From An Elaborate Exaggeration To A Natural Integration

Arguing Against the Decision of the Plessy Court

“It is one thing for railroad carriers to furnish, or to be required by law to furnish, equal accommodations for all whom they are under a legal duty to carry. It is quite another thing for government to forbid citizens of the white and black races from traveling in the same public conveyance, and to punish officers of railroad companies for permitting persons of the two races to occupy the same passenger coach. If a state can prescribe, as a rule of civil conduct, that whites and blacks shall not travel as passengers in the same railroad coach, why may it not so regulate the use of the streets of its cities and towns as to compel white citizens to keep on one side of a street, and black citizens to keep on the other? Why may it not, upon like grounds, punish whites and blacks that ride together in streetcars or in open vehicles on a public road or street? Why may it not require sheriffs to assign whites to one side of a courtroom, and blacks to the other? And why may it not also prohibit the commingling of the two races in the galleries of legislative halls or in public assemblages convened for the consideration of the political questions of the day? Further, if this statute of Louisiana is consistent with the personal liberty of citizens, why may not the state require the separation in railroad coaches of native and naturalized citizens of the United States, or of Protestants and Roman Catholics?”

This passage of Justice Harlan’s dissent in the Plessy vs. Ferguson case contains an argument against the majority decision of the Supreme Court to uphold separate accommodations for blacks and whites. While Harlan is correct in disagreeing with the decision, he does not make a very good argument. He attempts to create a logical flow between several different situations in which blacks and whites could have the same accommodations, but fails miserably. He also attempts to appeal to the emotions of the court, but exaggerates so much that he fails in this way as well. A better strategy for Harlan would have been to describe how blacks and whites naturally want to have equal accommodations and to commingle in every area of society.

Harlan’s argument is structured around the idea that blacks and whites should be equal before the law and that segregation in railroad cars ascribes inferiority to blacks. This premise is not explicitly stated; he does not come out and say that blacks and whites should be equal. He begins his argument with the decision of the court to uphold the law then lists several possible segregations, that he believes come as natural proceeding steps after the decision, with a rhetorical tone that implies outrage at the notion of blacks being inferior to whites. He sets up a situation and attempts to work through a logical progression in order to arrive at his conclusion. But along the way he becomes illogical. For example, he states that “If a state can prescribe, as a rule of civil conduct, that whites and blacks shall not travel as passengers in the same railroad coach, why may it not so regulate the use of the streets of its cities and towns as to compel white citizens to keep on one side of a street, and black citizens to keep on the other?” This sentence shows that he can begin with one situation, whites and blacks traveling in a train, and illogically jump to a separate situation, whites and blacks walking along the street, without using appropriate intermediate claims to transition between the two.

Harlan’s rhetorical tone not only fails to make a logical argument by incorrectly using logos, but also fails to make an emotional argument by misusing pathos. Appealing to the emotions of a targeted audience can be an effective rhetorical strategy when used well, but Harlan is guilty of a logical fallacy by over appealing to emotion, which encourages skepticism. This is evident in his intermediate claims in which he lists several scenarios where blacks would be unequal to whites. For instance, he interprets the law to provide a possibility for sheriffs to “assign whites to one side of a courtroom, and blacks to the other” and for the races to be prohibited from commingling in all areas of life. He describes these scenarios in a progressively drastic manner, ending the passage with a reference to religious discrimination. This portion of his argument is weak. First of all, he provides so many different scenarios that he is clearly exaggerating. Also, in the last line of the quoted passage he goes from describing racial discrimination to discussing the possibility of religious discrimination. By taking such a detour from the issue at hand he is missing the point. This fallacy is evident in the exaggerated way he starts off attacking racism then concludes by attacking a totally different type of discrimination. He commits another fallacy by saying that either the races should not be segregated at all, or they will be segregated always. Certainly there could be some situations where they could be discriminated and somewhere they could not be. He is wrong in asserting that segregation is an all or nothing principle because it may be more prevalent on trains, but not as rampant in courthouses or on street corners. While these fallacies are prominent in Harlan’s argument, there are some portions of his dissent that are very strong.

A major strength in Harlan’s argument is his inclusion of figures such as the sheriff who must force the races to separate. The presence of the sheriff who has the power to “assign whites to one side of a courtroom, and blacks to the other” shows how Harlan believed that blacks and whites want to exist together and would have to be forced to separate. It is discriminatory to prevent blacks and whites from riding together; the two races should be allowed to commingle because they naturally desire to. If this were not true then sheriffs and others would not be needed to force blacks and whites apart, they would naturally separate. Furthermore, blacks and whites not only want to commingle, they want be equal under the law and have equal accommodations. If this were not true then Homer Plessy and other blacks would not have challenged the law keeping them segregated on trains. Also, blacks and whites need to be equally integrated because they can work together to improve society. Plato believed that society arose as a way for people to have their needs met by others. Blacks and whites can work together to invent new things and make the culture more diverse.

Although, it could be said that blacks and whites do not have a natural desire to integrate due to the animosity whites feel towards blacks, especially in the South where groups like the KKK sometimes violently oppose the mere existence of black people. This attitude arose out of a necessity for some whites to dominate their black slaves in order to keep the slaves working and to prevent insurrection. This mindset existed for so long that eventually white slave owners began to truly hate blacks. But the whites needed the blacks to work as slaves on their plantations in order to increase crop yields and keep the whites from working too extensively. This domination of blacks only came about when some people decided that black prisoners could be used as slaves. It did not exist throughout the thousands of years prior to the 1th century. Therefore, blacks and whites do, indeed, want to be equal; some whites resist only because they inherit it from an attitude of their ancestors who simply needed a method to keep black slaves in line.

Justice Harlan’s dissent was so exaggerated that it was unsuccessful in changing any of the minds of the other Supreme Court justices. Harlan failed to make either a logical or emotional argument. But that does not change the fact that the Supreme Court should have acknowledged human nature and allowed blacks and whites to commingle and have equal accommodations.

Is the yellow wallpaper a feminist work?

In the story “The Yellow Wallpaper” written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, there is a strong sense of a feminist view. A young married woman suffers from a “disease” the her doctor husband John tries to cure her from when in fact the presence of his superiority and knowledge leads her to hide her feelings and ultimately become more sick. This short story is a perfect example of the struggle of a young woman in a complicated circumstance.

The bedroom of the house that this couple has just moved into is decorated with terrible yellow wallpaper and this is one of the driving forces behind her “hysterical actions.” She sees a woman, behind the hideous patterns and it turns out that she is the woman trying to break free of the patterns. Her husband denies her request to change the wallpaper and that is a perfect example of her repressed feelings, the feelings that if expressed, might cure her. Deep down she writes on her paper and tells her true feelings about how she is to trust and obey her all knowing husband. She knows he loves her and earnestly believes he is trying to help, but the only way he thinks she can get better is if she does the things he thinks will help her and that is just the thing that keeps her sick.

There are many examples of male dominance in this story and there also is the underlying tone of that being the “bad” thing. Her husband John says things like “What is it little girl, don’t go walking around like that, you’ll get cold” and “Bless her little heart” (yes that is in the third person). He treats her as if she were a child who could not think for herself. On another note, writing is one of the things that help her a great deal and John hates her to write because he says it exhausts her. Again, just because he “knows” what is good for her he shuns her needs, which are the very things that could make her well again.

The woman in the story is clearly made out to be the inferior character; however this is the reason for her struggle with the yellow wallpaper in her bedroom. Her wellness depends on ripping that disgusting wallpaper down and John believes one should not give into “such fancies as that.” She finally loses it and locks herself into the room to free the woman trapped in the paper. The author does a wonderful job of depicting a woman’s struggle and victory on her own when she pretends like she is obeying what her husband asks of her.

This story was written in a time where the feminist movement was very prevalent. The way that Gilman relates the woman’s sickness to her husband’s dominance is a perfect example of a feminist thought. In answer to the question yes, the Yellow Wallpaper is an extremely feminist work, in a beautiful and frustrating way. As I stated, it is an example of struggle that was a victory in a way because she tore down the wallpaper but a failure because she was still sick. Ultimately, leaving one to think about the bittersweet, trials and tribulations of women in that time period.

Hamlet by William Shakespeare

Task Characterization of Claudius.

Claudius, a character who reflects the story of Cane and Able.

This man has a troubled conscience. When he gazes at Gertrude, he genuinely feel love. However, when he looks away from her, he remembers how she became a widow and how he never told her the hideous crime he committed. When he speaks with her, Claudius will sound soft and compassionate, as if he were apologizing to her without saying the words. His temper will never flare up with Gertrude; instead, whenever he feels angry, he will look at Gertrude for a comforting face. I recommend that he should tenderly touch Gertrude often to show that he truly does care about her.Although Claudius would sell his soul to the devil to make Gertrude happy, he does not care at all for Ophelia. He uses her simply as a tool for ridding himself of Hamlet. He will talk to Ophelia in a stern voice with forced tolerance rather than compassion. Claudius temper will not flare up against Ophelia because he needs her assistance; however, he will lose his patience once in a while. He will yield smiles of pretense to her, and talk to her as if she had the understanding of a child. Later on in the scene, his pat on her shoulder will be a heartless gesture; he will feel as if he is praising a dog after doing a trick. Claudius has no sympathy for Ophelia, nor Polonius her father. However, unlike his attitude towards Ophelia, Claudius has respect and admiration for his advisor. Claudius will take Polonius wisely without argument, though the king should roll his eyes once in a while at Polonius long-winded remarks. Claudius will listen attentively to every word that Polonius says, which is why Claudius will be noticeably shocked when Polonius whispers We do sugar o’erthe Devil himself. However, Claudius respects every word that comes out of Polonius mouth perhaps a little too much. Claudius has become jealous of Polonius wisdom and gives the occasional false I know that nod while Polonius is trying to make a point. One thing to note is that Claudius will not make eye contact with Polonius; in a sense, Claudius does not want his eyes to reveal anything to the eavesdropping Polonius. Claudius is definitely a man of secrets and does not trust in Polonius promises.Claudius wields much respect for Polonius; however, he has none for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. He views the two as slaves and will address them with insensitivity. He does not care about their feelings. He does not care what happens to them after Hamlet is dead. Claudius simply plans to pay them for their work, and never see them again. He wants to be seen as the employer, so he will harshly treat them as lowly employees. He will often get angry at their incompetence and will keep his chin high while facing them. He has no intention of socializing with underlings. Lastly, though Claudius never does speak with Hamlet, the two will have a huge impact on each other. Claudius will squirm with uneasiness whenever Hamlet seems to look at him through his fathers portrait. The king fears that Hamlet knows the truth about King Hamlets death and will therefore take every one of Hamlets words seriously. Claudius will even cover his mouth a few times in fear when Hamlet mentions images of death and decay. Claudius has never trusted Hamlet, and would kill him on the spot if it were guaranteed that Gertrude would never find out. However, in the world of Shakespeare, two successful murders out of two is a little uncommon…

The greenhouse effect is an increase in the atmospheric temperature caused by increasing amounts of greenhouse gases. These gases act as a heat blanket insulating the Earths surface absorbing and trapping heat radiation which normally escapes from the earth. They include carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane, nitrous oxide, CFCs, and other halocarbons. The earths atmosphere goes through two processes constantly. Global cooling is the first process. This process uses the clouds which cover 60% of the earths surface to reflect 0% of the solar radiation. It also uses a sulfate haze, which is formed by sulfur dioxide from industrial sources that enter the atmosphere and react with compounds to form a high-level aerosol. These cool the atmosphere by blocking us from direct contact with the sun. The reflection of the sunlight is referred to as planetary albedo and contributes to the overall cooling. The second is the warming process. This is when light energy comes through the atmosphere and is absorbed by Earth and transformed to heat energy at the planets surface. The infrared heat energy then radiates upward into space. There the greenhouse gases found naturally in the troposphere absorb some of the infrared radiation. The gases insulate the Earth, but do eventually allow the heat to escape. Without these greenhouse gases the earth would be would C colder. Global temperature is a balance of the effects of the factors leading to global cooling, and warming. Unfortunately, increased emissions of greenhouse gases increase the warming process. For example, every kilogram of fossil fuels burned equals kilograms of carbon dioxide ( the mass triples because each carbon atom in fuel bond to two oxygen atoms, in the course of burning, and forms C0. ) 6 billion tons of fossil fuel carbon are burned each year adding 18 billion tons of C0 to the atmosphere. This has increase the carbon dioxide concentrations by 5% and has cause temperatures to increase more than 0.7 C over the last hundred years. We hope that the forests will act as a sink for carbon dioxide but instead they are a net source. This is because the forests are being cut and burned adding 1 to billion tons annually to the 6 billion tons of carbon already from industrial processes. Fortunately, the top 00 meters of oceans absorb most of the carbon dioxide emitted by burning fossil fuels. Other factors are known to increase the greenhouse effect. These factor are water vapor, methane, nitrous oxide, CFCs and other halocarbons. Water vapor is also a major factor in what has been called the supergreenhouse effect in the tropical Pacific ocean. Water vapor traps energy that has been radiated back to the atmosphere. The high concentration of HO vapor contributes significantly to the heating of the ocean surface and lower atmosphere in the tropical Pacific. Methane (CH4) is a product of microbial fermentative reactions and is also emitted from coal mines, gas pipelines, and oil wells. Methane is gradually destroyed, but it is added to the atmosphere faster than it can be broken down. Nitrous oxide (NO) can be found in biomass burning, chemical fertilizers, and fossil fuel burning. Nitrous oxide is more dangerous than some of the others because of its long residence time of 170 years. CFCs and other halocarbons are found in refrigerants, solvents, and fire retardants. Halocarbons have a greater capacity, 10 000 times, for absorbing infrared radiation, which is about 60% more, than CO. Although there is increase in the application of some of these gases, they will decrease in importance in the future leaving carbon dioxide as the primary dilemma. In 181, James Hansen of NASA invented a model with an ability to track known temperature changes and link them to past and future carbon dioxide levels as well as global temperature changes. The model suggested the combination of CO and volcanic emissions was responsible for most of the observed changes in temperature during the 180s. A trend of warming of more than 0.7 C coincides with an increase of 5% in carbon dioxide. Two major impacts of greenhouse effect are regional climatic changes and a rise in sea levels. A climactic change will lead to variations in temperature. Scientists expect more precipitation which may prove to be disastrous for North America by flooding rivers and lakes. A rise in the sea levels is anticipated because of an increase in thermal expansion and the melting of ice caps and ice fields. Like extensive rainfalls, a rise in the ocean will flood lakes and rivers covering land and may someday bury continents. In order to control the effects of global warming we must first admit that its occurring, then take steps to end it. We must stop burning the trees and not replacing them. Most importantly, we must stop polluting the air.

Heroes are kind, generous, and they do great things such as saving people’s lives and saving the world from destruction. Whether it is a Homeric hero, super-hero or the common man as a hero, they are admired and held in high esteem. Homeric heroes such as Odysseus were bigger than life. Although Odysseus had some help from the gods, he was able to accomplish many unbelievable tasks by using his intelligence. Odysseus did not posses any super powers like Superman. Superman was able to save the world from evil because he had many super powers. He had great strength and x-ray vision that helped him to conquer his enemies. Superman was someone who everyone could count on to always do the right thing. Since September 11th, the common man as a hero has become more important. People are beginning to understand that a regular person who doesn’t have help from the gods like Odysseus or who doesn’t posses super powers like Superman, can be a hero too. Brave acts where someone puts his life on the line to save another human being has become important in our society today. Police officers, fire fighters and just regular people who go out of their way to help someone are now held in high esteem. Everyone has the power to do the right thing and be a hero.

Odysseus, the protagonist in the epic poem, The Odyssey, is an example of a Homeric hero. Odysseus is an ordinary man who has strength, courage and great intelligence. When he needs help, he prays to Zeus or to the other gods. Odysseus does not possess any super powers, although he does receive a little help from the gods at times. He doesn’t have x-ray vision, and he can’t predict the future. Odysseus possesses human qualities. Odysseus uses his intelligence to survive the various tests that are sent his way. For example, he knows that if he were able to blind the Cyclops, that he and his men would have a good chance to escape their predicament. Odysseus takes charge of the situations he gets into, and he is able to figure out ways to escape so that he can return home. The Cyclops is not a villain. He is just a one-eyed monster who gets in Odysseus’ way on his journey home. It is up to Odysseus to use his skills to escape from the Cyclops. Odysseus’ antagonist is the Cyclops’ father, Poseidon. Poseidon is angry with Odysseus because Odysseus made his son, the Cyclops, blind. Poseidon makes Odysseus suffer by putting obstacles in front of Odysseus on his journey home. Odysseus’ motive in all that he does is his desire to survive and to return home. He is not trying to save the world from evil; he simply wants to get back home. Odysseus’ weaknesses are human too. He is a proud man who enjoys his power and this can get him into trouble. Odysseus is also stubborn and sometimes he just can’t help himself. An example of this is when he escapes from the Cyclops. Odysseus can’t resist taunting the Cyclops. The Cyclops becomes very angry and throws huge rocks at Odysseus and his men and almost brings them back. The men ask Odysseus to stop but Odysseus’ stubborn streak shows through. His trip home is often delayed because of his actions. Odysseus is a very sympathetic character because he has many human qualities that the reader can understand.

Superman is an example of a super-hero. He is “faster than a speeding bullet”, “more powerful than a locomotive”, and he is able “to leap tall buildings”. He also has x-ray vision that allows him to see through objects. Superman has super powers that help him to fight evil. Lex Luther is Superman’s villain. Lex Luther always has a plot to rule or destroy the world. It is Superman’s job to stop Lex Luther with his evil plots and Superman always triumphs over evil. Nothing on earth can defeat him except for the green Kryptonite that comes from his planet. Kryptonite is the only substance that can weaken Superman’s super strength. Superman always manages to survive with a little help from Lois Lane and Jimmy Olson. Although Superman has super abilities, he also possesses human qualities. He is intelligent and courageous, and he is capable of falling in love. He wants to save the world from evil but he also cares about his friends and people in general. Superman doesn’t want anything bad to happen to them either. If Clark Kent sees that a child is going to get hit by a car, he quickly changes into Superman and rescues the child. Superman’s motive in wanting to conquer evil is so that good can triumph over evil. Superman is not trying to save the world to become famous. He is very humble and he is happy to be just Clark Kent, a regular man.

In the movie “Unbreakable”, David does not realize that he is a super-hero. It is because of Elijah that David discovers his special abilities. David is a common man with many human qualities. He feels sad, he is unhappy with his job and he is having marriage problems. David is not different from many other people who also have problems. When Elijah finds David and tells him that he has special powers, David doesn’t believe him at first. When David begins to think about events in his life, he realizes that he does have special abilities. David also discovers that like most human beings he has a weakness, which is water. Elijah says that he and David are “at the opposite ends of the curve”. Elijah doesn’t know what his purpose on earth is and he doesn’t know who he truly is until he finds someone who is the total opposite of him. David is everything Elijah is not. David is healthy and strong. He is a good human being. Elijah is not healthy and he is not strong. His illness causes his bones to break easily and it causes him great pain. He is obsessed with his sickness and with what his purpose is on earth. Elijah doesn’t realize that there are many other people on earth who have incurable diseases too and that they have learned to deal with their problems. It is not until he finds David that he finally realizes who he is…a villain. Elijah does evil things like planning the plane crash and the train accident so that he can find the person who can survive these incidents because that person will be the total opposite of who he is . . .a survivor and a person who has the power to be a hero. Joseph, David’s son tells his father, “You don’t let bad things happen to good people. That’s the hero’s code isn’t it Dad?” helps his father realize who he is and what he needs to do. David realizes he should help people because he has the ability to stop bad things from happening to people. David is humble and is happy knowing that he has helped people survive evil deeds. The role of a super-hero and the role of a villain are different but in some ways they fit together. Because villains and evil exist in the word there are also heroes like David who help good triumph over evil.

The events of September 11th changed what some people think of as a hero. Before that day, most heroes to kids were rock stars, basketball, baseball, or football players. Many of these kids worshiped these people because they were rich and famous, and they never thought about who a hero really was. All this changed that day. For the first time in many people’s lives, they felt fear. People watched television and saw what the terrorists did to the World Trade Towers and to the Pentagon. People knew that thousands of lives were lost but they also saw very brave men and women try to look for any survivors. They saw common men and women, fire fighters and police officers, risk their lives to rescue any possible survivors. Many of those rescuers also lost their lives on September 11th. Those events made many people realize how amazing the fire fighters and police officers are. People discovered what real courage meant because of their brave actions. Before, people just thought of firemen or police officers as people just doing their jobs. They never received any real recognition. For some people, it took the awful events of September 11th for them to realize that these men and women risk their lives every day and that they are true heroes. Now, people see these common men and women for who they really are fathers, mothers, daughters, sons and most of all, heroes.

Homeric heroes were bigger than life and could accomplish unbelievable tasks with help from the gods. Super-heroes evolved because people needed someone to look up to and who could save the world from the evil that existed. Today’s common hero is a more realistic view of what a hero really is. A hero is a regular human being who tries to help people, the best way he or she can. We all have the power to be that person who helps others, and we all have the potential to be heroes.

As you turn on the TV, images of superficial models, with bony body, heavy makeup and little clothes on appear overwhelmingly onto commercials. As well as you are appealed by those ¡°beauties¡± emerged everywhere, have you even realized that it actually has become a big part of the negative influences on teenagers today, especially in this materialistic society.

Teenage girls are more likely to be trapped by those websites and magazines that have images of tall women with long, beautiful blonde hair and a gorgeous body, showing well how to keep your body shaped. As a result, they trend to spend more time on constantly fixing the hair and checking out if the make-up has been faded rather than studying. They dream about one day they would eventually become one of them, one of them who have unbelievable physical appearances but is incredibly lack in knowledge. To achieve this final goal, they try dozen of methods and seem to ignore all those harmful effects that will come up afterwards. They smoke by the reason that smoking keeps them away from the thirst of food, but with the ignorance of the damage cigarettes would bring to their lung. They are in a hunger of being skinny, after staring at their slender bodies and having enough strength to stop eating for whatever days, in the purpose to be looking like a chicken bone. But the fact is they will never ever feel satisfied since there are always some new models that are better madeup, with size 0ed body.

I used to be attracted too. But as the age increasing, I more and more realized that women without real characters are just idols and dolls. They don¡¯t show off their brain as well as showing their body. They are not so outstanding in knowledge as in knowing the makeup produced by which company or new season arrived perfume. They just stand with a prominent slouch and look as they are starving, dying a death.

Clifford Geertz

In Clifford Geertz, “Deep Play Notes on the Balinese Cockfight,” cockfighting has a theme of masculinity, death, pride, probable chance, and addiction. Outrage of any kind is not accepted or permitted for losers both in the ring and not. Losing and winning becomes a thing of the past too quickly, almost as if the cockfight never existed.

There are many parts of Geertz’s essay that I could not understand, but one passage stood out to be strong; however, I lacked full understanding so I will improvise.

“ It puts a construction on them meaningful-visible, tangible, graspable- “real,” in an ideational sense. An image, fiction, a model, a metaphor, the cockfight is a means of expression; its function is neither to assuage social passions nor heighten them (through, in its play-with-fire way, it does a bit of both), but, in a medium of feathers, blood, crowds, and money, to display them.” Through my best interpretation, this quote is strong and delivers the meaning of cockfighting in which it displays a process of construction, an art, and sustains quality, which is then turned into disquiet performance which is truly appreciated by only those who have forgotten the winners, the losers, and the match by the next fight. Nevertheless, those who resist appreciating it are compared to those in our culture to those who bet on horses, fill slot machines with mindless money, and gamble on poker tables.

To call something an art means that those who design it make it rare with character. I believe Geertz’s meaning in this passage is that there is astonishing quality to the sport of cockfighting; rare qualities that is. Thus, metaphorical relationships to the art are the insightful meaning of what draws the Balinese to this draw of two cocks. Nonetheless, there is a man to each of these cocks that’s displays disquietedness to others in their villages and only when in the center of the ring and everyone’s eyes fastened to two men’s rivalry of cocks, can the fight truly dignify a prideful cock and prove to villagers that he is worthy of his cock.

Cockfighting brings a euphoric feeling of a champion winning. The Balinese attract themselves to such pleasure and are drawn to these rivalries of cocks because of the quality in its art and expression and meaning. It is an art like no other that displays those who are prisoners to its money and those who are drawn to its construction and beauty. Most Balinese will take from cockfighting gratification or pride; those who celebrate their winnings are not praised just as in our culture we are shameful of those who are gamblers of horses, slot machines, and poker tables.

In the novel Heart of Darkness, the issue of the “nature of man” and what it means to be human or humane is echoed through Marlow’s journey down the dark jungle of the Congo. To be human means to have a mind, to be living, and function as a primate. To be humane on the other hand, means to be tender, compassionate, affectionate, kindhearted, and empathetic. It is often assumed that to be human is to be humane, but as Marlow learns, one has nothing to do with the other. In the novel, there are numerous incidents which depicts the white man’s ruthless behavior toward the natives. This is evident as the white man enslaves, tortures and murders the natives as if they are objects and not humans like themselves.

Throughout the novel, the white man encourages slavery of the natives and uses force to get what he desires. For example, the company’s chief accountant acknowledges that the reason he dresses in such a pleasant way is because he beats the natives whom he enslaves. “I’ve been teaching one of the native women about the station. It was difficult. She had a distaste for the work.” (Conrad 8) He assumes that the only means of getting the native to make his clothes crisp and fresh is by harshly beating her until she got the task done perfectly. Another incident where one sees an atrocious sight of men being treated as savages is when Marlow sees the six man chain gang. They were six black men chained together obviously being treated as inferiors, almost as slaves. Upon seeing this atrocious sight of men being treated as savages, Marlow compares the white man leading these chained up men, to devils. “ They were strong, lusty, red-eyed devils, that swayed and drove men-men I tell you.” (81) Marlow explains that he had never seen men who drove other men like cattle. Men who were no different than themselves, except in the color of their skin. Kurtz is also another good example of the exploitation of the natives. Upon Marlow’s arriving at the inner station, he learns from the Russian Trader that one cannot talk to Kurtz; rather they must listen to him. “You don’t talk with that man-you only listen to him.” (17) This indicates that Kurtz has become so cruel and rapacious in his behavior to the extent that he only gives orders and refuses to take any one’s opinion in the process.

There are countless cruelties and tortures that the natives have to endure as they are being used as scapegoats for the white men. “A nigger was being beaten near by. They said he had caused the fire in some way… I saw him, later, for several days, looking very sick and trying to recover himself… the wilderness without a sound took him into its bosom again.” (0) Marlow goes on to explain that the native was accused of causing the fire, although the general manager knowing he cannot be accountable for the fire; beats the native harshly. Another encounter of cruelty done towards the natives happens when Marlow sees the six chained up men advancing up the hill. “ They walked erect, and slow, balancing small baskets full of earth on their heads, and the clink kept time with their footsteps…every rib, the joints of their limbs were like knots in a robe; each had an iron collar on his neck, and all were connected together with a chain whose bights swung between them, rhythmically clinking.” (80) This displays the torture the black man has to endure. As Marlow then descends down the hill, he spies a big shade tree in the distance and decides to investigate. Marlow goes under the tree and finds many natives moaning and waiting to die. Marlow is stunned at what he sees as “ Black shapes crouched, lay, sat between the trees leaning against the trunks, clinging to the earth, half coming out, half effaced within the dim light within the dim light with all attitudes of pain, abandonment, and despair.” (8)

Many of the natives were murdered by the inhumanity and cruelty of the white man. Marlow brings up a specific inhuman whom is Kurtz. Kurtz was a murderer as he had dried heads of natives he had killed for not following orders or retaliating against him. “They would have been more impressive, these heads on the stakes, if their faces had not been turned to the house… black, dried, sunken, with closed eyelids a head…” (1-1) Kurtz shows his oppression towards the natives by torturing and killing them, and keeping their heads as souvenirs. Kurtz is disturbed and clearly shows his supposed dominance over these feeble natives. Another example of natives abandoned and murdered is when Marlow stumbles upon a body of a native with a bullet hole through the forehead on his way o the inner station. “ …a body of a middle-aged Negro with bullet-hole in the forehead, upon which I stumbled three miles farther on…” (86) There are many incidents in the novel where the natives are abandoned and left to die alone with no kind of comfort. One example is when Marlow is in the groove of death and witnesses a death of a native. “ One of those creatures rose to his hands and knees, and went on all-fours towards the river to drink. He lapped out of his hand, then sat up in the sunlight, crossing his shins in front of him, and after a time let his wooly head fall on his breastbone.” (8) These instances obviously reveal the white men’s ignorance and inhumane treatment.

In conclusion, Marlow is faced with the inhumanity of the white man and his ill treatment towards the natives. This is obvious as the white man acts in a superior manner, which leaves the natives tortured and abandoned to death. In the end Marlow realized that not only did human nature not include the ability to be humane, but also that the natives being discriminated against were kindred with him and all of man. The river gave Marlow the chance to experience the hatred and the truth of the world, by showing him the inhumane white man. Marlow finally found the heart of darkness, but was able to leave the Congo with a renewed light about him and everything he believed true.

I think if you were to ask a elderly person their opinion on divorce they would probably say something like, “ In my day it was unheard of”. In this essay Noel Perrin tells about his divorce, and his theory on what caused it to happen. What Perrin basically says is that some couple don’t last for the simple fact they spend to much time together. The fact that they are seeing too much of that other person is making it that they are getting to comfortable around each other. That causes them to stop doing the things that a normal husband and wife would do for each other. In his essay he gives a situation on how a husband and wife gets divorced. Then he gives an example on their post divorce relationship. He does this to show the reader the difference in how they act when they don’t see each other twenty-four hours a day.

Question 1 Describe the conditions that soldiers experienced on the Western Front in the years 115 to 117.

During the first wirld war both sides dug trenches. These trenches ended up stretching from the Belgian coast to the Swiss border, around 700 kilometres. Fighting in the trenches lasted 4 years. Soldiers on both sides were forced to daily face the dangers and conditions of life fighting in the trenches on the western front in the First World War.

The trenches were laid out in certain ways for tactical reasons to defend the occupied land. A trench system consisted of at least three lines of trenches. There was the front line trench, which was where the main fighting took place. This trench was backed up by the support trench, which was mainly used to rest troops but which also was called upon in a crisis. Behind the support trench was the reserve trench, which if the Front Line trench looked like it was being overwhelmed, then troops in the reserve trench could be used to support them. Communication trenches connected all these trenches to each other and enabled the movement of men and supplies between them. Each trench was protected by rows of barbed wire, which could be up to 0 metres deep. The land in between the opposing side’s trenches was called No Man’s Land, which neither side controlled and was usually around 00 yards.

As the Germans were the first to decide where to dig in they chose the best place to build their trenches, which was on higher ground. This not only gave them a tactical advantage but it forced the allied forces to dig their trenches on lower ground. This land was just a few feet above sea level so obviously when they started to dig they would reach water. Rain added to the problem and made the trenches waterlogged and full of mud. This meant along the whole line of the allied forces life involved a never-ending struggle against water and mud. No Man’s Land due to this rain also became very muddy making it even harder for troops to cross it and attack the enemy.

The fighting in the trenches consisted of regular intervals of machine guns firing at the approaching enemy troops and at their trenches. Before a big offensive (attack) both sides used their artillery to shell the enemy trenches in an effort to kill enemy troops and destroy their trenches and barbed wire defences. Once this had taken place soldiers prepared to go ‘over the top’ across No Man’s Land and attack the enemy’s trench. However first, paths had to be cut through the side’s own barbed wire which was defending their trench so they could get through to attack the enemy’s trench.

Both sides used mines in the war. These were explosives packed at the end of a long underground tunnel. The mines were placed directly underneath the enemy’s trench and then the tunnel was sealed. This sent the force of the blast upwards which destroyed the enemy’s trench above it and killed many soldiers. At the same time the troops attacked while the enemy was in confusion. Mines were just one of the many dangers that men faced in the trenches. Poisonous gas was first used by the Germans in 115. Gas like chlorine would cause choking and victims would die by suffocation. However in 116 gas masks were introduced to protect men from these gases but gas masks could not stop one gas called mustard gas. It wasn’t very deadly as only % of its victims died but it attacked the skin surface and caused intense burning, swelling of the eyes, blindness and choking. There was also constant danger from heavy shelling, which was what caused the most casualties in the war along with machine guns and snipers.

There was also another kind of danger, a danger of diseases. Some diseases were even created by living in the trenches. Trench foot was caused by standing in the waterlogged trenches for hours and not changing socks or boots. The feet would then swell inside the boot cut of circulation and rot. Toes were easily lost this way and sometimes whole feet had to be amputated. There was also trench fever caused by lice, which infested the trenches, living in the men’s clothes and feeding off their blood. It was very hard to get rid of all the lice even if they were destroyed their eggs still lived ready to hatch. Shell shock was a mental illness caused by long exposure to shelling. Many of these diseases were caused by the complete lack of hygiene, which many men despised. There was rarely a chance to wash, as there wasn’t much clean water available and there weren’t proper, hygienic toilet facilities. So many men were being killed that there wasn’t enough men and time to bury them, all which meant that many rats were attracted to the rotting corpses and infested the trenches. They fed of the decomposing bodies and grew quite big. All the corpses as well as unemptied latrines or toilets made the smell in the trenches at times unbearable for the soldiers.

If a soldier was wounded in battle it was very hard to find him amongst the corpses and mud. It was very distressing for the men to here their friends crying out for help but unable to find them. Even if a wounded solider was found there weren’t very good medical facilities by the trenches and it was sometimes a long journey to the nearest hospital. Sometimes people’s injuries were so bad they were sent home. Some soldiers got things like trench foot on purpose or shot themselves in the foot so that they could get sent home. This was called ‘copping a blighty’ and shows how bad conditions on the front must have been if these men were wiling to sacrifice a body part just to leave. If their superiors discovered they had purposely injured themselves they could be court marshalled. Some men also deserted the army and faced a prison sentence for doing this.

My knees trembled and my perspiring hands did their best to grip the bat. I was already down two strikes and I watched with sore eyes as the third one sat me back on the bench. Striking out became my regular batting status, and the dirt path back to the dugout was all too familiar. Crushed hopes and inevitable fears defined my entire Kiski Valley Pirate softball career.

Being only ten on the twelve and under team, I wasn’t a regular starter. I was substituted in every once in a great while. When I did get the chance to prove myself, I would fail miserably. Whether it was making an error at second base or striking out I was a letdown to myself and to my team. I never missed a practice or a game in the four years that I continued to play. I was dedicated but I was too childish to face the challenges that seemed impossible to overcome. I quit the Pirates and asked myself one question. What did those four years teach me? Those four years taught me to hate everything. I despised my opponents, I feared my coaches, and worst of all I humiliated my dad.

The Kiski Valley Pirates had a well known reputation. Being very loud and obnoxious made every team despise us. Many of the games became personal leaving us players mocking and ridiculing our opponents. The umpires even became irate with our appalling fans and loud-mouthed coaches. Although our team was extremely talented we lacked respect and good sportsmanship. Our team didn’t play for love of the game. The win that was taken home was all that mattered. Losses rarely happened, but when they did the coaches had an earful to say.

Skill is critiqued by what is taught and learned by example. I will admit that our coaches were the best instructors’ skill wise in the vicinity. How to play the game of softball was learned in detail, but respect for the other team was almost frowned upon. This form of discrimination towards others makes it difficult to even respect yourself. Softball is supposed to be an enjoyment for recreational purposes. With coaches and players breathing down your back it was an uncomfortable and plain unpleasant experience. I would have never learned how to truly play this sport with my heart if I had coaches like that the remainder of my softball career.

My dad was the one who taught me everything. He molded me into a softball machine. He was my coach, my friend, and my consolidator. Always there for me, being at every game, and watching every tear that streamed down my depressed face. He taught me how to be respectful and accept my failures as an adult not an annoying child. He knew what I was capable of, but it wasn’t enough for him to believe in me. I had to believe in myself.

I wouldn’t find out who I really was until I played JV softball for Mr. White the following year. I do not think we were victorious in one game that season, but this much I have learned. That it is not about who hackled the other team more or brought more controversy to the field. I learned that it is not about who put forth the clutch hit or who scored the winning run. The real point is, it does not matter who wins and who loses. It is about doing what you love and loving every minute of it. Never forget why you came to practice or why you even choose to play this sport. You do it because, regardless of the score you have already won. Although the Kiski Valley Pirates might have left me with distasteful memories they helped me to learn a very valuable lesson. Softball is a different game for me now, one of satisfaction and content.

Response to “Tell Tale Heart”By Edgar Allan Poe

“True! Nervous very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses not destroyed not dulled them. Above all was the sense of hearing acute…Hearken! And observe how healthily how calmly I can tell you the whole story.” These were the words of a madman talking about his sly and cunning murder of an innocent old man in “The Tell Tale Heart,” by Edgar Allan Poe. This story is one of Poe’s most famous written pieces; it demonstrates some of his favorite ways of writing, such as madness, grotesqueness, and terror.

In Poe’s short story, he writes about madness in many ways. The narrator in this story states that he killed an old man just because of his eye. “I think it was his eye! Yes, it was this! A pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees very gradually I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.” He’s mad! Mad, I say! Just because of a mere eye, this madman decides to take the precious life of another human being! No question about it! He IS mad, but wait, the narrator contradicts his madness by saying, “You fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing. But you should have seen me. You should have seen how wisely I proceeded with what caution with what foresight with what dissimulation I went to work!” You think he proves himself sane? He then explains that he was very careful about how he entered the old man’s room and how he opened the lantern window ever so carefully, so that only a small ray of light shined on the wicked eye. Still, one mere eye, an eye that is not able to harm anyone, physically, unless the eye was a laser eye, then we would have a whole different situation, but enough about that!

Another attribute that Poe adds to his writing is grotesqueness. For example, after the narrator killed the old man, he took his corpse and chopped it up into pieces. “The night waned, and I worked hastily, but in silence. First of all I dismembered the corpse. I cut off the head and arms and the legs.” That’s disgusting! Just thinking about dismembering a corpse makes me sick! Cutting off the head, arms and the legs is an ugly thought. The narrator said that there was nothing to wash out and there was no stain of any kind because a tub caught all the blood. Could that be possible? If he had used a hatchet like in the movie, there would be blood that splattered all over the room. He indicated that a tub had caught it all, meaning that all the blood that splattered around the room miraculously landed inside the tub. Not to mention the hatchet he used; where would he hide that?

I think that the most emphasized attribute in all of Poe’s writing is terror. In “The Tell Tale Heart,” a madman murders an old man who never wronged him, and had never given him an insult. The thought of death or someone being murdered is a frightening feeling. For example, the serial killers that had been wandering around killing people for no reason is scary. It makes you become more alert to your surroundings. It would be scary if a sniper killed someone in your area, and you witnessed it. The memory would haunt you forever. Not only the victim feels terror, in Poe’s short story, the narrator feels terror as well. Near the end of the story, when the policemen sit down and laugh at each other, the narrator starts to hear a sound; the old man’s heart beat. How pressured the narrator must have been when the sound was terrorizing him, we don’t know. He explains, “I gasped for breath and yet the officers heard it not. I talked more quickly more vehemently; but the noise steadily increased…I foamed I raved I swore! It grew louder louder louder! And still the men chatted pleasantly, and smiled… But anything was better than this agony! Anything was more tolerable than this derision!” I hear…the sound of a person going from sane, to mad… Oh sure, he shows his madness by killing someone, but does his inner consciousness of right and wrong affect his own acts and motives? Or is he just not listening to it?

Edgar Allan Poe has really put most of his ways of writing terror, insanity, and grotesqueness, into this particular piece. You won’t, or rarely will, find a poem or story that is written by Poe without at least one of these attributes. So do you really think that the narrator is mad? Or are YOU the one that’s insane…
