The school bell rang. The seemingly endless Friday had finally come to an end. The tired and restless looks on each pupils face had instantly vanished into joy and excitement. John and Mark carelessly threw their books into their bags and began to head home.
“History has to be the most boring subject ever”, said John with relief, as they left the class.
“Oh I don’t know. Math gets pretty close.” He had a smirk on his face.
“Nah History with Johnson. As soon as he says a word, I can’t get my eyes open. So what you gonna do during the weekend?”
“Nothing planned really. May try to do some work. Pretty far behind. Why? Got any ideas?” Mark said inquisitively.
“Not really. May just go to the skate park. This place is just getting so damn boring, always the same thing. Nothing interesting ever happens. I’m sick of this place. We need something new to do.”
The road split, dividing their destinations.
“Yeah, well see ya. Call me later or something.”
“Yeah alright, catch you later”.
Mark finally reached the street which his house was located at. As he was drawing nearer and nearer, he heard a faint gasp for help. Mark instantly stopped his constant pace and looked to the direction which it was coming from. He carefully listened. Just when he had began to continue home, he heard it again but clearer. He jogged cautiously to where it was coming from. He peered around the corner and saw a man who looked oddly familiar. He was built and had dark hair and a rugged face. He had a knife to another man’s neck.
“I warned you before”, the familiar man said.
“But it wasn’t my fault? I didn’t even want to be in this”
At this point, Mark was uncertain what to do. His contemplation to help the man in danger was too late. Before he could react, the familiar man had slit his throat. The dying man cried out helplessly until he lay still on the floor. Mark quickly took off as silently as possible for safety, realizing the murderer was approaching his direction. He took the cover of a large trash bin and went unnoticed. The large man dragged the body into the back of his car, and took off casually. Mark was in shook and unsure what to do. He dashed back home and jumped onto his bed. He thought deeply where the man had seemed familiar but could not figure it out. He attempted to call John and tell him about it but could not.
Later that night, after having dinner with his parents whom he had not mentioned one word to, the same man he had seen in the ally was in front of him. He appeared even larger than in the ally-way.
“Why hello Sean. How are you?” spoke Mark’s mother to the man.
“Yeah I’ve been pretty good. And yourself?”
“Good thanks. Well I’m sure you have your own business to attend to. Hope to see you again soon.”
“Thanks, yeah you too. Bye”
Once the man was at a safe distance away, Mark quickly asked “Mom, who is that?”
“Why that’s John’s favorite cousin. They’re really close. They spend time with each other every so often.” Mark was hit was great shock, and unsure what to do. Maybe it was a different person he repeated to himself.
“Is there something wrong dear?” his worried mother said.
“…What? Oh no everything’s fine”, he replied in distraction.
For the whole night, Mark had a tough time sleeping. His head was filled with what he should do. He felt uneasy as he would always ask John for help, but for once he was unable to do so. In the end, Mark decided to tell John about his cousin.
The following day, Mark arrived punctually at school. However, John did not arrive. The idea of his cousin torturing him wall all Mark could picture. A sudden urge of energy dwelled within him. He had no clue what to do. The bell for the first period had rung. Mark jumped up and began to sprint to John’s place.
He arrived eventually in exhaustion. He knocked at the door and eagerly waited for a knock. Expecting his mother or someone of the family, to his surprised, Sean opened the door. Mark was speechless. There was a moment of silence. Mark could not look him in the eye.
“Yes can I help you?” Sean said
“Um is John around?”
“Yes, he’s upstairs. Would you like to see him?”
“Yes please”, Mark said with somewhat caution.
“Come right in”, he said openly.
Mark felt a great sense of distrust to why Sean was here, and what had happened to John.
“He’s right upstairs. You know where his room is right?”
“Um Yeah thanks.”
Sean took a seat on the sofa and switched on the television. Feeling safe momentarily, Mark took up the stairs and entered John’s room.
“John!”
“Mark?” John said with great surprise. “What do you want? What are you doing here?”
“What’s your cousin doing here?” he muttered.
“Sean? He’s taking care of me. I’m not well and my parents had to go out so he’s here to keep an eye on me.”
Mark was in despair. He had no idea what to do.
“John you’re cousin is a murderer. I saw him kill someone in an ally yesterday.”
“What are you talking about? Are you insane? That guys my best friend after you!”
“If I am your best friend, you will believe me. I know its hard to believe but you have to. Please”
“Alright, let’s say you are right, what do you intend to do?” he responded in disbelief.
“I…don’t know yet, but I know it isn’t safe here.”
“He’s my cousin! He isn’t going to hurt me!” he yelled in disgust.
“Well he may hurt me if he knows what I do” he spoke wearily
“Look I can prove it, well follow him when he leaves okay? Just tell your mom that you are coming to my place for dinner.’
John gave him a look a disagreement. “Alright”
They followed Sean that night with extreme caution. John felt ashamed, spying on his cousin. Mark on the other hand was worried of being detected. They followed him to a street they were unfamiliar of. He stopped, and peered around to make sure he was not being followed, and entered a unoccupied building. They quietly followed soon after. Within the building, was a man gagged and tied to a chair with thick rope. Sean and the man were far, but within vision of the two close friends. Sean began to thrash the man painfully. Blood oozed over his clothing and the floor. They exchanged fearful looks and crept out safely.
“Do you believe me now?” Mark said.
John remained silent for a moment. He appeared to be in a traumatic state. “What do we do now?”
From the shadows, Sean stepped out. “Nothing. You boys aren’t going anywhere.” John had never seen such a look from Sean. His eyes blazed like a dancing fire. He had cornered them in a dead end. He moved slowly forward. He wielded a switchblade.
As he was about to strike at Mark, John step in between. “What are you doing Sean? You’re my cousin and you’re going to kill my best friend?”
“You both have seen what I do. I cannot allow you to go.” His voice was cold and showed no sympathy. The howling wind combing their hair was all that could be heard.
“Stop right there! Don’t move! Drop the weapon” The shadow of a figure wielding a gun edged closer to the three. Sean turned, and dropped the knife. The man approached slowly. At last it was clear he was a police officer. He pushed Sean to the wall and cuffed his hands together behind his back.
“Officer?” Mark questioned
“Officer Martin,” he replied calmly. “I have been observing this person for a long time, but could not attain anything against him. That is till now. I lost him awhile back. Lucky I found you guys when I did.”
“Thank you,” Mark said.
“What’s going to happen to him?” John asked eagerly.
“Not sure, its not my choice.”
Sean was sentenced to life imprisonment. John never completely accepted his cousin’s behaviour and blamed himself for it for some reason. But with Marks companionship, they continued their early stage of their lives.

A Managerial Assessment Utilizing Panacucci’s Critical Dozen Administrative Qualities
Business in a Global Society
Professor Richard Panaccuci
Dan Goonin
December nd
For this assignment, the person I will be analyzing will be Bob Goonin. He is the Director/Founder of Step Up to Soccer a program which is designed to teach young children the basics of the game of soccer. I was a coach for this program in the summers of the last years of my life. Bob went to Brown University for two years of college before dropping out. He is my father, and also my boss during the summer. I have known him all my life and worked for him for summers.
1) Knowledge- A- (.67)
He gets an A- in the area because he has a vast knowledge of the field, he has ran this program for 11 summers, and has grown it from an idea to entertain me and my friends when we were young to a business serving over 50 daycare centers and over 000 children. He has worked hard to become knowledgeable in this field, researching and doing actually coaching to expand his knowledge. The reason he did not get an A was because he has never played soccer seriously himself and lacks some of the technical skills, but he gets around this problem by hiring coaches like me ho have played their entire lives and sending us into the field.
) Standards- A (4.0)
He doesn’t lack anything in this area, he is very clear about what is expected of a coach, and he has a set curriculum and although he doesn’t expect us to run our classes directly from the book it gives us a very clear idea of the type of stuff we should be doing. Before he hires a coach he goes over all the expectations and demands of the job ahead of time so the coach knows what he/she knows what they are getting into. This is an effective way of ensuring that the coach will enjoy the job and that they are right for it.
) Communications- B+ (.)
This is a little hard for me to judge because I live with him so I learn more about the inner workings of the company than most coaches. I believe from what I have seen with other coaches that he informs them about everything and anything that is pertinent to their job, but sometimes they do not seem to be informed about the overall situation.
4) Recognition- A (4.0)
This is an area in which Bob excels. Since he is not in the field with them and cannot see them in action, he has set up a great way of recognizing good work. At the end of each season, he sends in review forms for the daycare center to fill out. On this form is a review of himself as an administrator and of the coaches. Since most coaches work with or 4 centers, they have about 15 sets of rankings. Technical, how they are with kids, communication and interaction with the center and the parents, and timeliness. The coach will get reviewed in all 4 areas, and they get a rating between 1 and 5, with 1 being low and 5 being high. If the coach averages a 4 or better, they get a dollar bonus per class they taught that summer. In my case I averaged above a 4 and I had taught about 10 classes that summer so I got a 40 dollar bonus. This is a great way to get his coaches to work hard.
5) Empathy- A- (.67)
Bob is very good at understanding where his coaches are coming from. If a coach is feeling ill or has a serious commitment he/she must attend. He will not however, let it happen on a regular basis. He understands if it happens, but he excepts that it will not be a common occurrence. If a coach is absent from work on a regular basis, then penalties including possibly being fired will occur. The reason I didn’t give him an A is because in some situations I tend to think he is to trusting.
6) Consultative- A (4.0)
He has a system in place to get input from his coaches. At the end of the season, he gives the coaches a chance to review him as an administrator. He also gives them a spot where they can give any input for the curriculum as far as new drills or games to play with the kids, and also a spot for their input on the program in general and ways they think it can be improved. He takes the comments seriously, and it is not uncommon for a coach to suggest a game or drill and then find it in the curriculum then next year. He is not lacking in any way in this category.
7) Visibility Access- B- (.67)
The reason I gave him a low grade on this quality, was because he runs the program through a lot of email and phone calls. I give him more credit than his grade shows however, because in many cases there is a great distance between him and the coaches. It is also not a situation where it is necessary to see him everyday. He is however in constant communication through other forms with his coaches. He is almost always reachable if there is a problem. He does a good job being around whenever he is needed, but he doesn’t have face to face contact with his coaches everyday.
8) Follow Through- A (4.0)
I feel that whenever Bob says he will do something he follows through. I can’t remember a situation where he said he would do something and than didn’t follow through. He is good at not promising things he cannot do, and doing what he says he will. He is very reliable in almost all cases.
) Team Dynamics- B (.0)
He gets a B because he expects the best from himself and from his coaches, he knows that you win customers over by working hard and being attentive to their needs and he expects that from himself and his coaches. He didn’t get a higher grade because he doesn’t boast about the program and make the coaches feel like they are a part of something great, which in my opinion sometimes encourages letdowns. I believe if he worked a little harder to make coaches believe it is unacceptable not to be the best, then he would have less problems with coaches letting him down.
10) Consistency- A- (.67)
In almost all cases he is consistent and doesn’t show favoritism. He got an A- because he expects coaches to do their job, and when they do well, he rewards them, but if they don’t live up to his expectations, he will discipline them. The reason he didn’t get an A, is actually because of me. Usually he will not hire anyone that is has not yet graduated high school. Because I happen to be his son I had an advantage and when a coach quit mid season I was allowed to take over his classes. This was as a junior in high school. As a senior I had a full schedule and was a regular employee. The reason this didn’t hurt his grade more was because I proved to be a very reliable coach and got good reviews from all the centers I worked with.
11) Loyalty- B (.0)
He got a B in this category because if a center has a bad director or tough children to deal with he understands and will help as much as he can from an administrative standpoint. I didn’t give him a higher grade because in some situations there is not a lot he can do from his position. He will do all he can, but a coach will have to deal with tough kids and tough daycare center directors if feels like it is doable.
1) Connected to the Top- A (4.0)
This is a given A because not only is he coaches direct boss, it is a small business so he is the man at the top. If a coach has a problem or a suggestion they can give it to him and he does not have to ask anyone else, just himself. He has an advantage in this category because he runs a small business, it might be a different story if there was more employees in the business.
Bob Goonin’s overall average for this paper was a .58. This is about an A-.I believe this is a pretty accurate assessment of him as an administrator. He is overall a very good boss to work for, he is lacking in a few areas, but not many. I would love to work for bosses like him at all my jobs if I could. I have had multiple other jobs, and have seen both good and bad bosses, and all in all he ranks among the best I have worked for yet.
Categories I would need to work on to be a good administrator...
1) Recognition-
Sometimes I think I get to caught up in what I am doing or busy with that I forget that others are working as hard as I am. To improve upon this I would have to take time out of my days to make sure my employees were doing there job and reward the ones who are going above and beyond the necessary.
) Consultative-
This might be a problem because sometimes I am slightly thick headed, and if I think something is right than I will live and die by my opinions. This might hurt me because I might miss out on important information my employees might be able to give me. To work on this, I would have to accept that I can’t always be right and take advice from others. This doesn’t mean I would have to do what they say, I would have to make those decisions myself, but it would help to have input from others.
) Follow Through-
Sometimes I have a tendency to not follow through. This is because I get distracted, and get very involved in whatever is on my mind. This could be a problem because I can seem unreliable at times. It also might hurt me in the way that things might not get done when they need to get done. The way I could improve this would be to be more originized, and to try to focus more on what needs to get done.

University Days
University politics are the most vicious politics of allbecause the stakes are so low.-- Anonymous, sometimes falsely attributed to Henry Kissinger
October 11, 00
Im sure some of you have read James Thurbers1 essay University Days, a reminiscence of his years attending Ohio State University in the early part of the twentieth century. Thurber humorously relates the difficulties his extreme myopia caused him when he tried to use a microscope in biology class, how he and his fellow students did everything possible to help the dim-witted star fullback stay academically eligible for the big game against Illinois, and how he accidentally was the only ROTC cadet who performed the correct maneuver during a parade. If Thurber and his classmates never achieved academic superstardom, at least their time in college seemed to have been beneficial. At least a college education back then never seemed to do anyone any lasting damage, given that most professors in those halcyon days adhered to the Hippocratic dictum Do no harm. It all seemed sohow does one put it?wholesome. As I write this, Im having coffee at my favorite restaurant in Munich, the News Bar on the corner of Schellingstrasse and Amalienstrasse. Its located on the campus of Ludwig Maximilian University, an area full of good cafes, excellent bookstores and very attractive girls. A couple of blocks away on 50 Schellingstrasse is the site of the Nazi Party during the early 10s. Further down the street on 6 Schellingstrasse is the site of Osteria Bavaria (now Osteria Italiana), Adolf Hitlers favorite restaurant. What do these facts have to do with one another? Well, its not discussed much in the historical literature, but Nazism was largely the product of academia. To be sure, virulent anti-Semitism and dreams of world conquest have roots that extend far beyond the hallowed halls of ivy; but the systematic amalgamation of anti-Semitism, theories of the superiority of the German people, and the geopolitical movement to acquire Lebensraum was a product of the university, specifically Ludwig Maximilian University. Adolf Hitler, Hermann Goering and Rudolf Hess all took classes at LMU after World War I. Indeed, Hess was working on a graduate degree under the supervision of Professor Karl Haushofer, the chief architect of the concept of Lebensraum. The LMU student body was overwhelmingly pro-Nazi. LMU Student Body President Baldur von Schirach later became head of the Hitler Youth and subsequently was one of the Nuremberg Trial defendants who received a prison sentence for his crimes. And let us not forget that Joseph Goebbels received his doctorate in literature from the University of Heidelberg. My point is not to single out German academics for any special opprobrium. They were simply doing what their colleagues at Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and any number of universities throughout the English-speaking world were doing at the same time (and in many cases continue to do), namely, using the academic freedom and social prestige of the university to support a totalitarian vision of the future, one that would ultimately eliminate the universitys freedom and prestige if it ever came into power. In Germany the academics worshipped Hitler; in America and Britain they worshipped Stalin; and in America they still worship the ghost of Stalin. The idyll of Thurbers youth is a lost paradise of the imagination, existing today only in the pages of novels by Henry James and R. F. Delderfield. Thurbers parents sent him to college with the assurance that even if he didnt learn all that much, he would probably pick up some knowledge and perhaps a few social skills that would serve him in good stead for the rest of his life. After Thurbers time, parents sent their children off to college in what is essentially an academic crapshoot, hoping against hope that their offspring wouldnt get too damaged along the way as they picked up the sheepskin that statistics told us would ensure 5.7% more lifetime earning power over those poor souls who only managed to matriculate from high school. What went wrong? Why did universities in the 0th century abandon the search for truth in favor of the deliberate ideological distortion of truth? Why did universities reject the noble calling of being the repositories of knowledge in favor of becoming factories for the fabrication of falsehoods? And ultimately, why did universities reject freedom in favor of slavery and oppression? There are a number of reasons why Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Fidel, Che, Ho Chi Minh and Pol Pot have been the darlings of academia instead of Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Locke, Montesquieu and Cicero. Freedom, especially the American variety, is rooted in the natural law and in a respect for the lessons of history. Americans believe that humans are endowed with inalienable rights because we are born human, that is, with some of the divine spark of the Creator. And the form of this freedom is governed by centuries of human history that instruct us on the hows and whys of organizing a just and free society.Academics, on the other hand, are consumed with abstract plans that have no relationship to human experience. Undeterred by the failures of all totalitarian systems and regimes, academics continue to adhere to failed systems of tyranny because they are systems, and if the system is duly organized and its implementation is executed correctly, logic tells them that such systems should work. Failure, then, does not represent failure of the idea, only the failure to realize the implementation of the idea. For the academic Left (there is, in reality, no academic Right) will always believe in the essential perfection of communism regardless of how far the economy of Cuba collapses. It will always be America and capitalism, not Cuban Marxism, that the academics will blame for the failure of Castro to create Heaven on Earth in Havana.Another reason for the embracing of totalitarianism by academics is the desire for power. There is a fine line between wanting to instruct and wanting to control. Power is gained in academia by getting students to adhere rigorously to the ideas of their professors. In academia, knowledge is not so much discovered or created as it is cloned.Additionally, academics have embraced totalitarianism because of feelings of inadequacy, irrelevance and jealousy. Imagine the poor academic literary critic. The books he writes are read but by a few fellow academic critics. Yet the books he criticizes may sell in the millions. He feels he has no voice, no status in society next to the truly creative artist. The answer to the critics dilemma is, then, to eliminate the creative artist from the creative product. In such a scenario, only the critics voice breathes life into the work. Lacking the courage of his convictions, the critic decides that its too dangerous to actually engage in revolutionary action. Better to show his students that Moby Dick is a vehicle whereby white male oppressors of European descent (are there any other kind?) subjugate women, people of color and whatever minority constitutes the latest oppressed group du jour. Filled with revolutionary indignation, the students can then go out and remake the world while their academic mentors shuffle off into retirement and senility. And finally, there is another reason for the decline of the university. It is not talked about much, but its impact is profound. The decline of the universityindeed, the collapse of the entire educational system in the Western worldhas been aided, abetted and exacerbated by perhaps the most ignorant, anti-intellectual and loathsome collection of individuals in the history of mankinduniversity administrators. In Thurbers day, university presidents and deans considered themselves to be scholars. And generally they were outstanding scholars who had made some real contribution to the pursuit of knowledge. They had a love and respect for learning. There may have been a bit of the fustiness of the school marm about them, but they viewed their lifes work as something noble, something to be cherished because it was intrinsically good. And they were dedicated to the truth.Todays university administrators are money-grubbing whores, although I must apologize to both grubs and whores for comparing them to university administrators. The university has become a harlot, ready to lie, cheat, steal and spread her legs for whoever has the most money. Truth be damned, lets be trendy because that will generate a lot of publicity and notoriety. What? … Surveys show that incoming freshmen dont like grammar? … Well, then, well just ban the teaching of grammar. For you see, the university is no longer composed of scholars and students. It now has only facilitators and customers. You know, just like a crack house. The solution? There is no solution, and as James Burnham once said so famously, If theres no solution, theres no problem. Reform of the university is no longer possible. We need to start thinking of what will replace the university as it drifts off into meaninglessness like the academic enclave of Castalia in Hermann Hesses Glass Bead Game. But as for me, Im going to go ahead and keep reading the classics of Western literature; Im going to continue listening to Beethoven and Stravinsky; and Im not going to pay any attention to the tenured cretins of academia who say that Western civilization is an oppressive force. But as we continue to prosecute the War on Terror, perhaps a few smart bombs should be saved for those smart folks who make up the academic fifth column of terrorism.1.
Creating a graphic is very similar to expressing yourself to someone or writing. It is a very complicated process. When I make graphics, I can usually look back at it later and tell what type of mood I was in when I created it. I have millions of images on my computer, some are black, others, are bright. My graphics vary depending on what conversations Ive had that day or sometimes even what Ive eaten.
You must first think of something in particular that happened that day or maybe even that week. Here, you must take that feeling to the screen. Sometimes by the time I finish, it actually has nothing to do with what I originally thought about. It is a must to choose a topic for your graphic creation. You see, a graphic actually has a story in it. Not everyone can see it, but the creator can. In fact, graphics can be related to just about any type of literature. An entire website, for example, must have a theme, just like a story or epic. Everything must fit together just right to make it look good or go where it needs to be.
Secondly, you need to think of what the ending graphic might possibly look like. Will it be happy or bright? Will it be scary or intriguing? One thing that you most certainly want your graphic to do is catch your audience’s attention quickly. Much like a lame character in a story sets what type of mood the scene is, your graphic will set how your audience will interpret your site. In other words, if you are making a florist’s site, you don’t want to have a black graphic, you want it to be as vibrant as the flowers they sell.
After all that, you finally get to choose the tools that you will use. You must be familiar with the program that you are using. There are an unlimited number of choices to choose from when selecting a program to use such as Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Fireworks, and JASC Print Shop Pro. For example, I use Photoshop to make my graphics and I am still learning many of the options, but I now have the basic idea of most of them. If you feel dreary this day, you may want to choose dark colors or possible pale colors. Simply create a box or whatever comes to your mind first. In Photoshop, I would choose the square tool and simply click on the screen and drag my mouse pointer to make exactly what size box I would want. Then, I might go to filter, choose the option blur, then select Gaussian blur. Now a pop-up screen will appear allowing me to choose exactly how much I want to blur the object. Blurring the object will give it a sort of sad look if you choose the colors correctly. It will also add a faded look to the object so that it doesn’t stand out from the page quite as much. This is similar to going inside your head and selecting what type of mood you would like a particular character in your story to have.
Continue to make other shapes until you are happy with what you have come up with. Just as a writer will go into detail until he feels he has fully described the scene, you must go into detail until your graphic is fully illustrated. After it’s all said and done, does your graphic look anything like you thought? Maybe it looks happy but you thought it would be sad. If it is not what you thought, somewhere down the line, you started to think of something that threw you off the original subject. It happens to me all the time. Congratulations on your first interpretation of a graphic!

Roger Fry
Imaginative Life - The opposite of “actual life” where we are free of fears to focus upon
the perceptive and emotional aspects of the experience, which gives us a different set of
values.
Actual Life - in this the process of natural selection have brought it about that the
instinctive reaction such as flight from danger. From this man bends his whole conscious
endeavors.
Art & Morality - Morality appreciates emotion by the standard of the resultant action.
Art appreciates emotion in and for itself
Emotional elements of design vs. likeness to nature - We may dispense for once and for
all the idea of likeness to nature, of correctness and incorrectness as a test, and consider
only whether the emotional elements inherent in natural form are adequately discovered,
unless, indeed, the emotional idea depends at any point upon likeness, or completeness of
representation.
DE CHIRICO
Presentiment - a sensation passed onto us from pre-historic man. We might consider it
as an external proof of the irrationality of the universe. Original man must have
wandered through a world of uncanny signs. He must have trembled each step.
Uncanny Signs - Chirico describes a scene in Versailles where silence and calm rained
supreme. He realized that every corner of the place possessed a spirit, an impenetrable
soul. He looked around at the statues and grew aware if the mystery which urges men to
create certain strange forms. The creation appeared more extraordinary than the creators.
Status of Recognizable material in art - We should rid ourselves of all recognizable art.
We must hold faith in ourselves and that out conceptual image have no sense in itself,
have no subject, and mean absolutely nothing from the logical point of view. The
revelation or conception should speak so strongly in us that we are compelled to paint.
HENRI MATISSE
Status of Literal Representation - By removing oneself from the literal representation
of movement one attains greater beauty and grandeur. Movement itself is unstable and is
not suited to something durable like a statue, unless the artist is aware of the entire action
of which represents only a moment.
Status of Copying Nature - Those who work in a preconceived style, deliberately
turning their backs on nature, miss the truth. When an artist is painting he should feel
that he has copied nature. And when he departs from nature, he must do it with more
conviction that it is only to interpret her more fully.
Beneditto Croce
Art as intuition vs. art as a physical fact - Art as intuition acquires significance as well
as strength from all that it implicitly denies and from which art is distinguished. What
are the negations it includes? This denies that art is a physical fact, as for example,
certain particular colors or combinations of colors, forms of the body, sounds or
combinations of sounds, phenomena of heat and electricity, in brief, anything which goes
under the name ‘physical.’
Intuition vs. Conceptual Knowledge - Conceptual knowledge in its pure form (which is
that of the philosophical) is always oriented toward reality and aims to establish the real
as distinguished from the unreal, or to diminish unreality in status by including it within
reality as a subordinate part of itself. In contrast, intuition refers precisely to the lack of
distinction between reality and unreality - to the image itself - with its purely ideal status
as mere image.
FREUD
Id/Ego/SuperEgo - The id provides for the discharge of quantities of excitation. The
id has one function, to obtain satisfaction for instinctual needs in accordance with the
primary principle. The ego controls/regulates the id. Superego deals with morality,
ideals, and perfection. It works by internalizing structures of authority.
Displacement - is chiefly responsible for our being unable to recover or recognize the
dream-thoughts in the dream-content, unless we understand the reason for their
distortion.
Condensation - The combining of several dream thoughts into one dream content.
Repression - what is rejected by censorship is in a state of repression. This happens
when the conscious mind “forgets” objectionable material. This happens because it’s not
understood or a traumatic experience that can’t be processed by the child.
Sublimation - A phychological process whereby drives, such as the sexual drive, are
transformed into different expressions, such as transforming a powerful sexual drive into
a drive to make money or to excel in a given field.
Cruelty/Sadism - The cruelty component of the sexual instinct develops in the child with
still greater independence of those sexual activities which are connected to the erogenous
zones. Cruelty is intimately related to the childish character, since the inhibition which
restrains the mastery impulse before it causes pain to others - that is, the capacity for
sympathy - develops comaparatively late. As far a Sadism goes, basically if a child
witnesses the act of sex at an impressionable age, they can’t help as conceiving the act as
a kind of maltreating or overpowering, and it impresses them in a sadistic sense.
FAUVISM
CHARACTERISTICS Intense, bright, clashing colors, distorted forms and perspectives,
vigorous brushstrokes, flat, linear patterns, bare canvass as part of overall design. Used
intense colors that have nothing to do with an objects appearance but everything to do
with his own outlook.
Fauvism and Realism - The Fauve experience was for many artists a period of
liberation, marking the moment at which they escaped from the conventions of realism
and the confines of the conventional palette to achieve a realization, on which their
future careers would be built, that the artist was concerned with the primacy of his own
personal vision, and with creating a world which he himself controlled.
Henri Matisse - credited with creating the movement of Fauvism. Nude in the Studio
188, the purity, the violence of the color conveys a sense of audacity that disguises the
resolute quest for formal coherence, inherited from Cezanne, which Matisse was never to
abandon. Too much to write about him.
Maurice de Vlaminck(self taught) - wrote ‘Painting was an abscess which drained off all
the evil in me. Without a gift for painting I would have gone to the bad. What I could
have achieved in a social context only by throwing the bomb, which would have led me
to the guillotine, I have tried to express in art, in painting, by using pure colors straight
from the tube. Thus I have been able to use my destructive instincts in order to recreate a
sensitive, living and free world.’ The Bar Counter 100 (Phoebe Wray)
Andre Derain - along with Vlaminck was making visual experiments in the same
direction under the influence of Van Gogh. He brought to the Fauves something of the
same vigor and panache as his friend Vlaminck; he too used color directly from the tube,
applied in broken lines with quick impetuous brush strokes. His most associated piece is
Lady in a Chemise 106. The multiplicity of the colors and tones, the flickering
flame-like brushwork, the exaggeration of the face and eyes, the heavy pendulous and
slightly distorted left hand, the partial use of a contour line to define those parts of the
figure which play a dominant part in the composition, create an impression of
adventurousness which in the long run turned out to be alien to his talent.
From Masks by August Macke
The status of Form - to create forms means to live. Thunder, flower, and force
expresses itself as form. So does man. As man changes, so do his forms change. The
relations that numerous forms bear to one another enable us to recognize the individual
form. Man expresses his life in forms. Each form is an expression of his inner life. The
exterior of the form of art is its interior. Each genuine form of art emerges from a living
correlation of man to the real substance of the forms of nature, the forms of art.
Form vs. the senses - The flower opens at sunrise. Seeing his prey, the panther
crouches, and as a result of seeing it, his strength grows. And the tension of his strength
shows in the length of his leap. The form of art, its style, is a result of tension. Forms are
powerful expressions of powerful life.
From On Primitive Art by Emil Nolde
Greek art / ideals - Art teachers are less enthusiastic than they used to be about the
statues of the so-called golden age of Greece. Our predecessors’ ideals are not our ours.
We now love and respect the lesser knowns in their plain, large scale carvings in
cathedrals.
Primitive Art - Why is the art of primitive people’s not considered art at all? Primitive
people create their works with the material itself in the artist’s hand, held in his fingers.
They aspire to express delight in form and the love of creating it. Absolute originality,
the intense and often grotesque expression of power and life in very simple forms - that is
why we like these works of native art.

I think one of most influential activities that I have had is Presidential Class room. As I am an international student, it is hard to represent myself in front of native speakers as much as I did in Korea. But by attending Presidential Class room, it has changed. When I went to Washington D.C. there was no one I knew, no Korean who can speak Korean with me. But actually that point made me who I am right now. During Presidential Class Room, if i want something, there is no other way but say it aloud what I want. All the conferences that I had during Presidentiall Class Room taught me how to represent myself in front of many people. And I didnt want to be isolated from people, so I tried to speak English more and more. Thats encouraged me to speak English more fluently.
And the section of Presidential Class Room that I joined is Science and Technology. I have been interested in Science and Technology for such a long time. Seeing new invention and meeting the pioneer of modern technology was really a impressive experience that I will never have again. NSA, NASA staff, FBI, and Lockheed Corp Staff, it is not even possible to imagine in my normal life. But also meeting people that I like to meet encouraged me to speak out. Having a conversation and listening their lecture was not only helpful for English skil but also helpful for knowledge of Science. It helped me to appreciate science even more.

Die Towards Immortalization
We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like Die Towards Immortalization even at the eleventh hour. The Snows of Kilimanjaro is one of Hemingway¡¯s best short stories. Hemingway¡¯s style and spirit are fully presented in this story the use of simple words, the subtle description of human psychology, paragraphs of stream of conscious, and the thought about death.
The story tells us the last day of Harry. Along with the dialogues between Harry and Helen, Harry¡¯s mental activities, his dreamland and rainbow, we get to know the whole life of Harry. We experience Harry¡¯s process of dying. And together with him, we also experience Harry¡¯s boredom of his corrupt life, his deeply self-reflection and then to the disillusionment. At last, we find the essence of life and get the immortalization of the spirit. The story impresses me most is the word ¡°die¡±, which was used several times through the story. The story is mainly divided into three parts.
We can easily feel the death from the beginning of the story. Harry said to Helen Cant you let a man die as comfortably as he can without calling him names?¡± From this sentence, we can know that Harry didn¡¯t care for death, he even longed for that, for he was tired of everything. He came to Africa for starting his life again because Africa was where he had been happiest in the good time of his life. But now, the beautiful scene in his eyes are disgusting the big birds squatted obscenely; the huge, filthy birds sat, their naked heads sunk in the hunched feathers; A fourth planed down, to run quick-legged and then waddle slowly toward the others. The snow-covered Kilimanjaro can nearly cover everything. No one has explained what the leopard was seeking at that altitude, maybe it was seeking for death. Death can be felt mainly through the description of the scene in the first part. From it, we hold the feeling that nothing is worth to cherish, even life is not valuable in the highest mountain. Death is so close to both the hero and the readers.
However, when fell into asleep, Harry dreamed of the happy hour in his life. The snow, the pure thing, has ever brought so much happiness in his past life. It was snow the girls tramped along in until they died that winter. It was snow too that drifted over the deserter¡¯s tracks. In Schrunz, on Christmas day, the snow was so bright it hurt your eyes when you looked out from the Weinstube and saw every one coming home from church. The snow as smooth to see as cake frosting and as light as powder and he remembered the noiseless rush the speed made as you dropped down like a bird. They were snow-bound a week in the Madlenerhaus that time in the blizzard playing cards in the smoke by the lantern light. His memory about snow was all delighted, contrary to the present, although he was in the snow-covered mountain, he detested being living and longed for death.
The good memory aroused his yearn for life. It¡¯s just because of the cognition of the joy of life, he turned to rage from boredom. We know that it is the process of turning alive from dead.
In the second part, death can be felt primarily according to Harry¡¯s stream of conscious. The word ¡°die¡± or ¡°dead¡± appears eleven times here, among them, seven times are Harry¡¯s feelings about death. Let¡¯s take a look at how Harry¡¯s attitude towards death changed. First, ¡°If he lived by a lie he should try to die by it¡±, he still thought he should die because he hated the world. He damned the love and the money. He said love is a dunghill to imply the depraved life he and Helen lived in rich area in Paris. Then he began to analyze how he degenerated in the rich¡¯s country. By analyzing his psychological activities, Harry¡¯s wrath towards others transformed into the venom and compunction to he himself. Therefore, ¡°It occurred to him that he was going to die. It came with a rush; not as a rush of water nor of wind; but of a sudden, evil-smelling emptiness.¡± Only when one is alive he can feel about death. It was because Harry began to examine himself and began to survive from the death of his own spirit that he suddenly felt death. In the second stream of conscious, Harry recalled he and his lovers and the quarrels between them, his experience in war and things like that. With the deep analysis of his degeneracy and the aggravation of his illness, Harry felt death constantly. He could even see dead men wearing white ballet skirts and upturned shoes with pompons on them. Im going to die tonight, he said. He felt death come again. So this was how you died, in whispers that you did not hear. He lay still and death was not there. It must have gone around another street. It went in pairs, on bicycles, and moved absolutely silently on the pavements. All these show that Harry was no longer careless about death, by contraries, he became aware of it. The third and fourth stream of conscious state Harry¡¯s impression of Paris and his life in the countryside after war. He understood the poor and loved them. Their life is poor but vigorous, which brought inspiration for Harry¡¯s inditement. Nevertheless, his talent and volition were run out of in the seeking for enjoyment and lust with the noblewomen. Now he wanted to write down the interesting and genuine stories he experienced, but he is going to die. How can¡¯t Harry regret about that! He walked towards death step by step, and also walked towards virtue from coarseness step by step by evoking his soul.
Many contrasts can be found in the third part. We know Harry he had nothing about the pain at first, but now he was frightfully hurt by the pain and nearly wore out, he couldn¡¯t bear the pain just like the bombing officer asked Harry to shoot him when his bowels spilled out into the wire. Although Harry claimed that he did not care for death, he truly felt the pain. It is the pain from his soul. It is a kind of repentance to his whole life after his self-reflection. The keenly felt pain made him decide to fight against death. He had just felt death come by again. Because, just then, death had come and rested its head on the foot of the cot and he could smell its breath. Harry was tired of everything at the beginning; now, he was getting as bored with dying as with everything else. The hallucination of being rescued can be seen as his fight against death. His body was dying gradually while his spirit kept on subliming. At last, his body died. But his spirit, the longing for resuscitation, became immortal. All he could see, as wide as all the world, great, high, and unbelievably white in the sun, was the square top of Kilimanjaro. And then he knew that there was where he was going. Compare with the snow-covered scene in the beginning, we can fell the snow scene in the Kilimanjaro, the most beautiful and pure thing under the sun, become eternal in our mind. It glares on the summit of the Kilimanjaro, and also shining in our hearts. It is the immortalization of the spirit.
The whole story depicted Harry¡¯s psychological activities exhaustively. By looking back to his past, his soul had been baptized and got close to immortalization. It gives us the hint that his death is towards immortalization. Hemingway¡¯s spirit ¡°A man can be destroyed but not defeated.¡± is thoroughly revealed in the story, too. Harry died at last, he was destroyed by the gangrene. But he was not defeated, instead, his spirit is immortal. Death just means the cold of the body. If only we keep on seeking for gracious virtue, just like the leopard on the western summit of Kilimanjaro seeking for, everyone of us can die towards immortalization as Harry did.

For over a decade now many people have been trying to improve the appearance of their homes. People want their homes to reveal their way of living. This would include culture, beliefs, attitude and values. As Faith Popcorn states, gHome improvement is a $14 billion business.h1 Many industries have realized that people want to focus on their homes and make them look as personal as possible.
The lives of people are very active and challenging. Many people work full time and they do not have time to come home and renovate their home. The most reasonable thing for them to do is hire an interior designer. The cocooning era has increased sales in furniture and home design expenses. Data was found from 7 participant vendors who stated that 40% of sales came from accent furniture. The vendors also stated that the top selling products came from tables, armoires, cabinets and large chests.
Competitorsf analysis
The companyfs main competitors are the Crate & Barrel, Habitat, and the Pottery Barn.

The debate about the euro in Britain has changed dramatically since the
introduction of euro notes and coins on 1 January 00. This shift should
give pro-Europeans every confidence that a referendum on the single
currency can be won. Consequently, it has already left anti-Europeans appearing
disheartened and disoriented.
This historic changeover to the euro was obviously a profound change
for the 00 million citizens of the twelve European Union countries that adopted
the currency. It was a revolution on Britain’s doorstep that has practical
implications for most British citizens.
Most obviously, Britons make 40 million visits to the euro-zone every
year, either on business or holiday. From 8 February, when the old European
currencies were finally withdrawn from circulation, these visitors will have to
use the euro exclusively.
In addition, tourists from the euro-zone are expected to make 1 million
visits to Britain this year. Those visitors will come here with euros in their pockets,
thus any British business that is able to deal in euros will have a significant
advantage in competing for European tourist business from now on.
There is already some anecdotal evidence of hotels that do not accept
euros losing out to those that can. More worryingly for the British economy,
there is a serious risk that European tourists may choose to holiday within the euro-zone rather than incurring the money-exchanging costs and extra
inconvenience that a trip to Britain would entail.
British firms have every reason to complain that the British government
did not do enough to prepare business for this momentous change. More could
and should have been done. After all, two years ago the government spent £60
million raising public and business awareness of the millennium bug, and £80
million tackling the threat to its own systems. It even set up a company, Action
000, to give the issue a high-profile.
By way of contrast, Gordon Brown, the Chancellor of the Exchequer,
disclosed in November 001 that the Treasury had only spent £. million on
preparing British firms for the introduction of the euro. This negligence on the
practical question of preparations for the euro may well leave British businesses
vulnerable in commercial terms.
The Impact of 1 January
Prior to 1 January, most British people took little interest in the issue of whether
or not Britain should join the single currency. The euro was an intangible, virtual
currency. Although it had already had a major impact on British businesses, it
was not a visible reality for the vast majority of British people.
In fact, most British people knew little about the euro; as a result, they
told opinion pollsters they did not support British membership of the euro yet.
However, public opinion polls carried out since 1 January have showed
substantial rises in public support for the euro. Although it is expected that
support will fall away in the coming months, it indicates that opposition to the
euro is shallow and moveable.
Support for joining the euro among British business has risen dramatically
over the past few months. An HSBC survey of 14,000 companies, mostly small
and medium-sized, carried out after 1 January, showed that 61 percent now
believe that euro membership would benefit their company. The figure was only
percent in 1. The annual MORI Captains of Industry Survey of FTSE
500 senior board directors found that 5 percent would like Britain to join the
euro in the near future. The figure was 44 percent in 000.
Additionally, polls show rising public and business support for a sooner
rather than later referendum on the issue. A recent Institute of Management
survey found that 64 percent of managers think that 00 should be the year
the government makes clear its timetable for British entry. Significantly, a poll
of public opinion carried out in February 00 found that 67 percent of the
general public wanted the issue resolved soon by a referendum.
As a result of this dramatic shift in public opinion, and the momentum
that it has given to the pro-euro campaign, speculation is growing that the
government will call a referendum in the Spring of 00. Pressure from business
and political leaders for the government to announce its intentions has been
intense. The introduction of the euro has made people aware that there is a
political and economic price to be paid for Britain’s isolation from the new
currency.
The Price of Isolation
Isolation from the euro carries serious risks for Britain. As long as Britain’s
position remains uncertain, it risks losing trade, inward investment, and jobs.
And of course British consumers will continue to be burdened by the highest
price levels in Europe.
Britain has long been a trading nation. For the past 00 years our
economic success and the prosperity of our people have depended on our ability
to trade competitively with our partners in other countries. Today, Europe is
Britain’s most important trading partner. Over half of our trade is with the
countries of the European Union, and almost 60 percent of British exports go
to those countries. It is estimated that 750,000 British businesses are involved
in trade with Europe.
Britain’s trade with its European partners has expanded dramatically
since it joined the European Union in 17. At that time, only 5 percent of
British exports were destined for European markets. Over time, the European
Union has systematically removed tariff and non-tariff barriers to trade between
its members. This liberalization has been of enormous benefit to Britain. Indeed,
the United States is experiencing the same effect as NAFTA reduces barriers to
its trade with Canada and Mexico.
By creating a single currency, the European Union has removed the last
major barrier to trade between its members. This is a liberalizing step with
potentially enormous significance, the effects of which are already starting to
be felt in the euro-zone.
For example, in 18, prior to the creation of the euro, German imports
and exports to other euro-zone countries accounted for 7. percent of GDP.
By 001even before the notes and coins had been introducedthat share
had risen to 1.4 percent. This phenomenal rise has been replicated in other
euro-zone countries. In France, the corresponding figures are 8 and percent.
In Italy, and 4.4 percent.
By contrast, Britain’s imports and exports to the EU have fallen slightly
as a share of GDP, from .4 to percent. Britain is already missing out on the
trade boostand therefore to our national prosperitythat the euro is already
starting to deliver for its members.
In the long term, this effect could be enormous. One U.S. academic,
Professor Andrew Rose of the University of California, has predicted that
membership of a common currency could triple the amount of trade between
member countries over 0 years. Even if this proves to be an overestimate, the
fact that Canadian provinces do twenty times as much trade with each other as
they do with U.S. states an equal distance away, and with whom they share
culture, language, and a single market must tell us something about the importance
of a separate currency as a barrier to international trade.
Business in the UK has suffered a serious competitive disadvantage as a
result of the volatility of the pound sterling. The overvaluation of sterling, and
its frequent and unpredictable fluctuations on the foreign exchange markets,
makes it difficult for British exportersand their customers in Europeto plan
ahead with any degree of confidence.
The euro means that; for instance, a French firm selling to Italy no longer
has to worry about whether the currency will change in value. However, British
firms still do. Over time this uncertainty and the extra risk involved in buying
from a firm based in Britain could well erode the competitive position of Britain
in the European market.
Indeed, Britain is more exposed to currency fluctuations than either the
United States or the euro-zone. This fluctuation is caused by the fact that
manufacturing exports to countries with a different currency account for 7
percent of UK’s manufacturing output, compared to 1 percent of the euro-
zone’s, and 14 percent of the United States’. Joining the euro would reduce
these kinds of fluctuations and risks with Britain’s biggest trading partner.
In addition, every year British firms selling to Europe spend £4.5 billion
dealing with the costs of having a separate currency. That is a Sterling Business
Tax of £1 million every day that British businesses pay because we are isolated
from the euro. By eliminating these costs, Britain’s European competitors have
taken one step ahead, while we are left behind.
Up to .5 million British jobs depend on Britain’s exports to Europe.
Many of those jobs are at risk as a result of Britain’s isolation from the euro.
Since the start of the euro on 1 January 1, around ,500 job losses every
month have been blamed on Sterling’s volatility outside the euro. Exporters
that have lost orders, foreign firms that have cut back on investment, and the
small firms that supply them have all been affected.
The risks of long-term exclusion for Britain’s prosperity could be
profound. Indeed, if Britain does not decide to join the euro soon, the
consequences could be similar to those we experienced as a result of the disastrous
decision not to join the EEC at its inception in 158. By the time Britain became
a member in 17, its competitive position relative to its European partners
had already been seriously eroded.
While we were outside the EU, French and German economic growth
and increases in productivity far outstripped Great Britain’s. Between 150 and
17, Britain’s GDP per capita increased by .5 percent per year, while France
and Germany raced ahead
with figures of 4.1 and
5.0 percent, respectively.
By contrast, British,
French, and German
average growth rates have
been almost identical
since Britain joined the
EU in 17, at 1.7, 1.6,
and 1.8 percent. German annual productivity growth between 150 and 17
was more than double Britain’s, but the figures are virtually identical for 17
to 15.
Britain’s economic decline relative to its European neighbors was marked
in the period it spent outside the Common Market. Between 158 and 17,
Britain’s share of investment into Europe declined from around 40 to 15 percent.
Since joining, its share has risen to 8 percent in 000.
Membership in the European Union has helped Britain attract enormous
amounts of investment from foreign firms looking for a base to export into the
European market. Britain offers many attractions, but access to Europe is one
of the most important. Those foreign investors have created up to 1 million
jobs and the new expertise and investment that they have brought to Britain
have had much wider benefits for the competitiveness and productivity of the
British economy.
Ruling out membership of the euro would put this investment at risk.
The longer Britain stays out, the more likely it is that international companies
will think twice before they consider Britain as a viable proposition for inward
investment. U.S. and Japanese investors have made it clear that if Britain rejects
the euro, they would reject Britain and move to Europe.
Figures released by Ernst and Young show that Britain’s share of new
inward investment projects coming into Europe fell in the first half of 001.
The figures also showed that Britain attracted 1 percent of new European
investment projects. In 18, the year before the euro was launched, Britain
attracted 8 percent of such projects.
The decision by Nissan to continue producing cars at their Sunderland
plant was directly linked to the decision by the government not to rule out the
single currency. This has guaranteed thousands of jobs at the Nissan plant and
thousands more in the local economy. As Jac Nasser, former chief executive of
Ford Europe made clear “When we sit down and think about a major investment,
Over time this uncertainty and the
extra risk involved in buying from
a firm based in Britain could well
erode the competitive position of
Britain in the European market.our assumption is that the UK will be within the euro-zone at least at some time
during the lifetime of that investment.” Unless Britain decides to join the euro
in the relatively near future, more investors will begin to seriously question the
validity of this assumption. Prolonged delay will be seen as a de facto decision
to reject the euro.
Isolation from the euro is not only a macroeconomic issue, affecting
trade, inward investment, and national prosperity, but it also affects the price
British consumers pay. It is known from bitter experience that it is cheaper to
shop elsewhere in Europe than in Britain. A number of independent studies
confirm that Britain is more expensive than countries in the euro-zone for most
branded goods. A recent study by the Economist Intelligence Unit compared
prices between Britain and France. In France, the latest U CD was £ cheaper
than in Britain, Levi jeans were £5 cheaper; Reebok trainers were £11 less; and
a Panasonic TV cost £0 less. This is the Sterling Shopping Tax and it is a tax
that British consumers would not be paying if Britain joined the euro.
Not only are prices in Britain higher than those elsewhere in the euro-
zone, but there is also evidence that sharing a currency is narrowing the disparity
between the countries of the euro-zone. A recent study by investment bank
Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein, has shown that the coming of euro cash is
already widening the gap between British prices and those in the euro-zone. In
Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris and Rome, prices have moved to within percent
of each other, but in London they are 16 percent above the euro-zone average.
As Leo Doyle, chief economist of DKW said, “Big brands are moving to euro-
wide prices on the Continent because they cannot get away with different prices
after January 00. In Britain costs cannot easily be compared.”
If Britain joined the euro, British consumers would benefit as price
transparency forced prices down here. This is because the euro promotes
competition, and competition brings prices down. It would be much easier for
shoppers to see price differences, and massive consumer pressure would push
prices down.
About 00 million consumers in the euro-zone can now compare prices
in the twelve countries that have adopted the euro. Every price is in the same
currency with no exchange rate movements to distort them. Retailers in Europe
now face the kinds of competition experienced by their U.S. counterparts those
with higher prices have nowhere to hide and so are forced to cut them.
If British shops did not cut their prices upon euro adoption, many of
their customers would shop overseas over the Internet or by mail order. With
easy price comparisons and no exchange rate movements, more people than
ever would do this. Thus, British shops would have to respond or risk losing
business. The people of the euro-zone are already benefiting from the spur to
competition that one common currency has brought. The extra competition
that Britain would enjoy would not only benefit British consumers, but
businesses as well. The extra consumer pressure would force British producers
to innovate, to improve productivity, in order to become more competitive and
benefit from the wider economy.
These are all serious economic concerns, which will weigh increasingly
heavily on the British debate over the coming months. They are concerns that
the government will have to take into account when they assess their five
economic tests by which they will judge whether entry is economically appropriate
for Britain.
Tony Blair has made clear that the result of the government’s assessment
of those tests will be made public no later than June 00. A positive assessment
will lead to the government recommending entry to the British people, who will
have the final say in a national referendum.
A further delay beyond this time frame would be equivalent to a firm
rejection of membership. Anti-Europeansmost of whom oppose British
membership of the euro on political and constitutional groundsknow that
prolonged delay is their best hope of keeping Britain out of the euro. Of course,
there would be political as well as economic costs to a decision not to join the
euro. The European Union has recently embarked upon a far-reaching discussion
of its future structure, responsibility, and objectives, as it prepares to welcome
up to twelve new member states from central and eastern Europe.
It is crucial that Britain’s influence in these discussions be maximized,
so that it can ensure that Europe develops in a way that serves Britain’s interests.
But we cannot really expect to shape these discussions if we decide to turn our
backs on Europe’s most important developmentthe euro.
The anti-Europeans who propose delaying a decision on euro membership
until we can see the outcome of these negotiations know perfectly well that
Britain’s clout will be less if it stays outside the euro. Many of them would
secretly welcome an outcome of the Inter-Governmental Conference that did
not serve Britain’s interests. Such an outcome would help to provoke a terminal
rupture in Britain’s relations with the rest of Europe, which is the ultimate
objective of isolationists and europhobes.
To say no to Europe and rule out the euro would be to give up on a
course that has yielded so much for so many over the past three decades. Politically
and economically, Britain has much to gain through membership, and much to
lose if it makes the wrong choiceor worse, if it does not have the confidence
to make a choice.
Recent events have reinforced the belief that the British people have
too much sense to reject increased prosperity in favor of isolationism. The Prime
Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer should have every confidence
that the British people would vote yes to the euro in a referendum. Britain
cannot afford not to.

Are Soldiers only Suffering?
An examination of All is Quiet on the Western front
Are soldiers the only people who suffer during war? During the terrifying and tragic time of war, not only are soldiers affected, but the people left behind at home suffer as well. In Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front , terrifying situations become reality to the many men, women, and children who are affected by war. One example of this is when Paul, the main character and narrator of story, along with his comrades, run into three French women across a stream who seem to be incredibly famished. Another example when we can see that not only soldiers suffer from the war is when Paul is talking to his mother while she is lying in her bed. Finally, we can see this reality while Paul is on leave. During this time, he goes to visit the mother of one of his deceased comrades to inform her of what happened to her son. Through these examples, Remarque helps his readers to understand his ambition to show that while the soldiers experience and live in these horrific realities, we must remember that war affects and changes all of our lives, sometimes without even noticing it.
Bored, and with not much to do, Paul and his fellow soldiers come across three young French girls who they quickly begin to talk to. After trying their best to talk to them with their little knowledge of French language, Tjaden, one of Paul’s fellow soldiers, comes up with a clever idea to persuade these young girls. “Tjaden is more crafty. He runs into the house, gets a loaf of army bread and holds it up. That produces a great effect. They nod and beckon us to come over.” (pg.144 Narrator). These poor, young French girls are hungry and have little to no other sources of food. With the soldiers offer, they invite the young men over. It seems they feel this is there only way of being able to eat. The war has had such an effect on them that they must sell their bodies so they can stay alive during this crazy time of war. Remarque creates this situation to show that along with the soldiers, people were suffering and had to go to extremes to be able to stay alive.
“You ought not to send your things to me, Mother. We have plenty to eat out there. You can make much better use of them here.” (pg.184 Paul). Paul sits by his mother’s side on his last night of his leave. His mother is sick in bed and Paul is not sure how much time she actually has left. “How distute she lies there in bed, she that loves me more than all the world.” As Paul sits next to her he remembers all of the things that she has done for him, and knows just how much she does not want to say good-bye. “How can it be that I must part from you. Who else is there that has any claim on me but you? Here I sit and there you are lying; we have so much to say, and we shall never say it.” (pg.184/Paul) Paul and his mother both realize that this could and most likely will be the last time they are able to talk to each other. Reality has sunk into them and they must say there last good-byes, not knowing what tomorrow will bring.
During Paul’s leave, one of his many adventures includes bringing the news of a death to the mother of Paul’s good friend Kemmerich. The news of her sons death shocks and upsets Kemmerichs mother more than Paul expected. “’Why are you living then, when he is dead?’... ‘Did you see him? Did you see him then? How did he die?’” (pg. 180 Paul/Kemmerich’s mother). It is hard to imagine the pain and agony which this news must have brought poor Kemmerich’s mother. To have to cope and except the fact that you will never be able to see your son again. To have no last words with someone you care and love so much. We can see here that Remarque is attempting to prove to us that not only the soldier goes to war, but the entire country goes. And when a man falls on the battlefield, not only does he die, but a part of the country dies.
All Quiet on the Western Front was written by Remarque in the years shortly proceeding the end of World War I. At this time, many people were mourning and reflecting on the personal losses the war brought into their lives. Without a choice, without a say in the matter, people lost their children, husbands, and friends for something which they relatively did not know much about. Today, we can see the tragic history of this repeating itself. Families and friends of soldiers not knowing if they will ever hear the voices of their loved ones again. From the experiences which Remarque shares with us in his book, we see that he wants to show his readers that the time they have together with people should be cherished and not taken advantage of. He attempts at conveying the reality that war can and will destroy people without the weapons and bombs, by slowly eating away at them internally. I personally agree with the theme in this book that war affects not only soldiers, but the people left behind because the validity of this is seen not only in the history of the many wars which have taken place in the past, but in our society today. Taking this into consideration, we must realize that the actions which are being taken today will affect us for the rest of our lives.
