Fascinated With Death
Mr. Poe has that indescribable something which men have agreed to call genius.” This is how James Russell Lowell described Poe (Poe’s Problematic Biography). Edgar Allen Poe was one of the great American authors ever; his work was ground breaking and that is why he is still famous today. Poe sets the standard for horror writing because of his creative style and crazy ideas (Wilson, James). Poe was definitely born with a natural talent for writing horror, but there were many other factors that affected his writing. One very important thing that had a big impact on Poe’s ability to write such gloomy and scary stories and poems was his own life experiences; his life gave him more inspiration for his work in literature. Poe’s life experiences are one of the factors that made his writing so authentic and successful today.
Poe had a very hard childhood; he experienced death, hardship, and unhappiness. Poe’s father abandoned his family shortly after he was born, and he watched his mother die a year later. This must have been a very troubling thing even for such a young child to go through. Experiencing death first hand at such a young age must have left some lasting impression on him, some sort of fascination with death. This almost certainly affected his work. You can see this in many of his works such as “The Cask of Amantiladio.” This is my favorite of all Poe’s work I have read. It’s such a scary situation. Poe had a special talent for thinking of terrifying situations; this came in part from his life I think. After his mother’s death the Allen family took him in. Young Poe’s life took another rough turn after he and his stepfather quarreled and his father refused to pay for Poe’s college and broke off Poe’s engagement to Sarah Elmira Royster, his Richmond sweetheart (Regan, Robert). After a series of events, Poe with the help of his stepfather enrolled at WestPoint. But within a year he was discharged, after this Poe and his father became estranged (Wilson, James). These personal troubles in Poe’ young life provided more modivation for his gloomy writing; you can tell how he was releasing his feelings in many of his works. A life this full of hardship must have made for a dark side of him.
The rest of Poe’s life was also hard. The pattern for Poes career was success as an artist and editor but failure to satisfy his employers and to secure a livelihood (Regan, Robert). He was stuck in poverty, and he never really settled down because he had to move around to find work. The middle part of his life was when he produced most of his work. In the later part of his life he again experienced death, this time it was his wife, Virgina, died in 1847 (Regan, Robert). After that he lived the remaining part of his life alone and unhappy and he died this way. During the time after his wife died he did produce some good work. Some of it, such as “The Raven”, was very dark, as you would expect from a man in his situation. Still despite all the hardship in his life Poe’s work was viewed as excellent by nearly everyone. All the reviews I found agreed, including George Lippard who said, Poe was born a poet, and his mind is stamped with the impress of genius”(Poe’s Problematic Biography). I agree with this assessment. I think that one of the reasons he was so great was because of his ability to write horror stories, which he got in part from his life of hardships.
So in conclusion Edgar Allen Poe was a brilliant author and poet, one of the best ever. His work in horror is especially good. His gloomy style of writing really is interesting. His gloomy work was influenced by his life. He had a hard and tragic life and this influenced his work.

In recent years there has been an overwhelming amount of migration to the Unites States. In these migration numbers there are children whom are entering the public schools and looking to learn English. There are various approaches to teaching English, such as immersion, remedial, enrichment, and pull out. In my paper I will discuss the enrichment model. I will be taking a look at the pros and cons and also getting a point of view from a product of the enrichment model.
In the enrichment model the children are taught in two languages simultaneously, and both native and non-English speakers are included. This is a very good way to teach the children a new language, because they are all learning something that they don’t know so this way they don’t have to feel left out and if they say something in a funny way they wont be laughed at because all the children are in the same situation. Teaching this way is also good for the children, because they are keeping their own native languages as the primary language.
Teachers in enrichment classes don’t teach the traditional way, which would be directly from the book. The teachers in the enrichment classes use cooperative learning, literacy development across the curriculum. They use critical thinking and learning strategies to create a hands on learning environment for the children. In order to keep these classrooms operating the way they do, the staff/teachers go through an ongoing teacher/staff development in which the teachers/staff will share their different experiences and problems. In these sessions the teachers will offer up suggestions to the other teachers whom may be having problems in their classrooms. This kind of help makes everyone keep up the good spirits about the program and also lets the teachers feel like they can turn to another colleague of theirs with out having a problem.
In the enrichment program the students receive the mainstream curriculum through both their primary language and English, with challenging academic work. Ovando, C.J., and Collier, V.P. (18). There are materials and books that present a cross-cultural perspective so that the student may be able to relate the United States with their own countries. There are national goals that are set for the enrichment model which are that the students (1) will develop high levels of prophecy in their first language () students will perform at or above their grade level in both languages () the students will demonstrate positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors and show a high level of self-esteem. (www.ncbe.gwu.edu/miscpubs/ncrcds11/epr1/ pg.)
Many people may argue that the enrichment program many sound nice, but there is, of course a catch to it. They say that the enrichment model is not practical for every community due to their not being enough money to pay the amount of teachers that would be needed. It is also said that there would also need to be a huge amount of community involvement in order to have a successful model, and in some communities there are not even enough parents who would want to participate never mind the community. In addition there was a study done by D’Acierno she found that “bilingual education programs may have a negative effect on cognitive ability if they are not supported by their family” (cited in Latham 7).
On the other hand there are people who believe that there are countless advantages of the enrichment model. They say that the enrichment model “maintains and supports the native language” (Latham 80). It also teaches children from both non-English speaking community and English speaking communities so that they may view the world form more than on perspective. The students are learning English in school and bringing it home to their parents so that they may become more English proficient.
After interviewing Jessica Ortiz a student whom now lives in Rhode Island, but she is from the Dominican Republic. Jessica Ortiz was a student whom participated in an enrichment program in California. Miss Ortiz says that the program was “great” she says that it was hard at first, but she got use to it very quickly. She says that it helped her also, because when she first came to the United States she did not know any English and because of the program she has graduated from high school and now is a freshman at the university of Rhode Island. She also says that it has helped her family, because she has taught them the things that she was learning.
In conclusion many people assume that if there is a lack of English understanding will make it hard for one to come to the United States and live a normal life, there are others who say that children are being forgotten about because there are so many attempts to make them learn English. I believe that if people just start to look at it form a Childs point of view and also look at what is in the better interest of the child now and in the future there would not be so many arguments. We as future educators need to realize that every child weather English speaking or non English speaking they are going to have there own way of learning, it may be hands on, visual, listening what ever it may be there are always going to be ups and downs to a learning style or program.

The school bell rang. The seemingly endless Friday had finally come to an end. The tired and restless looks on each pupils face had instantly vanished into joy and excitement. John and Mark carelessly threw their books into their bags and began to head home.
“History has to be the most boring subject ever”, said John with relief, as they left the class.
“Oh I don’t know. Math gets pretty close.” He had a smirk on his face.
“Nah History with Johnson. As soon as he says a word, I can’t get my eyes open. So what you gonna do during the weekend?”
“Nothing planned really. May try to do some work. Pretty far behind. Why? Got any ideas?” Mark said inquisitively.
“Not really. May just go to the skate park. This place is just getting so damn boring, always the same thing. Nothing interesting ever happens. I’m sick of this place. We need something new to do.”
The road split, dividing their destinations.
“Yeah, well see ya. Call me later or something.”
“Yeah alright, catch you later”.
Mark finally reached the street which his house was located at. As he was drawing nearer and nearer, he heard a faint gasp for help. Mark instantly stopped his constant pace and looked to the direction which it was coming from. He carefully listened. Just when he had began to continue home, he heard it again but clearer. He jogged cautiously to where it was coming from. He peered around the corner and saw a man who looked oddly familiar. He was built and had dark hair and a rugged face. He had a knife to another man’s neck.
“I warned you before”, the familiar man said.
“But it wasn’t my fault? I didn’t even want to be in this”
At this point, Mark was uncertain what to do. His contemplation to help the man in danger was too late. Before he could react, the familiar man had slit his throat. The dying man cried out helplessly until he lay still on the floor. Mark quickly took off as silently as possible for safety, realizing the murderer was approaching his direction. He took the cover of a large trash bin and went unnoticed. The large man dragged the body into the back of his car, and took off casually. Mark was in shook and unsure what to do. He dashed back home and jumped onto his bed. He thought deeply where the man had seemed familiar but could not figure it out. He attempted to call John and tell him about it but could not.
Later that night, after having dinner with his parents whom he had not mentioned one word to, the same man he had seen in the ally was in front of him. He appeared even larger than in the ally-way.
“Why hello Sean. How are you?” spoke Mark’s mother to the man.
“Yeah I’ve been pretty good. And yourself?”
“Good thanks. Well I’m sure you have your own business to attend to. Hope to see you again soon.”
“Thanks, yeah you too. Bye”
Once the man was at a safe distance away, Mark quickly asked “Mom, who is that?”
“Why that’s John’s favorite cousin. They’re really close. They spend time with each other every so often.” Mark was hit was great shock, and unsure what to do. Maybe it was a different person he repeated to himself.
“Is there something wrong dear?” his worried mother said.
“…What? Oh no everything’s fine”, he replied in distraction.
For the whole night, Mark had a tough time sleeping. His head was filled with what he should do. He felt uneasy as he would always ask John for help, but for once he was unable to do so. In the end, Mark decided to tell John about his cousin.
The following day, Mark arrived punctually at school. However, John did not arrive. The idea of his cousin torturing him wall all Mark could picture. A sudden urge of energy dwelled within him. He had no clue what to do. The bell for the first period had rung. Mark jumped up and began to sprint to John’s place.
He arrived eventually in exhaustion. He knocked at the door and eagerly waited for a knock. Expecting his mother or someone of the family, to his surprised, Sean opened the door. Mark was speechless. There was a moment of silence. Mark could not look him in the eye.
“Yes can I help you?” Sean said
“Um is John around?”
“Yes, he’s upstairs. Would you like to see him?”
“Yes please”, Mark said with somewhat caution.
“Come right in”, he said openly.
Mark felt a great sense of distrust to why Sean was here, and what had happened to John.
“He’s right upstairs. You know where his room is right?”
“Um Yeah thanks.”
Sean took a seat on the sofa and switched on the television. Feeling safe momentarily, Mark took up the stairs and entered John’s room.
“John!”
“Mark?” John said with great surprise. “What do you want? What are you doing here?”
“What’s your cousin doing here?” he muttered.
“Sean? He’s taking care of me. I’m not well and my parents had to go out so he’s here to keep an eye on me.”
Mark was in despair. He had no idea what to do.
“John you’re cousin is a murderer. I saw him kill someone in an ally yesterday.”
“What are you talking about? Are you insane? That guys my best friend after you!”
“If I am your best friend, you will believe me. I know its hard to believe but you have to. Please”
“Alright, let’s say you are right, what do you intend to do?” he responded in disbelief.
“I…don’t know yet, but I know it isn’t safe here.”
“He’s my cousin! He isn’t going to hurt me!” he yelled in disgust.
“Well he may hurt me if he knows what I do” he spoke wearily
“Look I can prove it, well follow him when he leaves okay? Just tell your mom that you are coming to my place for dinner.’
John gave him a look a disagreement. “Alright”
They followed Sean that night with extreme caution. John felt ashamed, spying on his cousin. Mark on the other hand was worried of being detected. They followed him to a street they were unfamiliar of. He stopped, and peered around to make sure he was not being followed, and entered a unoccupied building. They quietly followed soon after. Within the building, was a man gagged and tied to a chair with thick rope. Sean and the man were far, but within vision of the two close friends. Sean began to thrash the man painfully. Blood oozed over his clothing and the floor. They exchanged fearful looks and crept out safely.
“Do you believe me now?” Mark said.
John remained silent for a moment. He appeared to be in a traumatic state. “What do we do now?”
From the shadows, Sean stepped out. “Nothing. You boys aren’t going anywhere.” John had never seen such a look from Sean. His eyes blazed like a dancing fire. He had cornered them in a dead end. He moved slowly forward. He wielded a switchblade.
As he was about to strike at Mark, John step in between. “What are you doing Sean? You’re my cousin and you’re going to kill my best friend?”
“You both have seen what I do. I cannot allow you to go.” His voice was cold and showed no sympathy. The howling wind combing their hair was all that could be heard.
“Stop right there! Don’t move! Drop the weapon” The shadow of a figure wielding a gun edged closer to the three. Sean turned, and dropped the knife. The man approached slowly. At last it was clear he was a police officer. He pushed Sean to the wall and cuffed his hands together behind his back.
“Officer?” Mark questioned
“Officer Martin,” he replied calmly. “I have been observing this person for a long time, but could not attain anything against him. That is till now. I lost him awhile back. Lucky I found you guys when I did.”
“Thank you,” Mark said.
“What’s going to happen to him?” John asked eagerly.
“Not sure, its not my choice.”
Sean was sentenced to life imprisonment. John never completely accepted his cousin’s behaviour and blamed himself for it for some reason. But with Marks companionship, they continued their early stage of their lives.

Adolescence of Time
Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s The Little Prince explores the relationships of age and understanding, while emphasizing the theme of time. The Prince goes on a series of journeys where he begins to create a unique belief system of his own. The characters he meets offer distinct perspectives concerning the importance of time and love. Thus, helping The Prince decide for himself what he truly loves, and how he will go about caring for those things. Different insight and experience into the world provide the characters from The Little Prince with contrasting views of time with relation to each other.
Throughout this book, one finds many similarities between the experience a character has had, and their opinion of how one should value his or her time. Most of the adults in this novel feel they are always lacking time. They believe time is one of their most valuable assets when it comes to hard work. The Prince meets a businessman during his travels who believes he is too important and powerful to do anything but work. He is upset by The Prince’s need to ask questions which bother him, and distract him from his job. In response to these interruptions, the businessman says, “I have so much work to do! I’m a serious man. I can’t be bothered with trifles!” (Saint-Exupery 6). The businessman conveys a serious demeanor lacking adolescence and joy.
Saint-Exupery has The Prince meet the switchman and the single flower in the desert to explain why adults waste time running in circles searching for extra time. Referring to men, the flower says, “The wind blows them away. They have no roots, which hamper them a good deal” (Saint-Exupery 5). Adults feel they are powerful and therefore are always attempting to try and conquer while children are satisfied understanding that to gain something true, you must have patience. According to the switchman, “only the children know what they are looking for…They spend their time on a rag doll and it becomes very important, and if it’s taken away from them, they cry” (Saint-Exupery 65). The children care for their doll as The Prince cares for his rose.
Saint-Exupery introduces the wise fox to offer a different view point of time as opposed to the one The Prince received from the isolated men on their individual planets. The isolated men believe one should always be working very hard for the things he or she cares about. “Now, I’m a serious person. I have no time for daydreaming,” (Saint-Exupery) said the businessman. On the contrary, the fox believes patience will nurture a relationship leading to mutual dependence. The fox helps The Prince understand why his flower is truly unique and one of a kind, not just an ordinary rose from a rosebush. He says, “It’s the time you spent on your rose that makes your rose so important…You become responsible forever for what you’ve tamed” (Saint-Exupery 64).
The pilot is introduced by Saint- Exupery not only to teach The Prince, but to learn from him as well. Through their interaction, The Prince helps the pilot learn to slow down and appreciate things, even in a time of peril. In return, the pilot teaches The Prince of worldly things. Just like The Prince gave the fox the gift of seeing him in the golden fields of wheat, both The Prince and the pilot give each other the stars. “You’ll have stars that can laugh” (Saint-Exupery 77) said The Prince referring to his laugh that the pilot enjoys, and “I’ll be looking at the stars, too… All the stars will pour out water for me to drink,” (Saint-Exupery 7) said the Prince. After they tame each other, they become dependant upon one another. The Prince provides the pilot with the patience to find a well in the desert, and the pilot provides the prince with the strength to gather water from the same well.
The alternating view points the different characters possess give each a unique outlook on the power of time. There are many unique relationships created throughout the book. The Prince learns about time, which controls one’s being and one’s destiny, but ultimately helps one to discover love. Saint-Exupery creates a cultural melting pot swirling with different ideals helping a little boy to discover his inner self, and if one is lucky enough, he or she might discover a bit of their inner self as well.

The Unsympathetic Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire
Blanche DuBois is the most famous female character in A Streetcar Named Desire written by Tennessee Williams. It is an unusual observation to make about the heroine of the Pulitzer prize-winning play, A Streetcar Named Desire, but a very concise and perceptive characterization. Although Blanche is considered to be the principal character, she most often emerges as an unsympathetic character -- a selfish, proud woman, a sexual predator, who lives largely in a luxurious world of her own creation. Blanche DuBois is a difficult woman who would probably try the patience of Job with her theatrical hysterics, encouraging value judgments, and calculated deceit. It is interesting how she is presented as an unsympathetic character even though she is the primary objective of the play in the story.
Blanche DuBois arrives in New Orleans (on a streetcar named Desire) from Laurel Mississippi, for an extended visit with her sister Stella and Stellas husband, Stanley Kowalski. She resembles a faded flower, a fallen Southern belle who is comfortable only in plantation surroundings, and is decidedly out of place in the blue-collar neighborhood in which the Kowalskis lives. Blanches pompous airs are immediately evident, and when the sisters have their first conversation, there is little wonder why Stella couldnt wait to distance herself from her familys Mississippi plantation, Belle Reve. Blanche wastes little time in criticizing where Stella lives, as well as her physical appearance. She attempts to take the vinegar sting out of her acid remarks with a little sugar What are you doing in a place like this?... Never, never, never in my worst dreams could I picture -- Only Poe!... Youve put on some weight, yes, youre just as plump as a little partridge! And its so becoming to you!... You messy child, you, youve spilt something on that pretty white lace collar! About your hair -- you ought to have it cut in a feather bob with your dainty features (1801-180).
In one rare moment of truth, Blanche notes, I know I fib a good deal. After all, a womans charm is fifty per cent illusion (1811). Blanche DuBois can tell lies with such a straight face, which is almost chilling. Blanche is an escapist who says, I do not want realism. She hides from bright lights, just as she hides from the truth. Rather than telling the real story behind her visit, Blanche, who is a high-school teacher, explains that she was visiting in the middle of the semester because the high school superintendent, Mr. Graves suggested I take a leave of absence (1801). Wishing to divert attention away from herself, Blanche starts attacking Stella, accusing her of leaving her while she struggled to keep the plantation together. Finally, Blanche manages to make Stella feel guilty. She shrieks, I stayed at Belle Reve and tried to hold it together!... You just came home in time for the funerals, Stella. And funerals are pretty compared to deaths... And now you sit there telling me with your eyes that I let the place go!... Yes, accuse me! Sit there and stare at me, thinking I let the place go! I let the place go? Where were you? In bed with your -- Polack! (180-1804)
Blanches negative attitudes become increasingly apparent, but her cruelty, especially towards her sister, makes it difficult to feel sympathy for her suffering. When Blanche (whose own marital history is both dirty and tragic) becomes critical of Stellas marriage to Stanley, Stella finally questions her sisters superior attitude. Blanche responds, I am not being or feeling at all superior, Stella. Believe me Im not! Its just this. This is how I look at it. A man like that is someone to go out with -- once -- twice -- three times when the devil is in you. But live with? Have a child by? (185). This reveals much about Blanches true nature. She is, spiritually, a sexual predator who would go out (and to bed) with a man like Stanley Kowalski, but would never consider marrying him because she must keep the outward appearance of being a cultured Southern lady. Blanche uses her most verbal assaults for Stanley, whom she considers a Neanderthal with no social value. While Stanley leers at her, Blanche sneers, He acts like an animal, has an animals habits!... Theres even something -- sub-human -- something not quite to the stage of humanity yet!... Stanley Kowalski -- survivor of the Stone Age! Bearing the raw meat home from the kill in the jungle! And you -- you here -- waiting for him! Maybe hell strike you or maybe grunt and kiss you! That is, if kisses have been discovered yet! Night falls and the other apes gather! (185). While condemning Stanley, Blanche is describing herself indirectly in a mysterious way. She is a sexual creature who enjoys young animals, perhaps because that is when their defenses are down. Blanche DuBois has not left her job to take a rest. She had been caught with a seventeen-year-old student, and the boys father had threatened the school with legal action. When visiting Stella and Stanley, Blanches dangerous desires again arise, while waiting for her respectable middle-aged suitor, Mitch, to call. She never shows her face to him. Mitch falls in love with her, believing her to be pure and innocent. Throughout their courtship, she plays her role perfectly. She even tells him that she is not easy like many girls. However, She shows her real face in front of the newspaper delivery boy, attempting to seduce the child with dialogue she probably had read in a cheap romance novel Has anyone ever told you that you look like a young Prince out of Arabian Nights?... Come here. I want to kiss you, just once, softly and sweetly on your mouth!... Now run along, quickly! It would be nice to keep you, but Ive got to be good -- and keep my hands off children (181). This woman is definitely not someone parents would want to hire as their baby sitter.
Blanche DuBois is very much the female counterpart of Stanley Kowalski. Stanley is a large and loud man who loves to exert physical dominance over women. He can get away with mistreating Stella during the day and she will forgive him anything because of his sexual prowess at night. He is rude, with the manners of a pig. Stanley is the king of his domain just as Blanche once was a Queen in Belle Reve. When he has her past investigated, Blanches lies collapse like a house of cards. Stanleys cruel investigation of his sister-in-law is a really important achievement, as the two fight to dominate the other. While Stella is giving birth to Stanleys child, Stanley emerges with Blanche, stripping her of all that is left of her pathetic fantasy. She knew what would happen. Does that mean we are to be alone in here? She asks (1850). The issue of rape is confused because of Blanches previous attraction for Stanley as well as her dark and dirty past. Williams was aware that many readers do not sympathize with the victim. It is easy to condemn women for their loose behavior and claim that female victims of rape bring sexual violence upon themselves.
There can be no doubt that Blanche DuBois is an emotionally unstable woman. But is this instability brought on by others or by herself? She is a liar and a hypocrite, who judges people by value standards she can not maintain herself. Blanche is a selfish woman who can control people and situations to appear as she wants them to, not as they truly are. Blanches fate is a punishment for a fallen woman. She is a human with multiple personalities, a woman who wants beauty and to see the sunset from her plantation porch, but is, at the same time, consumed by a passion for immorality and darkness. Because she has destroyed her relationships with the people closest to her, she is forced to depend on the kindness of strangers (1860). In the final analysis, Blanche DuBois is a character who inspires more contempt than sympathy, for the tragic consequences from which resulted her actions and imagination.

The workplace is often a place where romances develop. Office relationships have been an issue since men and women began working side by side. Many men and women do not have time to meet a potential romantic partner outside of the office because of their long work hours. Consequently, a romantic relationship with a co-worker can be especially tempting for those who spend many hours at their job. After all, who do co-workers share common interests? Who do they see face-to-face, day in and day out for months and even years on end? They see each other. They confide in one another. Co-workers many times share secrets, dreams, and personal problems. They rely on each other for support, in their both job and personal lives. It is no wonder that there are so many office relationships occurring in the workplace today, due to long hours and the rise of women in the workplace.
There are many reasons why office relationships occur. One reason is the increased number of women in the work place. It is difficult for a traditional family to live on the salary of only one spouse so more women have joined the labor force, which means male and female co-workers come into closer contact than ever before. Women will account for 5% of total labor force growth between 16 and 006, according to the Washington-based National Council of Womens Organizations (Armour). Martin and Bart Siegel of The Sierra Times initiated a study, which concluded that the percentage of adult women who work increased from 6 percent in 140 to 60 percent in 17. Moreover, in the 10s, more than 70 percent of women between the ages of twenty and fifty-four have been in the labor force.
A traditional work environment takes up more hours in a day; therefore, we have less free time to meet those of the opposite sex outside of work. The workplace is now the most likely place for Americans to meet a romantic partner. This is because of the ever-increasing number of women in the labor force and longer hours worked by most employees (Schmidt). Many traditional corporations are following a team concept, which requires frequent and close interactions with, usually, well-educated, well-dressed members of the opposite sex. Late meetings and social events that are required from a career may also instigate romance (Bambino). Working long hours makes it hard for employees to meet someone outside of work, so why not look in the next cubical?
Office relationships often have positive aspects. Some companies regard office romances as a positive development because when the couple marries they tend to stay with the company, which reduces high turnover. In numerous surveys on the subject, anywhere from one-third to one-half of all romances now start at work. Almost half of all these office romances result in marriage one in four people will actually meet their life partner at work (Cooper). After all, employees spend at least 40 hours a week at work, surrounded with individuals of similar backgrounds and interests.
Another positive aspect of an office relationship is that romantic workplace partners can often offer support to one another because each know and understand the common stresses of the surrounding environment. Each know what the boss’ personality is like and how easily offended an individual co-worker may become. A romantic partner will understand what it feels like to have a stressful day at the office and will probably be more able to offer support since both partners share an understanding of the workplace.
Some participants of workplace romance were observed to be more productive, easier to get along with, enjoyed being at the office more, and experienced less tension (Hartel). This romantic energy often results in employees bringing enthusiasm and energy to the workplace, which initiates the increased productivity, improved motivation, and more complete job satisfaction. Couples may show a burst of enthusiasm, fro having their work as a shared interest, by coming to work earlier and showing more productive work habits since they are enjoying themselves in a work romance.
Office romances can pose high risks to organizations. Some of the potential risks that concern employers are the effect on productivity, effect on morale, conflicts of interest, violations of confidentiality, and sexual harassment (Bambino). Sexual harassment claims are at the top of the list of risks most feared by organizations. The Society of Human Resource Management’s 18 survey of more than 600 human resource professionals showed that 88% of respondents from organizations that discourage or do not permit office romances feared the possibility of sexual harassment claims (Olian).
In 18, U.S. Supreme Court rulings imposed strict liability against an employer if a supervisor engaged in quid pro quo harassment, which is unwelcomed sexual advances or requests as a condition for getting or keeping a job as well as a basis for promotions, bonuses or raises (Cornell). These rulings define the employer’s liability for sexual favoritism in the workplace, which violates Section 70 of Title VII (EEOC). According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, this policy states that
The Commission and the courts have declared that sexual harassment violates Section 70 of Title VII. Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson, 477 U.S. 57, 64, 40 EPD 1,15 (186); EEOCs Guidelines on Discrimination Because of Sex, C.F.R. § 1604.11(a). EEOCs Guidelines define two kinds of sexual harassment quid pro quo, in which submission to or rejection of [unwelcome sexual] conduct by an individual is used as the basis for employment decisions affecting such individual, and hostile environment, in which unwelcome sexual conduct unreasonably interfer[es] with an individuals job performance or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive working environment.
The risk exposure for sexual harassment increases when the relationship ends between a supervisor and a subordinate. A jilted supervisor might cause workplace difficulties by vindictive or retaliatory actions such as making working conditions unbearable for the subordinate, or worse, terminating the subordinate’s job. If this happens, the employer is liable whether the employer knew about it or not. “No employer wants to spend the money to defend these claims, especially when the company has no idea who is telling the truth. (Cornell)”
Violations in confidentiality pose risks to organizations when a person who is in a position of trust with the company’s internal affairs, shares this information with a romantic partner (Bambino). This information, whether passed on internally or externally could have disastrous outcomes, legally and ethically, in instances where there is a breach of confidentiality that directly affects an individual or the entire organization. For example, an employee who is in a position of trust has a romantic relationship with a client. The employee discusses confidential company business with the client who then passes this information on to a friend or coworker. The friend or coworker of the client is working for a legal firm that is suing the employee’s company. It turns out that this information is crucial to winning a lawsuit against the trusted employee’s company. A confidentiality breach of this type could end up costing a company much more than legal fees. In the worst case, it could put the company out of business.
Romantic relationships between supervisors and subordinates may result in undue favoritism. Joel Hoekstra states in an article for techies.com, “A personal relationship between a supervisor and subordinate can shift the balance of power. Coworkers may perceive favoritism, even if there isn’t any. And if the relationship dissolves, the subordinate may claim some form of sexual harassment, saying they’ve been denied raises or the opportunity to advance.”
When the romantic drama plays out in the workplace, employee morale may plummet and productivity may be negatively affected if the relationship involves a supervisor and subordinate in the same department. This may or may not be perceived in the workplace as an abuse of power. Robert Bambino states in his article that “Despite the couple’s best of intentions to remain objective, conflicts can occur when work-related decisions are no longer made for good, sound reasons but instead are based on partiality and personal feelings”. Bambino also states that “Overall work performance may suffer because the couple is distracted from work. Resentful co-workers […] may devote excessive time gossiping about, or plotting against the pair.”
Marital infidelity has become a top issue where office romances are concerned. Rob Moll states in his article that “Studies published in the American Sociological Review and the Journal of Marriage and Family show that before 185, divorce rates were equal among working and homemaking women; however between 185 and 1, the annual probability of divorce among employed wives exceeded that for nonemployed wives by 40 percent.” Moll goes on to say, “Today’s workplace has become the No. 1 spot for married individuals to meet affair partners.” According to Moll, some of the reasons for this are group interaction in coed workplaces, frequent travel and long hours, all of which create more opportunity and temptation than ever. Dr. Shirley Glass states “Men and women who work closely together under stressful conditions can quickly become attracted to each other. They often share interests and think nothing of spending time over coffee or lunch getting to know one another.” (qtd. in Moll).
Managing workplace romances are somewhat difficult. “Survey results indicate that 1 percent of employers had a written policy to address workplace romances, but 14 percent claimed that they had a clear understanding of expected behaviors despite the absence of written policy. A majority (7 percent) did not have a written policy. According to the survey, among companies that have a written or unwritten understanding of workplace romance policy, 55 percent permit but discourage workplace romances, percent have no restrictions on the romance, and 7 percent say that intimate friendships among workplace colleagues are not permitted (Olian). Some of them have a consensual relationship agreement or “ Love Contract” in their Human Resources policies. Ignoring workplace relationships can be very costly. After a consensual relationship ends in the workplace, sexual harassment suits are a major concern for the Employer. The jilted employee can claim that he or she was forced into a relationship with their supervisor. This could lead to financial losses and court actions. The courts have denied claims to cases related to workplace romance. Employers do not want to be romance police, but the costs can be overwhelming. Even without sexual harassment suits, work proficiency of the people involved declines. This can create trouble in the company. Many employers have consequences for violation of policies in place. Transferring one of the people involved, is one way to stop any interference in the workplace. Some employers are even terminating employees that are involved.
The military has a policy about officers and enlisted people relationships. One officer, who was romantically involved with an enlisted person was court-martialed and sent to prison. In order to get married in the military you must first get permission. But officers and enlisted can never cross that line without severe punishment.
There are positives and negatives to workplace romances. There are many different opinions, and everyone must make his or her own in the long run. The research shows a few benefits in workplace romances. The employees involved tend to stay with the employer longer. Most employers like the long-term employees. They become more company oriented and happy in their work environment.
There seems to be many negative aspects for some companies. This leads to lawsuits and expenses. The supervisor/subordinate relationship can sometimes end up in a courtroom battle defending a sexual harassment suit. This has lead to contract agreements called “Love Contracts”. This contract gives the employer release from any lawsuit created by these relationships.
Some workplaces have a “no tolerance” system. The military is a prime example of this. Prison sentences have been handed out for infringement of this policy.

The “unexplainable” is not really impossible to explain; the knowledge needed to explain it has not been acquired. People explain things in terms of science, theory, religion, and just making things up.
People have been coming up with theories and stories for things they couldn’t explain or understand since the beginning of time. Early in time the things people couldn’t explain the reasoning, they would say its god’s doing. Religion and magic were more real than science to many people up until the Renaissance period when many people opened their minds to new ideas. The explanation before Darwin’s Evolution theory for the creation of the human being and universe was creationism. Creationism was a belief developed by the church, which stated that god created everything in the universe. Before modern medicine for a sickness doctor would slice the vein of their patient, because they thought that sicknesses was caused by bad blood. Instead of getting better the patient would often get sicker from the loss of blood. Now we know that germs and viruses cause sicknesses. Many of these theories that we believe today are backed by experimental and scientific proof.
Science has and will continue to explain the “unexplainable”. The world is round, but before Magellan’s vessels sailed the circumference of the earth people believed it was flat and that you could fall off the edge. Another “unexplainable” of early history was that the earth was the center of the universe. This belief was also the work of the church. Science proved this to be wrong and that in fact the Earth revolves around the sun. Galileo and Copernicus were the one that proved it and developed the heliocentric model of the solar system. Before James Joule’s studies showed that heat was a product of molecule movement, before that people believed that a microscopic bug called a “caloric” transferred heat. Today it is common knowledge that heat is caused my molecule movement. Many of the scientific facts are backed by experimental proof.
Science and theories are ways to explain the “unexplainable”. Anyone can offer an explanation that may or may not be based on truth or reality. As long as people are developing and using theories and science they are explaining the “unexplainable”.

Positive Thinking
Here are three benefits of positive thinking. The first benefit of positive thinking is that if you think positive thoughts while you are working and have positive thoughts about you’re job, you will be much happier and have a much better time while at work. Another benefit of thinking positive is that the customers will be much happier, and will want to come back and spend more money at your store. The third benefit of thinking positive is the fact that since all of the customers are happy and the extra money coming in will make your supervisor much happier.
One way to develop a positive attitude is to make work more fun, try to find something that will make you excited to come back to work, and not depressed when you have to go to work. Another way to develop a positive attitude is to get to know your coworkers and supervisors, find out what there job is like and maybe you will be able to better understand their point of view and help them out if you can. The final way to develop a positive attitude is to just try and smile once and a while, you should be happy to be at work, if you don’t like you’re job then you shouldn’t work there. Well I cannot think of anything else to write about so I am just typing in this crap for now. I just needed a few more words so this is what I did.

Companies outsource various functions for all kinds of reasons. The most common ones, according to the, are to reduce and control operating costs, to improve company focus, to gain access to world-class capabilities and to free internal resources for other purposes, in that order.
Mainly, outsourcing is evolving into a visionary tool for change and this change is having an impact on the types of services involved, suggests Dr. James Brian Quinn that the big shift in this area has been to intellectually based service activities, such as research, product development, logistics, human relations, accounting, legal work, and marketing and market research.
A Professor, who has been studying innovation for more than 40 years and wrote some of the first articles on core competencies and strategic outsourcing, asserts that if an enterprise does not excel in an area yet continues to do it in-house, it gives up an important competitive edge
A chief analyst at Stamford states that the outsourcing market has been shifting gradually from a cost focus to a business focus, and that a new emphasis on access and speed to market has been visible. The focus now is on business outcomes, not just infrastructure. This is about taking advantage of relationship types and models, and a variety of contracting modes and structures. It is very complex.
Another factor contributing to that complexity is the truly collaborative nature of these agreements. For it being effective, a transformational outsourcing deal requires that each partner have a considerable stake in the game, and often that means sharing both risk and reward. To make that work, the deal must fund the necessary investment at the best possible cost of capital and simultaneously motivate the outsourcing partners commitment by aligning goals.
As might be expected, outsourcing at this level raises a number of challenges, particularly in the areas of management and measuring results.

If we have to make a distinction between an MBA program today with that of five or ten years ago, the two most obvious answers would be critical thinking and team-working emphasis. And it come as no surprise to see that Schulich MBA program has given a special attention to these almost indispensable requirement in today’s business environment.
The team, I was appointed at the beginning of the first year of MBA, is composed of eight members, every one coming from a different professional experience, as well as various living and working environments. Four of them are international student coming from three different countries, which of them with their own cultures and languages. As the teams was organized by the faculty beforehand, we understood that this would be the team we were supposed to work together, and we had no choice about it but to find the way to get the best out of this team, and to accomplish our common goals. Thought everyone might had different expectation, the common goal was clear striving to work effectively in order to achieve the possible grades and skills needed in the business world. At that point everyone seemed enthusiastic and committed, nevertheless, it was apparent to everyone that coordinating, organizing and making a very diverse team successful was a challenge.

A Managerial Assessment Utilizing Panacucci’s Critical Dozen Administrative Qualities
Business in a Global Society
Professor Richard Panaccuci
Dan Goonin
December nd
For this assignment, the person I will be analyzing will be Bob Goonin. He is the Director/Founder of Step Up to Soccer a program which is designed to teach young children the basics of the game of soccer. I was a coach for this program in the summers of the last years of my life. Bob went to Brown University for two years of college before dropping out. He is my father, and also my boss during the summer. I have known him all my life and worked for him for summers.
1) Knowledge- A- (.67)
He gets an A- in the area because he has a vast knowledge of the field, he has ran this program for 11 summers, and has grown it from an idea to entertain me and my friends when we were young to a business serving over 50 daycare centers and over 000 children. He has worked hard to become knowledgeable in this field, researching and doing actually coaching to expand his knowledge. The reason he did not get an A was because he has never played soccer seriously himself and lacks some of the technical skills, but he gets around this problem by hiring coaches like me ho have played their entire lives and sending us into the field.
) Standards- A (4.0)
He doesn’t lack anything in this area, he is very clear about what is expected of a coach, and he has a set curriculum and although he doesn’t expect us to run our classes directly from the book it gives us a very clear idea of the type of stuff we should be doing. Before he hires a coach he goes over all the expectations and demands of the job ahead of time so the coach knows what he/she knows what they are getting into. This is an effective way of ensuring that the coach will enjoy the job and that they are right for it.
) Communications- B+ (.)
This is a little hard for me to judge because I live with him so I learn more about the inner workings of the company than most coaches. I believe from what I have seen with other coaches that he informs them about everything and anything that is pertinent to their job, but sometimes they do not seem to be informed about the overall situation.
4) Recognition- A (4.0)
This is an area in which Bob excels. Since he is not in the field with them and cannot see them in action, he has set up a great way of recognizing good work. At the end of each season, he sends in review forms for the daycare center to fill out. On this form is a review of himself as an administrator and of the coaches. Since most coaches work with or 4 centers, they have about 15 sets of rankings. Technical, how they are with kids, communication and interaction with the center and the parents, and timeliness. The coach will get reviewed in all 4 areas, and they get a rating between 1 and 5, with 1 being low and 5 being high. If the coach averages a 4 or better, they get a dollar bonus per class they taught that summer. In my case I averaged above a 4 and I had taught about 10 classes that summer so I got a 40 dollar bonus. This is a great way to get his coaches to work hard.
5) Empathy- A- (.67)
Bob is very good at understanding where his coaches are coming from. If a coach is feeling ill or has a serious commitment he/she must attend. He will not however, let it happen on a regular basis. He understands if it happens, but he excepts that it will not be a common occurrence. If a coach is absent from work on a regular basis, then penalties including possibly being fired will occur. The reason I didn’t give him an A is because in some situations I tend to think he is to trusting.
6) Consultative- A (4.0)
He has a system in place to get input from his coaches. At the end of the season, he gives the coaches a chance to review him as an administrator. He also gives them a spot where they can give any input for the curriculum as far as new drills or games to play with the kids, and also a spot for their input on the program in general and ways they think it can be improved. He takes the comments seriously, and it is not uncommon for a coach to suggest a game or drill and then find it in the curriculum then next year. He is not lacking in any way in this category.
7) Visibility Access- B- (.67)
The reason I gave him a low grade on this quality, was because he runs the program through a lot of email and phone calls. I give him more credit than his grade shows however, because in many cases there is a great distance between him and the coaches. It is also not a situation where it is necessary to see him everyday. He is however in constant communication through other forms with his coaches. He is almost always reachable if there is a problem. He does a good job being around whenever he is needed, but he doesn’t have face to face contact with his coaches everyday.
8) Follow Through- A (4.0)
I feel that whenever Bob says he will do something he follows through. I can’t remember a situation where he said he would do something and than didn’t follow through. He is good at not promising things he cannot do, and doing what he says he will. He is very reliable in almost all cases.
) Team Dynamics- B (.0)
He gets a B because he expects the best from himself and from his coaches, he knows that you win customers over by working hard and being attentive to their needs and he expects that from himself and his coaches. He didn’t get a higher grade because he doesn’t boast about the program and make the coaches feel like they are a part of something great, which in my opinion sometimes encourages letdowns. I believe if he worked a little harder to make coaches believe it is unacceptable not to be the best, then he would have less problems with coaches letting him down.
10) Consistency- A- (.67)
In almost all cases he is consistent and doesn’t show favoritism. He got an A- because he expects coaches to do their job, and when they do well, he rewards them, but if they don’t live up to his expectations, he will discipline them. The reason he didn’t get an A, is actually because of me. Usually he will not hire anyone that is has not yet graduated high school. Because I happen to be his son I had an advantage and when a coach quit mid season I was allowed to take over his classes. This was as a junior in high school. As a senior I had a full schedule and was a regular employee. The reason this didn’t hurt his grade more was because I proved to be a very reliable coach and got good reviews from all the centers I worked with.
11) Loyalty- B (.0)
He got a B in this category because if a center has a bad director or tough children to deal with he understands and will help as much as he can from an administrative standpoint. I didn’t give him a higher grade because in some situations there is not a lot he can do from his position. He will do all he can, but a coach will have to deal with tough kids and tough daycare center directors if feels like it is doable.
1) Connected to the Top- A (4.0)
This is a given A because not only is he coaches direct boss, it is a small business so he is the man at the top. If a coach has a problem or a suggestion they can give it to him and he does not have to ask anyone else, just himself. He has an advantage in this category because he runs a small business, it might be a different story if there was more employees in the business.
Bob Goonin’s overall average for this paper was a .58. This is about an A-.I believe this is a pretty accurate assessment of him as an administrator. He is overall a very good boss to work for, he is lacking in a few areas, but not many. I would love to work for bosses like him at all my jobs if I could. I have had multiple other jobs, and have seen both good and bad bosses, and all in all he ranks among the best I have worked for yet.
Categories I would need to work on to be a good administrator...
1) Recognition-
Sometimes I think I get to caught up in what I am doing or busy with that I forget that others are working as hard as I am. To improve upon this I would have to take time out of my days to make sure my employees were doing there job and reward the ones who are going above and beyond the necessary.
) Consultative-
This might be a problem because sometimes I am slightly thick headed, and if I think something is right than I will live and die by my opinions. This might hurt me because I might miss out on important information my employees might be able to give me. To work on this, I would have to accept that I can’t always be right and take advice from others. This doesn’t mean I would have to do what they say, I would have to make those decisions myself, but it would help to have input from others.
) Follow Through-
Sometimes I have a tendency to not follow through. This is because I get distracted, and get very involved in whatever is on my mind. This could be a problem because I can seem unreliable at times. It also might hurt me in the way that things might not get done when they need to get done. The way I could improve this would be to be more originized, and to try to focus more on what needs to get done.

University Days
University politics are the most vicious politics of allbecause the stakes are so low.-- Anonymous, sometimes falsely attributed to Henry Kissinger
October 11, 00
Im sure some of you have read James Thurbers1 essay University Days, a reminiscence of his years attending Ohio State University in the early part of the twentieth century. Thurber humorously relates the difficulties his extreme myopia caused him when he tried to use a microscope in biology class, how he and his fellow students did everything possible to help the dim-witted star fullback stay academically eligible for the big game against Illinois, and how he accidentally was the only ROTC cadet who performed the correct maneuver during a parade. If Thurber and his classmates never achieved academic superstardom, at least their time in college seemed to have been beneficial. At least a college education back then never seemed to do anyone any lasting damage, given that most professors in those halcyon days adhered to the Hippocratic dictum Do no harm. It all seemed sohow does one put it?wholesome. As I write this, Im having coffee at my favorite restaurant in Munich, the News Bar on the corner of Schellingstrasse and Amalienstrasse. Its located on the campus of Ludwig Maximilian University, an area full of good cafes, excellent bookstores and very attractive girls. A couple of blocks away on 50 Schellingstrasse is the site of the Nazi Party during the early 10s. Further down the street on 6 Schellingstrasse is the site of Osteria Bavaria (now Osteria Italiana), Adolf Hitlers favorite restaurant. What do these facts have to do with one another? Well, its not discussed much in the historical literature, but Nazism was largely the product of academia. To be sure, virulent anti-Semitism and dreams of world conquest have roots that extend far beyond the hallowed halls of ivy; but the systematic amalgamation of anti-Semitism, theories of the superiority of the German people, and the geopolitical movement to acquire Lebensraum was a product of the university, specifically Ludwig Maximilian University. Adolf Hitler, Hermann Goering and Rudolf Hess all took classes at LMU after World War I. Indeed, Hess was working on a graduate degree under the supervision of Professor Karl Haushofer, the chief architect of the concept of Lebensraum. The LMU student body was overwhelmingly pro-Nazi. LMU Student Body President Baldur von Schirach later became head of the Hitler Youth and subsequently was one of the Nuremberg Trial defendants who received a prison sentence for his crimes. And let us not forget that Joseph Goebbels received his doctorate in literature from the University of Heidelberg. My point is not to single out German academics for any special opprobrium. They were simply doing what their colleagues at Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and any number of universities throughout the English-speaking world were doing at the same time (and in many cases continue to do), namely, using the academic freedom and social prestige of the university to support a totalitarian vision of the future, one that would ultimately eliminate the universitys freedom and prestige if it ever came into power. In Germany the academics worshipped Hitler; in America and Britain they worshipped Stalin; and in America they still worship the ghost of Stalin. The idyll of Thurbers youth is a lost paradise of the imagination, existing today only in the pages of novels by Henry James and R. F. Delderfield. Thurbers parents sent him to college with the assurance that even if he didnt learn all that much, he would probably pick up some knowledge and perhaps a few social skills that would serve him in good stead for the rest of his life. After Thurbers time, parents sent their children off to college in what is essentially an academic crapshoot, hoping against hope that their offspring wouldnt get too damaged along the way as they picked up the sheepskin that statistics told us would ensure 5.7% more lifetime earning power over those poor souls who only managed to matriculate from high school. What went wrong? Why did universities in the 0th century abandon the search for truth in favor of the deliberate ideological distortion of truth? Why did universities reject the noble calling of being the repositories of knowledge in favor of becoming factories for the fabrication of falsehoods? And ultimately, why did universities reject freedom in favor of slavery and oppression? There are a number of reasons why Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Fidel, Che, Ho Chi Minh and Pol Pot have been the darlings of academia instead of Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Locke, Montesquieu and Cicero. Freedom, especially the American variety, is rooted in the natural law and in a respect for the lessons of history. Americans believe that humans are endowed with inalienable rights because we are born human, that is, with some of the divine spark of the Creator. And the form of this freedom is governed by centuries of human history that instruct us on the hows and whys of organizing a just and free society.Academics, on the other hand, are consumed with abstract plans that have no relationship to human experience. Undeterred by the failures of all totalitarian systems and regimes, academics continue to adhere to failed systems of tyranny because they are systems, and if the system is duly organized and its implementation is executed correctly, logic tells them that such systems should work. Failure, then, does not represent failure of the idea, only the failure to realize the implementation of the idea. For the academic Left (there is, in reality, no academic Right) will always believe in the essential perfection of communism regardless of how far the economy of Cuba collapses. It will always be America and capitalism, not Cuban Marxism, that the academics will blame for the failure of Castro to create Heaven on Earth in Havana.Another reason for the embracing of totalitarianism by academics is the desire for power. There is a fine line between wanting to instruct and wanting to control. Power is gained in academia by getting students to adhere rigorously to the ideas of their professors. In academia, knowledge is not so much discovered or created as it is cloned.Additionally, academics have embraced totalitarianism because of feelings of inadequacy, irrelevance and jealousy. Imagine the poor academic literary critic. The books he writes are read but by a few fellow academic critics. Yet the books he criticizes may sell in the millions. He feels he has no voice, no status in society next to the truly creative artist. The answer to the critics dilemma is, then, to eliminate the creative artist from the creative product. In such a scenario, only the critics voice breathes life into the work. Lacking the courage of his convictions, the critic decides that its too dangerous to actually engage in revolutionary action. Better to show his students that Moby Dick is a vehicle whereby white male oppressors of European descent (are there any other kind?) subjugate women, people of color and whatever minority constitutes the latest oppressed group du jour. Filled with revolutionary indignation, the students can then go out and remake the world while their academic mentors shuffle off into retirement and senility. And finally, there is another reason for the decline of the university. It is not talked about much, but its impact is profound. The decline of the universityindeed, the collapse of the entire educational system in the Western worldhas been aided, abetted and exacerbated by perhaps the most ignorant, anti-intellectual and loathsome collection of individuals in the history of mankinduniversity administrators. In Thurbers day, university presidents and deans considered themselves to be scholars. And generally they were outstanding scholars who had made some real contribution to the pursuit of knowledge. They had a love and respect for learning. There may have been a bit of the fustiness of the school marm about them, but they viewed their lifes work as something noble, something to be cherished because it was intrinsically good. And they were dedicated to the truth.Todays university administrators are money-grubbing whores, although I must apologize to both grubs and whores for comparing them to university administrators. The university has become a harlot, ready to lie, cheat, steal and spread her legs for whoever has the most money. Truth be damned, lets be trendy because that will generate a lot of publicity and notoriety. What? … Surveys show that incoming freshmen dont like grammar? … Well, then, well just ban the teaching of grammar. For you see, the university is no longer composed of scholars and students. It now has only facilitators and customers. You know, just like a crack house. The solution? There is no solution, and as James Burnham once said so famously, If theres no solution, theres no problem. Reform of the university is no longer possible. We need to start thinking of what will replace the university as it drifts off into meaninglessness like the academic enclave of Castalia in Hermann Hesses Glass Bead Game. But as for me, Im going to go ahead and keep reading the classics of Western literature; Im going to continue listening to Beethoven and Stravinsky; and Im not going to pay any attention to the tenured cretins of academia who say that Western civilization is an oppressive force. But as we continue to prosecute the War on Terror, perhaps a few smart bombs should be saved for those smart folks who make up the academic fifth column of terrorism.1. Creating a graphic is very similar to expressing yourself to someone or writing. It is a very complicated process. When I make graphics, I can usually look back at it later and tell what type of mood I was in when I created it. I have millions of images on my computer, some are black, others, are bright. My graphics vary depending on what conversations Ive had that day or sometimes even what Ive eaten.
You must first think of something in particular that happened that day or maybe even that week. Here, you must take that feeling to the screen. Sometimes by the time I finish, it actually has nothing to do with what I originally thought about. It is a must to choose a topic for your graphic creation. You see, a graphic actually has a story in it. Not everyone can see it, but the creator can. In fact, graphics can be related to just about any type of literature. An entire website, for example, must have a theme, just like a story or epic. Everything must fit together just right to make it look good or go where it needs to be.
Secondly, you need to think of what the ending graphic might possibly look like. Will it be happy or bright? Will it be scary or intriguing? One thing that you most certainly want your graphic to do is catch your audience’s attention quickly. Much like a lame character in a story sets what type of mood the scene is, your graphic will set how your audience will interpret your site. In other words, if you are making a florist’s site, you don’t want to have a black graphic, you want it to be as vibrant as the flowers they sell.
After all that, you finally get to choose the tools that you will use. You must be familiar with the program that you are using. There are an unlimited number of choices to choose from when selecting a program to use such as Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Fireworks, and JASC Print Shop Pro. For example, I use Photoshop to make my graphics and I am still learning many of the options, but I now have the basic idea of most of them. If you feel dreary this day, you may want to choose dark colors or possible pale colors. Simply create a box or whatever comes to your mind first. In Photoshop, I would choose the square tool and simply click on the screen and drag my mouse pointer to make exactly what size box I would want. Then, I might go to filter, choose the option blur, then select Gaussian blur. Now a pop-up screen will appear allowing me to choose exactly how much I want to blur the object. Blurring the object will give it a sort of sad look if you choose the colors correctly. It will also add a faded look to the object so that it doesn’t stand out from the page quite as much. This is similar to going inside your head and selecting what type of mood you would like a particular character in your story to have.
Continue to make other shapes until you are happy with what you have come up with. Just as a writer will go into detail until he feels he has fully described the scene, you must go into detail until your graphic is fully illustrated. After it’s all said and done, does your graphic look anything like you thought? Maybe it looks happy but you thought it would be sad. If it is not what you thought, somewhere down the line, you started to think of something that threw you off the original subject. It happens to me all the time. Congratulations on your first interpretation of a graphic!
