Adolescence of Time

Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s The Little Prince explores the relationships of age and understanding, while emphasizing the theme of time. The Prince meets a businessman during his travels who believes he is too important and powerful to do anything but work. He is upset by The Prince’s need to ask questions which bother him, and distract him from his job. In response to these interruptions, the businessman says, “I have so much work to do! I’m a serious man. I can’t be bothered with trifles!” (Saint-Exupery 6). The businessman conveys a serious demeanor lacking adolescence and joy.

Saint-Exupery has The Prince meet the switchman and the single flower in the desert to explain why adults waste time running in circles searching for extra time. Referring to men, the flower says, “The wind blows them away. They have no roots, which hamper them a good deal” (Saint-Exupery 5). Adults feel they are powerful and therefore are always attempting to try and conquer while children are satisfied understanding that to gain something true, you must have patience. According to the switchman, “only the children know what they are looking for…They spend their time on a rag doll and it becomes very important, and if it’s taken away from them, they cry” (Saint-Exupery 65). The children care for their doll as The Prince cares for his rose.




Saint-Exupery introduces the wise fox to offer a different view point of time as opposed to the one The Prince received from the isolated men on their individual planets. The isolated men believe one should always be working very hard for the things he or she cares about. “Now, I’m a serious person. I have no time for daydreaming,” (Saint-Exupery) said the businessman. On the contrary, the fox believes patience will nurture a relationship leading to mutual dependence. The fox helps The Prince understand why his flower is truly unique and one of a kind, not just an ordinary rose from a rosebush. He says, “It’s the time you spent on your rose that makes your rose so important…You become responsible forever for what you’ve tamed” (Saint-Exupery 64).

The pilot is introduced by Saint- Exupery not only to teach The Prince, but to learn from him as well. Through their interaction, The Prince helps the pilot learn to slow down and appreciate things, even in a time of peril. In return, the pilot teaches The Prince of worldly things. Just like The Prince gave the fox the gift of seeing him in the golden fields of wheat, both The Prince and the pilot give each other the stars. “You’ll have stars that can laugh” (Saint-Exupery 77) said The Prince referring to his laugh that the pilot enjoys, and “I’ll be looking at the stars, too… All the stars will pour out water for me to drink,” (Saint-Exupery 7) said the Prince. After they tame each other, they become dependant upon one another. The Prince provides the pilot with the patience to find a well in the desert, and the pilot provides the prince with the strength to gather water from the same well.

The alternating view points the different characters possess give each a unique outlook on the power of time. There are many unique relationships created throughout the book. The Prince learns about time, which controls one’s being and one’s destiny, but ultimately helps one to discover love.
