Instead of a biography that was about promoting a better world, Barnum writes about his “self-making and self-reliance” he was considered one of those people who didn’t deserve an autobiography because he wasn’t someone that you modeled your life after. In fact Barnum’ Life was a huge controversy because of his scandals he portrayed and the way in which he wrote. I believe that this assumption of what a typical biography was wrong, for an autobiography is your life story and that is precisely what Barnum does. He takes his story of his life and recreates it for the American public. Granted he was trying to make money off of it, just like any of his events he partook in, but he is able to make his life more interesting and grand than any other I have read before. One reason it is particularly interesting is that Barnum dubs all of his success to advertising, not his morals, or family upbringing, but the wonders of the press.
Write my paper for me!!!
Barnum focuses on how advertising is the key to his success. Without advertising to the extent he did Barnum would have never achieved his success. Thus advertising leads into one of the key themes of Barnum’s Life, capitalism. Every aspect of Barnum’s life deals with capitalism, whether it is directly of in-directly. Not necessarily saying that money is his life, but it definitely plays a huge role. A perfect example of this is how he prints on several occasions the receipts from his shows/ventures. He states that he is doing it so that the reader can see that he is honest, however it appears to be a way for Barnum to show off to all of those people who betrayed or slandered him during the course of his life, almost him sticking his nose at them and laughing. That however doesn’t fit Barnum, for he states that everyone can gain wealth if they do want they are interested in, and they market themselves correctly. Barnum used advertisement in his life to achieve greatness over all of his competitors. It also can’t be ignored that Barnum used his book as a way of advertising and a way to gain more profit, for he is able to take events that almost the entire country knew about restate them on paper and sell it for money. Thus the reader is caught in an inevitable paradox, why did I buy this when I already knew what happened? The answer to this is that the reader wants to find out the specific details of Barnum’s life. Thus you enter another paradox between wanting to know the details of his life and not knowing whether or not you can trust them.
This idea of a paradox is present throughout Barnum’s narrative, but it does not distract form the quality of the read it just forces the reader to take a stance. The book is not cut, plain, and dry the reader has to use their own intellect to decide whether or not the book is believable or just another humbug. The one thing that you can say is that in his biography Barnum tries to make the audience “appear to have been an accomplice in his plans, instead of their victim.” This seems to be a reoccurring theme in this book, whether or not it is a direct attack or just a passive voice. I believe that it is both of these in fact. It seems that Barnum set out to write this book and actually tell people his life story, and after the writing process had begun he began to explore the book itself and write whatever he felt necessary. Some prime examples of where Barnum actually planned out to slander his audience come with the reporters Richard Adams Locke, James Gordon Bennet, and John R. Thompson, who all slandered Barnum in one way or another before the release of his book. Barnum got the last word in with his book when he was able to make all of the reporters who believed they got the best of him just a pawn in his big game of chess. This is also present when someone tries to upstage Barnum and being the showman he is, he always gets the last word in. Take for instance the John Jameson who owned land adjacent to Barnum. Barnum had deer in this land, and Jameson thought he could get a joke on Barnum by posting a sign that say he owned the deer, well before he knew it Barnum had written that Jameson was the game keeper to his (Barnum’s) deer. Now this seems insignificant, but that is precisely the point. Why would Barnum take time out of his writing process to add a two-paragraph piece about how he upstaged his neighbor? No other reason than that he liked to be seen as the head prankster.
In The Life of P.T. Barnum you are drawn in by Barnum’s sense of irony, which is present throughout the whole book. He is able to tell a story of his life so perfectly that you cannot even suspect him of slandering the very audience that reads it. He is also able to convey that dreams are what you make of them and utilize the great capitalism of the United States to make your “fortune” whether that be another “Iranistan” and just a small cottage in west Connecticut. Whether or not you choose to admit it, P.T. Barnum was the first man to actually capitalize on mass culture, and by doing so, forever proclaiming himself as the greatest showman on earth.

Introduction
Do my coursework
Over the past decade, wireless local are networks (WLAN) and mobile computers have played an increasingly important role in the information technology solutions of enterprises and institutions.
The Wireless Hotel
Most hotels and convention facilities operate in information-intensive and knowledge-based environments. The ability to access information, analyze it, use it for collaboration and distribute it is key to increasing productivity, reducing costs and being competitively successful in the worldwide hospitality industry. A robust, effective, and economical network infrastructure for information exchange is critical. Most hotels currently have multiple network infrastructures in place, and have invested significantly in completely separate telephone (voice) and data networks. This has led to a situation with many disadvantages including staffing duplication, additional costs for two physical networks, lost opportunities to exploit economies of scale, smaller impact on the bottom line, and, finally, the inability to take advantage of new applications.
The challenge for most hotel properties is providing more networking and value-added services for guests and administrative associates, despite flat budgets and no increases in network personnel. Merging voice and data networks is a step toward meeting these requirements, but simply sharing facilities for voice and data limits the leverage that a lodging facility can gain.
True integration of voice and data services increases productivity and overall effectiveness, while the development of innovative multimedia applications will create demands for new services from guests and new revenue opportunities for the hotel. By providing mobile workers with anytime, anywhere access to information via instant voice and data communications throughout the hotel, Symbol[1] is enabling the worldwide hospitality industry to be more competitive, productive and customer-centric at a reduced total cost of ownership.
Point of Activity Computing and Communications
Wireless communications and mobile computing technologies are changing the way hotels manage information. Standards in mobile computing operating systems software and wireless networking are in place today, and are central and critical to the delivery of a wide range of guest and hotel management services in the future.
Administration & Housekeeping
• Front desk agents and administrative staff can communicate voice or e-mail messages instantly to on-the-move security and maintenance personnel, using full-featured NetVision®[1] voice-over-IP devices, running on Symbols Spectrum4®[1] wireless LAN infrastructure.
• Housekeeping staff can use palm-held wireless computers to track and communicate inventory information of guest room supplies and mini-bar stock in order to ensure that carts are fully stocked and replenished in an efficient manner.
• A wireless wide area network bridge between multiple buildings in a hotel complex can provide significant savings in monthly telecommunications rental or lease fees for underground cabling. The wireless network will also allow users to tie directly to off-site phone systems, and to use corporate data intranets for voice transmission, enabling significant reductions in toll charges and pager/cell phone subscriptions.
• Using wireless-equipped hand-held computers or pen-based input devices, door persons or valets have real-time connection to PMS services such as express guest check-in, in order to provide room assignments, update guest/frequent traveler accounts, and access the Internet via Web browsing software capabilities - avoiding lines at the front desk.
Guest Services
• In guest rooms equipped with a wireless Ethernet access bridge (EAB) port or EAB-installed telephone, business travelers can use their notebook computer to access the Internet at 75 times faster than traditional dial-up speeds, while simultaneously talking on the guest room telephone. Equally important, guests can surf the Web without interfering with the hotels existing legacy telephone system, thereby alleviating any concerns from guests about blockage with incoming or outgoing lines.
• While connected to the wireless network, the hotel can provide a number of value-added computer and communications services for guests, including file sharing and printer services, hotel-specific intranet information regarding local sites, services and attractions, news and e-mail messages.
The hotel can also provide Symbol NetVision[1] Phones to mobile guests and business clients, so that theyre always in touch while enjoying the comfort and convenience of the hotel property facilities and services.
Food Services
• Room service associates supplied with Symbol NetVision[1] Phones can be in constant contact with food, beverage and banquet personnel, while roaming throughout the property. Imagine the productivity enhancements and responsiveness by re-directing staff to deliver and/or pick up food service orders, trays or carts while being mobile!
• Wireless point-of-sale systems can be located in difficult-to-wire environments such as pool areas, casino floors, leisure centers or common areas, as well as historic buildings and properties with large open spaces, providing point-of-activity revenue opportunities and new service offerings.
• Wireless pen-based terminals integrated with leading-edge restaurant systems can provide food & beverage facilities with breakthrough solutions that optimize efficiency, diminish lines and eliminate waits in a wide variety of hospitality applications. Restaurant processes such as order taking, payment processing, inventory control, wait-list management, valet parking, frequent diner program interface, and other applications can dramatically increase productivity, reduce costs, and improve customer service.
Casino/Gaming Operations
• Pen-based wireless computers connected to casino/gaming host systems can provide hotels with a wide variety of casino floor solutions including player club rapid enrollment, walk-about pari-mutuel betting, automated player rating, player information tracking and slot host services.
• As a thin client, a palm-held computer can accommodate the familiar Internet Web browser interface and be used to access Internet or intranet resources, make travel or restaurant reservations, schedule social activities/events and connect to other guest services - directly from the casino area.
• Casino or gaming operations that need to quickly deploy new networks, workstations, gaming terminals or printers can use the Spectrum4[1] wireless LAN as an extension to wired LANs, where theyre a pre-installed, ready-to-use LAN for special projects, temporary moves, or for peak times.
Convention Facility/Meeting Room Services
• Installing wireless LAN infrastructure in convention facilities and meeting halls offers hotel management with increased revenue opportunities in the provision of wireless computing and communications services to exhibitors at trade shows/conferences and to companies for in-property meeting needs. Wireless PC cards, radios and access/client bridges can be integrated into a wide variety of computing technologies (i.e., desktop PCs, notebooks, PDAs, kiosks, and printers), and can be augmented with a wide range of communications appliances and servers offered by Symbol. [1]
Summary
Hand-held computers, telephony appliances, and wireless LANs allow users to roam un-tethered throughout hotel facilities and properties, with real-time access to critical information when and where it is needed. Hotel associates and guests can access a wide range of information, applications, and computing resources, without worrying about connectivity. These technologies are enabling a wide range of hospitality applications including administration & housekeeping, guest services, food services, casino/gaming operations, and convention center/meeting room services.

In the developed world the right of free speech should be imperative, however, it is a myth. The Macquarie dictionary defines free speech as follows ‘the right to voice ones opinions in public‘. Also, worldwide organisations like the United Nations in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (article, 1), acknowledged, that everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers. (Newman 11 17) In support to this, I will examine the extent to which the developed countries - through political devices - are restricting the notion of free speech. The circumstances under which free speech is restricted in the developed countries, will also be examined. The objective of this essay is to examine the recent problem that the world is facing - terrorism and its war - and the restriction of the free flow of information in that matter, and consequently of free speech and opinions amongst the media as well as the people of the ’free’ world.
Historically, the most lasting argument for free speech came from the English philosophers John Stuart Mill and John Locke. Mill argued that open discussion was required for the discovery of truth. John Locke’s arguments in favour of freedom of thought and religious toleration have been co-opted in support of civil rights generally, as have the seventeenth-century political tracts of Benedict Spinoza. The scope of freedom advocated by Spinoza was ’That in a free state everyone may think what he pleases, and say what he thinks’. (Newman 1 17) However, the people of the past and their words of wisdom are not touching in anyway the leaders of the present, to implement an acceptable policy of freedom of speech.
Without any doubt, the notion of freedom of speech - in the developed countries - has been the beneficial tool for the progress of rational ideas, and consequently of actions, to pursue the global spirit of happiness and freedom. In many cases, however, the restriction of free speech has been applied - especially in political issues - where people have to base their own opinions on lies and disinformation.
Since the tragic event in America, on September-11-001, the United States government have imposed tough restrictions on the release of information to the media.
Write my paper for me!!!
This restriction creates disturbance and chaos amongst the people of the developed world for a number of reasons. First, disinformation causes ignorance amongst the people of the ’free’ world. Second, the entrapment of an unwanted war, and lack of knowledge, creates hostile resentments against innocent people. Third, it generates an impossible task for the free citizens of the ‘free’ world to express their own opinions in accordance to the matter - of terrorism and its war. Those, are some of the characteristics of the terrible consequences for the restrictions of free speech.
In addition to this, the international propaganda ( of silence) launched by the western alliance in conformity with the restriction of information, have influenced the viewpoint of the citizens of the developed world , in what way? The CNN international correspondents, Walter Isaacson, has said ‘We are entering a period in which there is a lot more reporting and video from Taliban controlled Afghanistan. You want to make sure people understand that when they see civilians suffering there, it is in the context of a terrorist attack that caused enormous suffering in the United States’. (The Washington Post 1 1-11-001) This is the hypocrisy of the international propaganda - led by the United States, which plays the major role in - these circumstances - of restricting the free flow of information. As well as the restriction of the interpretations of reality; which takes the citizens of the developed world into the fictional image of it. As a result, it creates the conditions for the people of the ’free’ world to distort the ‘truth’ or even worse, this situation gives the people of the ’free’ world only one choice, that is - silence. .
Furthermore, according to the Australian newspaper a respected Washington Post columnist Howard Kurtz quoted an unnamed military officer as saying the Bush administration would lie in pursuit of its military aims. This tactic was also used during the Gulf War (11), when misinformation was fed to the media (Jackson 1 11- 10-001) and as a result, to the citizens of the free world - where the restriction of free speech, in this case, has been imposed for political issue.
Also, during the Gulf War, waged largely by the US-led coalition in January 11, the public’s right to know was severely curtailed by strict censorship of operational details during the conflict. Commentators later suggested that the truth was the casualty in the official war propaganda released by both sides of the conflict. (Newman 4 17)
Therefore, the people of the developed world were overwhelmed by the political lies perpetuated by the politicians and their counterparts, with the major impact on the complicated and frustrating struggle to understand the issue. In this case the restriction of free speech as well as those of information have been once more at the expense of the people of the developed world.
The recent case - of the boxer Anthony Mundine - has been once again touching the concern of freedom of speech. Mundine was accused by the politicians, part of the media, and his promoters as one of the supporters of the terrorist attack in the United States. By those people; his comments were inexcusable; his words were against the war on terrorism fought by the western alliance; his observations - according to the people above him - were about to destroy his reputation and career. The ‘idol’ of many young Australians was about to be shut down.
Quite clearly, the restriction of freedom of speech, in this case, has been brought upon on one of the sport leading figure in Australia. The analysis of the comments in context of the boxer Anthony Mundine will conclude that without any uncertainty the restriction of free speech, is the case.
Further to this, Anthony Mundine was interviewed on Channel nine’s Today show on October nd 001, when he was asked what he thought about the war against Afghanistan. After explaining that he opposed the participation of Australian troops, Mundine said “It’s not about terrorism, it’s about fighting for God’s laws, and America has brought it upon themselves [for] what they’ve done in the history of time.” (Burke -10-001 ) The interview was suddenly cutthe network blamed technical difficultiesand all hell broke lose in newsrooms across the country.
Indeed, Mundine’s remarks were somewhat unclear. If the comments did reflect any sympathy on his part for terrorism then clearly they were misdirected. But that was not why he was attacked by the media - clearly, it was the concern to prevent any articulation of opposition to the war - and to such an extent that the restriction of freedom of speech was applied in that occasion by the media. Significantly, in light of the media reaction, Channel Nine later revealed that the public response to Mundine’s comments was far from being all negative. The network’s switchboard had been swamped by phone calls, half of them from viewers accusing station management of censoring the sports star because he had opposed the war. ( Phillips -10-001)
Moreover, in an article entitled “Punch drunk on perversity,” the Daily Telegraph’s columnist Piers Akerman warned Mundine that if wanted to “retain his right” to comment from “the safety and security of our democracy” then “he should support the US.” Akerman seemed oblivious to the obvious question what sort of “democracy” is it when only those who support the US-led war and the powers-that-be have the right to free speech? (Phillips -10-001 ) Indeed, the message is clear any criticism of the war, no matter how timid or confused, has to be silenced.
In conclusion, the hypocrisy of the restriction of free speech applied in the developed world, enhances the inconsistency of the notion of democracy. Many people had to succumb these concepts, in particular, those who wants to say something about it - in regard to the political issue. The case has been revolved around the matter of terrorism and its war. There are some people, who wants to express their own opinion in public for that matter - but they can not. There are some people, who likes to know the truth - but they can not. Also, the misinterpretation used by the media to frame Mundine and his personal opinions, the conclusion on the matter of free speech can be only one. The hypocrisy of the political world and - as George Kimball from The Boston Herald said ’The entire process smacks of McCarthyism at its worst’. (Warren 7 6-10-001) Clearly, the right of free speech is a myth.

FREUD VERSUS ERIKSON
Erik Erikson was a follower of the teachings of Sigmund Freud. Erikson expanded on the psychoanalytic theory established by Freud. Erikson recognized Freud’s emphasis on the importance of the unconscious mind, and that unconscious, irrational forces play a major role in the lives of people as they age and develop. The unconscious is largely formed during childhood, and its effects on people are often unknown to them.
The psychological theory of Freud relates everything in life to a sexual stage of development. Freud believed that there were five stages in human development. A person’s experience during these stages affected their behavior for the rest of their life. From birth to one year of age, Freud believed that the mouth was the baby’s center of pleasure. Weaning the baby from the bottle or the breast impacts his psychological development. Toilet training is the activity of focus during the anal stage from ages one through three. From ages three to six years, children are curious about the penis. This is known as the phallic stage, and boys are proud of their penises but girls wonder why they do not have one. Ages seven through eleven are a latent period. Children enjoy their childhood with play, school, and sports while their sexual urges lie dormant.
The genital stage begins in adolescence and continues through adulthood. The genitals are the most important organs. People continuously seek stimulation of the genitals and satisfaction of sexual urges.
Write my paper for me!!!
Erikson’s first five stages of development are similar to those of Freud. However, Erikson’s stages relate to social experiences in a person’s family and culture rather than sexual stages.
Erikson thought that infants learn to trust that others will take care of their basic needs, or they learn to mistrust others through neglect. Then as toddlers, children become autonomous by beginning to perform activities on their own such as walking, eating, or using the toilet. If they do not become more self-reliant, children learn to doubt themselves. Children attempt many adult activities from ages three to six. They want to be as grown up as possible, but when they step over boundaries set by adults, the result for the child is guilt. At this age, children should be allowed to take initiative in their activities with feelings of guilt kept to a minimum.
During adolescence, individuals try to determine who they are. They establish identities in political, career, and sexual arenas, or they are confused about what identities to take. Then, young adults seek intimacy versus isolation. This intimacy may be in a marriage or romantic relationship, or some other deep commitment such as religious or political conviction.
Contribution to the next generation is the goal of middle-aged adults who wish to avoid stagnation. Meaningful work in their communities with their families can fill this void.
As people age, they try to see the meaning of their lives. This stage is known as Integrity versus Despair, and life is seen as either meaningful and satisfactory, or feelings of despair arise over unfinished business.
Essentially, Erikson agreed with the ideas of Freud in unconscious development, especially that unresolved childhood conflict results in problems in adult life. Erikson adapted the stages of human psychological development from a sexual to a social nature. Both Freud and Erikson believed that a person’s experience early in life greatly determines their behavior and satisfaction in life.

Study Life in Tasmania, Australia
Introduction
I am a Year student of the Department of Shipping & Transport Logistics. Last semester, I participated in an exchange programme which was jointly organized by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Australian Maritime College. I gained a lot during my study in Australia and now I am going to share my experience in this passage.
Write my paper for me!!!
Four Months Abroad for a Lifetime Experience
February 00 was the first time I had visited Tasmania in Australia. I stayed in Australian Maritime College for one semester (from Feb to June). Those four months were filled with many amazing experiences -- academically, socially and personally.
My four months in Australia proved to be fruitful in every aspect. Not only did I learn much in the classroom. The experience of living in Tasmania also taught me much about this special state and its culture. I have to extend my gratitude to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Australian Maritime College for giving me such a wonderful exchange opportunity - and I would like to share my exchange experience with you all.
Before I arrived at the Australian Maritime College (AMC), I believed I would learn things that I could not get in my home institution, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). The course I took at AMC was part of a Bachelor degree in Business (Maritime and Logistics Management). I took classes in the following four subjects International Business, Human Resource Management, International Transport Systems and Business Research. The learning atmosphere at AMC slightly differed from that of PolyU - the classes were small, with only about 10-0 students per lesson. The relationship between the lecturers and students was closer than what I experienced in Hong Kong. In my classes, I found the students showed more willingness and aggressiveness in learning. They were active in the classes and always discussed academic issues with each other. Besides studying subjects which are native to Australia, I also experienced another countrys university system. Just like every nation has its own unique characteristics, the universities of different countries are distinct. It was a challenge to get used to the exams worth 40% of the course grades, the massive reading lists recommended by the lecturers and the independent study. Anyway, studying at AMC was an valuable and enjoyable experience.
The Australian Maritime College provided catered accommodation, the Investigator Hall, for the students from PolyU. The Investigator Hall is directly across from the Universitys campus. While living in the residential hall, I became totally immersed in the culture of Australian university life. The accommodation allowed me to receive adequate rest and ample opportunities for self-study and social interaction. Ten meals were served per week (lunches and evening meals from Monday to Friday). I ate Australian food like vegemite, roasted pumpkins and hamburgers with eggs. There were self-catering kitchens provided for the residents to prepare their meals during weekends.
The AMC attracted students from different countries. Many of the student residents in the Investigator Hall came from different countries such as Germany, Egypt, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. The diversity of the residential population ensured the rapid growth of friendship that lasts a lifetime.
The hall offered some great social events like the Cross-dressing Night and BBQ Dinner to enhance residents’ sense of belonging.
Although the majority of my time in Australia was spent on the AMC campus as a student, I had the opportunity to explore Eastern Australia during the semester break. Cities and attractions like Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast gave me chances to explore the beautiful and nice features of Eastern Australia.
Being exposed to the opportunities of travelling, meeting new people, studying some unique courses as well as living overseas, I discovered that studying abroad is not solely academic. My memories of studying aboard comprise of friends, classes, travels and adaptation to a different culture. Maybe my experience at the AMC and Tasmania was so amazing - I believe being an overseas student in Australia is an adventure mixed up with the culture, university, people and myself. This positive academic and social experience of my time in Tasmania was well worth the planning, cultural adjustment and plane trip.
Difficulties
Being an international student, I feel studying in a foreign country is quite challenging. It is not easy to live harmoniously in a new cultural environment and to study successfully across cultures. We need to leap over language barriers, to cope with the cultural shock, to overcome study difficulties and to struggle with emotional upheavals. For the first few weeks after I arrived at Australia, I was nearly overwhelmed by these combined factors.
Gains
After having got used to the new environment, I feel studying in Australia is also enjoyable. Since living in Australia, a multicultural country, I can experience many local customs and practices and make friends with people from all over the world. I shared not only Australian customs, but also customs and traditions from other countries. I met friends who were from Egypt, Africa, Singapore, Malaysia, China and Sri Lanka. I am keeping in touch with them and I am pleased to have such friends. As well, studying in Australia is rewarding. What I learned in Australia was not only from studies, but also from my daily life. The broadened new knowledge will obviously be helpful for a career success.
In short, it was in Australia that I experienced the hardest time in my life; it was also in Australia that I enjoyed an unforgettable time in life. In addition, after joining the exchange programme, I understood the difficulties faced by most exchange students. As PolyU is developing itself as an international institution, there are more and more foreign students studying in our campus. Hong Kong is an oriental city, and in order to help foreign students adapt to the lifestyle and customs of Hong Kong, PolyU has introduced a “Buddy Programme” hosted by its Academic Exchange & Collaboration Office(AECO). I have just joined the programme too. I hope foreign students will love Hong Kong better after they have completed their courses, in the same way that I enjoyed my short exchange life in Australia.

The second news item is the one that would affect me the most. Even if I rarely travel with airlines, out of the news items stated previously, the one about the possible delays in flights or luggage of flights travelling through the US. Not that I planned on travelling to the US anytime soon, but if I ever got the chance to go visit my friend in Thailand, Id have to take a flight that probably went through the United States. Automatically, this would put me on the list of the people who would be affected by this change in the airports. Not that it would be a big deal, but having to wait a couple hours at the airport for your luggage or even receiving it a day late is something that Id might want to take in consideration when I decide what goes onboard with me. I also know many people from outside the country who constantly talk about coming up to Canada for a visit. There too, having to wait at the airport for my visitors bags might shorten his time exploring our beautiful country by that much!

The Things They Carried
Unlike traditional war stories, The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brian, has no heroes. O’Brien’s various recollections of the Vietnam War reflect somewhat cowardice and embarrassing behavior. This unusual viewpoint of a war without a hero seems to reveal an inside look on day-to-day life in the middle of a major war.
The reason that O’Brian chose to write a war story with no heroes is that he wanted people outside of the war to see the truth. He wanted people to see that war is not full of fearless leaders and brave soldiers. War has a life-changing and hellish atmosphere that most stories tend to avoid. He does not believe that there is anything heroic about wars based on his many war experiences. OBrien shows that there are no real heroes in the war by trying to convey that everyone in war is just a regular Joe, some people just act smarter under extreme circumstances. The novel is filled with personal stories exhibiting each soldier’s good and bad characteristics. For example, in any other story, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross would be the groups’ fearless leader. But the truth comes out, and Jimmy Cross is far from fearless and is not much of a leader. His personal letters distract him enough to get a man killed. Throughout the novel, the faults and shame are layered on each person. He seems to prove that war can bring out the worst in everyone. The war brought the worst out of Mary Anne. The innocent blonde beauty was eventually filled to her eyeballs with the war and transformed into a dangerous fighter ready for the kill. “You come over clean and you get dirty and then afterward it’s never the same.” (pg. 114). Each person was affected by the war in some way. The war was what kept the soldiers from becoming heroes.
A hero in O’Brian’s point of view is someone of strong influence in the real world, as opposed being a hero of war, where people are taken by the extreme horror and despair. As far as O’Brian’s stories show, there is no such thing as a hero in a place of war. Throughout the novel, he refers back to his life outside the war. These stories involve real heroes back home, away from the fighting. At the end of the book, he tells a story about a young girl that he loved back in fourth grade. Her name was Linda and she had to wear a cap everyday because she was partly bald from sickness. She was teased everyday by classmates and a boy even took off her cap one day in front of the entire class. The way that O’Brian told the story, he made her seem like a hero in his life. Even people like his daughter had fairly heroic qualities.

O’Brian’s life-changing war experiences have made him see the heroes in his own life. In this novel, he hopes to tell the true war stories, with no heroes. O’Brian’s point of view contradicts the traditions of war literature and movies.
